re former pro baller kenny anderson: His daughters Lyric and Jazz are from his first marriage with Tami Akbar (now Tami Roman). Akbar was a cast member on The Real World: Los Angeles (the second season), and is currently on VH1's Basketball Wives. He and Akbar were married from 1994 to 2001.[14],[15] Akbar filed for divorce in Christmas 1998 citing Anderson's infidelity. She successfully challenged the 1995 $5.8 million pre-nup. As a result of the divorce Tami acquired a sizeable portion of his assets (reported to be half) in addition to $8500 monthly child support. Tami had a license plate custom-made to mark her victory with the phrase "HISCASH".

I'm trying to remember when I stopped watching entirely.

Probably around 2000 when I mpved here and had my first real apt/job and was so poor that my cable got shut off and the only channel I got for year was PAX the Christian network. I don't think I ever got back on board after that. I have, however, seen every episode of both Highway to Heaven and 7th Heaven.

Beth is a 24-year-old graduate of Ohio University,[10][9] where she studied film, television and radio production. She is an avid fan of the entertainment industry, and is in Los Angeles to pursue her career, to meet new people, and challenge herself. Her friends describe her as a "drama queen" whose life is like a soap opera. She has worked as a production assistant, worked in a casting office, but is not interested in acting. During the season, she clashes with David, and later, with Glen.[11]

some dude, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

4.0 out of 5 stars Tired of manufactured music get Perch totally unique, March 3, 2002
By
Neal D. - See all my reviews
This review is from: Planet Perch (Audio CD)
I had the privilege of interviewing Glen the lead singer in Philly for my show Journalist Viewpoint. I ultimately ended up becoming good friends with him. The album is totally unique and creative. Glen's voice is a cross between Jim Morrison and Anthony Kiedis of Chili Peppers.
The lyrics all originally written. The guitar riffs are kickin. In a time of boy bands and manufacture music. This album steps above and rocks, very original. Whats up Glen

goole, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

Josh is a Puerto Rican/Italian singer/songwriter/dancer from South Philadelphia, specializing in glam rock, rap, and punk-funkadelic music.[32][58] He used to be the lead singer in a band called Whiskey Livin', and is currently working on a solo project.[30] He dropped out of high school twice and was jailed due to an association with gangs he says he longer retains[47][32] He likes to dress well, and is described as a quintessential ladies' man, though he concedes that his attraction to women is his main weakness, which may make it difficult to stay faithful to his girlfriend of three years,[59] Ashley.[58] After moving into the Real World house, Josh began working part-time as a bartender in Georgetown.[30] He also forms a band while in DC named Wicked Liquid.

ha no wonder i tuned out

This was the first season in which the housemates were given a season-long assignment or task, an aspect of the series that would continue in almost all subsequent seasons (the Brooklyn season dispensed with it). This season the cast was given $50,000 startup money to begin a business of their choosing. The cast's efforts were marked by much disorganization and conflict, and while ideas such as a dessert delivery service and a fashion line were floated about, they were ultimately not able to start the business.

i hate this. why did they do this. i hate reality tv, because of this.

this is essentially what you'll get on a more recent season

Despite growing up in a small town, Dustin considers himself "a city boy at heart".[9] Characterized by what MTV describes as a "boyish charm and southern gentleman demeanor", Dustin grew up with a bi-polar, drug addicted mom and an abusive stepfather. Although he was constantly shuttled between parents, relatives and various friends' houses, he worked hard to maintain relationships with his family,[14] though his brother Quay visits in Episode 8.[15] He worries as to whether he will develop bipolar disorder, which his mother suffers from.[5] He attended Lamar University,[13] and once lived in the house featured on Frat Pad, a live webcam site in which he and other men engage in sexual activities with one another,[16][17] though he stresses that he is straight and did this purely for a living, and he hopes to put that past behind him.[9] He further explains that his mother's Pentecostal beliefs precluded him from playing sports, and that not wanting to work in oil fields or sell drugs, he chose that line of work because of limited options.[15][18] An avid fan of racing,[10] his friends see him as a highly competitive young man whose good looks help him socialize with women.[14][13] Although he initially expresses an aversion to romance with his housemates in the premiere, he later begins a romantic relationship with Heather in that same episode,[9][16] which later becomes sexual,[5] but when she and the rest of the cast learn he has concealed a past in gay porn, Heather breaks up with him, and the others feel betrayed.[15]

I didn't have real access to cable television until I was in college, and even then didn't really see TRW until 2000. So thanks for cluing me in that New Orleans was the last decent one, guys, because that was the first I saw :(

Homophobic guy who was in gay porn was a slow-burn until they figured it out. I think a couple seasons ago they had a guy who had an alcoholic mother he hadn't seen in years, and he managed to get in a bar fight and get his face broken in the first episode.

I find a certain amount of frustration that I can't find the clip from MTV's "Sex In The '90s" of Lou Barlow sitting in a dark room queening out about his lady cheating on him.

He was wearing a Joy Division t-shirt no less.

Although the castmates were informed ahead of time that they would be living with someone who was HIV-positive, they were not informed which housemate it would be.[8] On the cast's first night in the house, Campos’ housemate, AIDS educator Pedro Zamora, informed the housemates that he had AIDS by showing them his scrapbook of his career as an HIV educator. Campos felt uncomfortable and initially distanced herself from Zamora, stating that she wanted to know how his health status would affect her.

This blew my mind, because she knew about this, then managed to not learn anything about HIV/AIDS at all on her own, and expected him to fill her in on HOW IT WOULD AFFECT HER

It was very surreal. There were actors playing Puck and Judd and shit and they kind of had scene-for-scene re-enactments of key pivotal plot points from the show but it was so surreal to see actors re-enacting reality TV but also being really, really bad actors. I can't explain it. You must rent this movie solely for the Real World shit.

DC: Do you still keep in touch with Dave Eggers (author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius")?

Judd Winick: No I don’t. I was quite surprised to find myself in his book, but Dave was very fair, very complementary, and very kind. He could have been cruel, and no one would have faulted him. I did send him a letter and a copy of Pedro and Me.

homosexual II, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

Judd was on a job hunt sending comics to the SF Chronicle? and also to Eggers' Might magazine which was really big at the time.
Judd did land the chronicle gig I think. but not Might magazine. But somehow Eggers also met Puck because in the book, he describes him as "ollie ollie 720 frontside grind" or something.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

the fake Puck is so awful

eggers made it to the final round for that season and theres a long section in the book where he imagines an interview w/ an mtv producer

Anyhoo:

GOD I REMEMBER THAT SEX IN THE 90s!

Other remember when shit: peak-era Dan Cortese as a Burger King spokesman, during that weird time in 1993 when BK served popcorn and tried to be a respectable restaurant, where the surly teenaged employees would actually deliver the food to your table.

Also: with Red Johnny & the Round Guy, the Round Guy quit show-biz and Red Johnny went back to his real name and started doing voice over work. Later, he hooked up with Matt Groening and is now best known for voicing a certain alcoholic robot.

I worshipped Liquid TV, to the point of taping entire seasons of it. This was during the years when I was a massive tapehead and my folks would buy me like 10-packs of blank VHS for christmas and it was awesome. It would take me a few more years before I got into actual decent music(I was a big Aerosmith fan at the time), but...

They gave Alex Winter his own sketch comedy show in the summer of '91, around the same time Bogus Journey came out. Eddie the Flying Gimp and Willard Shrek the convenience store guy are still referenced by my brother & I to this day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvJ9qqyKYEE

What was the name of the one sorta-hott alt-chick on RW: Montana or something? I can't even remember which mid-90s season she was on, except that she showed up in the Road Rules competition a few times.

Also: with Red Johnny & the Round Guy, the Round Guy quit show-biz and Red Johnny went back to his real name and started doing voice over work. Later, he hooked up with Matt Groening and is now best known for voicing a certain alcoholic robot.

From a recent John Dimaggio interview at The AV Club:

AVC: Whether it’s to your amusement or your horror, there are actually some clips of you guys on YouTube.
JD: Oh, yeah, uh... [Gives a low, sad whistle.] Nah, we were good. We did well in New York, and we were together for six years. My old partner—I don’t need to bring him up. He’s a… That guy’s a real… Uh, yeah. [Laughs.]
AVC: His name doesn’t seem to be anywhere online. There are lots of references to you having been Red Johnny, but…
JD: Aw, yeah. Good. I’m not even going to tell you what it is, because I don’t want him to get any taste of what it’s like to still be in show business. Because he is out of show business. He went back to Connecticut to work at his college job. In fact, the last time I saw my comedy partner—by the way, comedy teams never work out. They never work out. [Laughs.] Let me give you an example, because everybody that I know hates the guy. Like, all the other comics are just, like, “Oooooooh….” I left for Los Angeles, and he tried to do the jokes by himself, but it was just bad. He had some problems, and he was just way off. Dave Attell basically said, “Red Johnny is on Chicago Hope, and The Round Guy’s just hoping to get to Chicago.” That was a Dave Attell joke. A Dave Attell jam.
I came up with all those guys, like Attell, [Dave] Chappelle, Jay Mohr, Jim Breuer, Sarah Silverman. I mean, I remember when Sarah Silverman couldn’t get a laugh. I remember all kinds of people. Everybody. Marc Maron. Who else? I remember seeing Ray Romano. We were all doing our stuff, and [Ray Romano voice] Ray would, uh, do that key-jingling bit that he always did, where he, uh, jingled the keys. So, yeah, I came up in that. It was funny because my comedy partner—and this is what we’re getting back to—we went to theater school at Rutgers together, and he was on academic or artistic probation or some shit like that, so he was out in L.A. for, like, six months, and he got the idea that we should put together a comedy act. So we did. And it lasted for about six years, and then I was, like, “I can’t do this anymore, I’m gonna fucking strangle you.” So, I ended the act, I booked a job, and, uh, it was obvious who was carrying the act after I broke it up. [Laughs.]
But the last time I actually saw him—and this is the best part—was on a CNN clip about workers that have naptime at work. Like, nap-break rooms. That was the last time I saw him. My mother told me he was on CNN, and I looked it up, and I saw him on CNN talking about taking naps at work and how much he needed one. And it was just, like, “Wow, that fucking guy is an asshole.” [Laughs.] That was the last time I saw him, and I’m glad. He’s back doing the job that he was doing in college. Except I think he’s moved up the ladder. Some.

They've converted that firehouse they lived in into a rec center IIRC; I did a recording session in Church of the Advent, which is a block down the street, a few years ago and was going "why does this all look so familiar WAIT A SECOND THAT'S THE RW HOUSE" on my way there. It was a canny location; you can barely see the house at all from the main street but it's massively present and perfect for those sweeping exterior shots once you get on the side street.

Cast member successes

Appearing on the program has often served as a springboard to further success, especially in the entertainment industry.[13]

Eric Nies of the New York cast went on to become a successful model, actor, and television host, and was inducted into the Television and Broadcasters' Hall of Fame for his pioneering work in reality television. His housemate, Kevin Powell, became a successful author, poet, journalist, and 2006 candidate for United States House of Representatives for New York's 10th district. Their housemate Heather B. enjoyed a career as a hip-hop music artist.

Los Angeles cast member Beth Stolarczyk has produced men's and women's calendars and television programs featuring reality TV personalities, including herself, Las Vegas' Trishelle Cannatella, Chicago's Tonya Cooley, and Back to New Yorks Coral Smith. Stolarczyk and Cannatella have also appeared in Playboy magazine, as have Las Vegas' Arissa Hill and Miami's Flora Alekseyeun. Cooley appeared on playboy.com.

London cast member Jacinda Barrett has become a film actress, appearing in films such as Ladder 49, The Namesake, The Human Stain, and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

2004 San Diego castmate Jamie Chung has appeared in various television and film roles, including Dragonball Evolution and Sorority Row.

Lindsay Brien of the Seattle cast became a radio and CNN personality.

Hawaii cast member Tecumseh "Teck" Holmes III appeared in National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

Chicago cast member Kyle Brandt’s acting career includes starring in the soap opera Days of our Lives. His castmate Tonya Cooley also appeared on an MTV special of True Life: I'm a Reality TV Star.

Las Vegas castmembers Trishelle Cannatella and Steven Hill appeared in the horror film Scorned. Cannatella herself has also appeared on other reality shows, such as The Surreal Life, Battle of the Network Reality Stars, and Kill Reality, the latter of which also featured Hill and Cooley. Hill, along with housemate Alton Williams, hosts a radio show.

Sean Duffy of the Boston cast served several terms as the Attorney General of Ashland County in Wisconsin, and in November 2010 was elected to the United States House of Representatives, winning the seat as a Republican in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District.[14] Mike Mizanin has also found fame as a WWE wrestler wrestling under the name "The Miz," a character he first debuted during his season on The Real World and has since won the WWE Tag Team Championship, the WWE United States Championship, and the WWE Championship.

Dozens of former cast members from The Real World and its sister production Road Rules have appeared on the spin-off series The Challenge, which pays $100,000 or more to its winners. Various cast members have also earned livings as public speakers, as Bunim-Murray Productions has funded their training in motivational speaking by the Points of Light Foundation since 2002, allowing them to earn between $1,500 and $2,000 for an appearance on the college lecture circuit.[15]
