Those are ludicrous (though perversely interesting) and play so strongly on absurdly nationalistic ideas of Russo-Slavic volk mythology that I half expected to see at least one or two of them depicting giant Russian warriors kicking the shit out of Jews. I'm grateful that none of them do, but who knows what's not being shown? Similar art (though with more of a "Balkan" slant) was widely influential on Serbian criminals like Karadzic, Milosevic and Mladic, and are still used as cover art on various books and musical releases of a genocidal / nationalist bent, not only in Serbia, but throughout much of Orthodox Slav world (not so much in non-Slavic but Orthodox cultures like Romania and Greece), and increasingly even in largely Catholic Slavic areas like Poland and western Ukraine. Substitute some of the pagan imagery for more demonstrable Christian imagery and swap a few symbolic images for ones with local relevance and voilà. Sad.

tautology surely?

these are the funniest cuz of the mammoths

They remind me of the kind of picture-book illustrative stuff that I used to lose myself in as a kid - spending ages reading a book over and over, pretending I was in the story, copying the pictures and adding my own figures. Voted for "Wizards on Bridge", although I like them all.

the fortress tower in the foreground of the last-posted painting appears to be emblazoned with a decorative swastika, or some variation thereof? wonder if this counts as both.

OTM! wish i'd voted for that one, but got overexcited halfway through and voted instead for the ice mammoths. love these, btw. totally get the creepy nationalist/volk/SF vibe, but am still taken by the whacked-out kitsch grandeur of the vision. reminds me of the stuff that blew my mind as a kid: tripped-out roger dean dream landscapes (and yeah, their descendents in asia album covers and such), super detailed fantasy & sci-fi art, and the d'aulaires' books on greek and norse gods.

lol sure

Laugh all you want, but nationalist art was a big subject among those three. Milosevic created a grants council for artists who worked at "preserving and furthering the historic culture of the Serbian people," and much of what was produced was crap exactly like this. When some of Karadzic's "poetry" was anthologized and printed in book form, the covers of at least two of his books were reproductions of color paintings with overt nationalistic imagery that looked exactly like this (well, a little less "artificial" looking, but strikingly similar otherwise.) All three of them, in public speech, made use of imagery and (so-called) folk-legend that mirror these images ("Serbians were eating with golden spoons in castles when Germans and English were still living in sod shacks, scrapping food into their mouths with dirty hands from wooden bowls.") You may be able to make an argument discounting a lot of Milosevic's and Karadzic's uplifting of this stuff as the result of cheap political utility, but Mladic (at least) was a true believer. In any case, your "lol" seems pretty ignorant.

Ivanov, Vsevolod B. born on August 14, 1950 in Belomorsk. 1978 - graduated from art school in Tver specialty graphic designer.

Until 1974, he participated in the city, regional and single-Union exhibitions of amateur artists. After 1978 was exposed through the Union of Russian Artists.

"From a young age I knew that the Russian people mercilessly ograblyali ograblyayut and economically. But no less terrifying robbery - a perversion of the history of Russian family. Stolen from an ancient period of historical development of our Russian ancestors. Distorted the history of medieval Russia.

Faked recent history. However, over the past decade, it became possible to publish literature about the true ancient and the ancient annals of the Russian people. And I'm the man who knocked fifty years, had, as a student, to master this magnificence. Cycle "Vedic Rus" will continue until the end of the allotted period of life. My Creativity - the bridge on a sunny and beautiful world of our Russian past. They do, I'll dip into the world of our solar Russian past. Yes, and contemplation of paintings by artists such as V. Korolkov and B. Olshansky - a great joy. You realize the power of the brush, despite the development of photo, film and animation vsetaki as strong as 200 years ago. The art of Russian painter must carry and educational functions. Need to actively oppose the "globalization" of art! "

ya i think russia lends itself to this sort of multiform ethnogenetic kitsch, since it can draw on slavic, nordic, fennougric, turanian, generically 'asiatic' tropes, i suppose at a certain remove who's to say that the mayans aren't descended from some intrepid novogordians who set off across the floes on their trusty mammoths?
