Son of a bitch. I didn't know that skin grafts were full of holes.
I really thought that trypophobia was silliness or a very rare phobia experienced by total psychos, but now I see that there are many holes to be afraid of for very good reasons.
I used to love dried lotus blossoms, but NO MORE.

I don't know if this related, but I have a definite irrational fear of olive loaf or really any type of bologna that has little round stuff embedded in it. I'm perfectly at peace with salami and pepperoni and their regular flecked patterns, but if a slice of bologna is anything but perfectly pink and consistent throughout, then it creeps me out hardcore.
I didn't realize for a long time that those round yellow things with dark borders in that last photo are pistachios. knowing what they are makes them slightly less terrifying, but still, aaargh.

My first job when I was 17, I worked as a dishwasher. I was kind of a punk or something and I always wore heavy black boots. I didn’t stop to think that working in high-temperature steam environment should really change that.
Anyway, after about a month of working there, I developed all these little round holes in the skin on the bottom of my feet. I was pretty freaked out – I thought maybe it was leprosy or something. I had no fucking idea. My doctor said that my sweat was eroding the skin on my feet and maybe I should look into purchasing some better-ventilated footwear.

i have a weird horror-aversion to patterns of holes or openings in flesh (the back of the surinam toad, for instance), but in no other context do such things bother me. honeycombs, perforated tree trunks, lotus flowers - no problem. i see the potentially revolting alienness of those things, but it doesn't get me. honeycombed flesh, otoh, like those photoshopped lotus fingers, really freaks me out. seems to me that it's related to my fear of certain worms, of being maggot-riddled. remember a book of parasites that a grade school english teacher kept about that included horrid images of such things as parasitic peurocysticercosis, pages i could only handle by their edges lest my fingers touch anything unforgivable. i couldn't stop looking though.
there's something about beholding a wholly wormy thing, covered with tiny mouthlike openings from which blind white heads rhythmically emerge and then retract in wavelike patterns...

Whoah that is really interesting. Wouldn't a good soak and pumice take care of that for you, too, though? why the steak tho
― Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 22:47 (2 years ago) Permalink
Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[1][7] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping. Those who do not wish to eat live maggots place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.[8]
OK THE MAGGOTS LEAP

google tells me it's "the irrational fear of clusters of holes, pods, circles, cracks, cuts, and other asymmetrical shapes especially those found in nature," so there ya go.
it's not a medically recognized phobia though. most likely it's a dedicated troll trying to start an internet meme. someone's been creating Wikipedia entries about it since 2005, but they keep getting deleted. in the words of some Wiki dudes:
Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. See http://www.geocities.com/holephobia/trypophobia.html for someone purporting to have invented this name in 2005. No evidence in Google Scholar for any actual phobia known by this term. ---Delete. Likely hoax and borderline patent nonsense: "Trypophobia is a serious fear of hole, which results in an all-over itchy feeling and general uneasyness." Google search seems to indicate a pattern of trolling: petitions to dictionaries to include the word, posts to answers.yahoo.com, attempts to insert the word (together with shock site images) in the World of Warcraft forums.

elsewhere on the internet are trypophobia.com, an ilxor.com thread by someone named "Jesse", and this surprisingly active facebook group, led by a certain M@sai Andr3ws, where people are like "omg I've been scared of Suriname toads and wasps' nests for as long as I can remember, finally I have a word for it!"

lol so my friend that has this way worse than I do and who made me aware of the fact that this was more than just a weird quirk of mine just sent me an email (no subject) with a link that said "VOMIT". I knew immediately that it was something riddled with holes.
this doesn't actually bother me though because it's not something organic. It might, however, freak out some others like it did her:

haha that reminds me of what happened over the weekend
since the campus closed my students and I had to move to the public park to have a consultation
during the consultation one of them is freaking out, I ask her friend what's up, and she says there's a bird that's freaking her out
it's just a normal bird, but it's got this gnarly polka dot pattern thing on its neck that kinda 'shimmers' when its head moves
the student tells me she's really afraid of holes that are too close together
she tells me, "imagine if there were insects living inside those holes!!"

people, gore and slashes and stuff doesn't really count, that's cool, it happens in real life you know? it's the thought of having a perfectly normal hole in your skin that has an insect living in it that freaks me out.

I have trypophobia and I want all of you to know about it!I am trying to get rid of this phobia by:Stage 1: Admit that I have a problem.Stage 2: Face my fears by making as many holes and dots as I can and record+study my reactions and experiences that take place during each experiment.Stage 3: Cure myself by being around holes and dots all the time, i.e. make dots on my underwear and buy polkadotted bed sheets that way any time of day or night I will be in direct contact with my fears. According to a lot of scientific studies this way of therapy is very effective in curing phobias (I'd know that because I majored in psychology for 2 years prior to switching to graphic design).

What's OTM and CPT? The shredded hand is considered a repetitive pattern, which is part of trypophobia. There are a lot of disturbing images, such as skin grafts, that are also part of the phobia. Steve, all those melting faces, zombies getting hit by cars, cats with no faces, etc. have nothing to do with the phobia. Let's be fair here.

I think you might have missed the actual images in buff's retaliatory posts.
And you may be right about a more established poster not being banned, but when someone joins a group or community and immediately behaves like a disrespectful asshole, he or she isn't going to be given the deference that a long term user might be.

And for the record, I was repulsed by all the melted faces, zombie being hit by a car and stuff all over the windshield, that poor cat with no face, none of which is trypophobic. Also, all the surinam toad videos is a little on the overkill side. The chopped up pig shows animal mutilation, albeit livestock. I'll do my best with not posting "gross" photos as you say, even though I'm not sure where to draw the line, as the melting faces posted above are vomit inducing. Perhaps the administrator of this thread should create a list of do's and don'ts as far as exactly what type of photos are allowed to be posted. I belong to the trypopobia group in Facebook, and that group has over 2,000 photos in its gallery, so I have several to choose from to post here. FYI, the group has no animations such as the zombie-car one here. They're all related to trypophobia. The fact that I was banned for a few days made me feel that I was treated unfairly, but now that I'm back, I'll try to keep in mind what and what not to post here. When I was referring to "unconstitutional," I was referring to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In the future, should I offend anyone, please say so, and if it is decided that I should be banned, I request a fair warning before that is accomplished. Thank you.

I just browsed this thread today, for the first time in a few weeks since I'd last bookmarked it, and (completely objectively & w/ zero insider knowledge), I'm p. sure u got tempbanned more for the quantity of consecutive posts & not so much the extremity thereof.

It was unknown to me that there is a maximum amount of photos to be posted in this thread. If there is, I'd like to know that information. I still feel that I was treated unfairly, since I had no information or guidelines to go by. If someone would point out where that is written, I will read it and bookmark it for my future use.

U got banned because people said oh hey stop posting super gross stuff and you responded with oh yeah u can't silence me and posted even grosser stuff which if you are being fair is pretty much a full asshole move.

I still would like to see guidelines as to what is deemed "gross," as most trypophobic images are in fact gross. That particular photo I posted (the hand) is in the facebook photo gallery and has not been deleted by the administrator of that group. It is considered a "repetitive pattern" or "cluster." Those are images considered to be trypophobic, as I am sure you all are aware of. The same goes for skin grafts. They are considered a repetitive pattern, and some trypophobes consider the image to contain "holes." Lastly, as a 63-year-old grandmother, I would appreciate that swear words such as "asshole" and "fuck you" not be used when writing a post directed at me. It's not necessary in order to get a point across. Thank you!!
― buffandmaxsmom, Sunday, 29 May 2011 06:16 (1 year ago) Permalink
Justen, are you the administrator of this group?
― buffandmaxsmom, Sunday, 29 May 2011 06:22 (1 year ago) Permalink
I mean, come on, there is a difference between an inanimate object with a series of holes, and a hand mutilated by a paper shredder. Surely you can realize this. Yes, skin grafts and melty faces are also gross, but somewhere there is a line and I guess enough people agree that mutilated hands crosses it.
just fyi A) first amendment does not actually grant you the right to say whatever you want to whomever you want with 0 consequences B) US federal and state censorship laws do not really apply to having your images on a message board modified; if you were contacted by authorities and told it was illegal to post gross pictures on a message board, that would be a slightly different story.

Yes, I saw the list of the other special interest groups. Since I've had trypophobia since I was a child (along with my sister), I now have the internet and can see how many others have it and what images skeeve people out. The facebook group has over 4,000 members. This group is more edgy, which is why I joined, and then I got tossed out. The offending photo is posted in the facebook trypo gallery, which contains over 2,000 photos. Anyway, very few people are offended by that photo. {I wasn't the one who posted it by the way.) There was a debate as to what caused the injury to the woman's hand. It was decided it was caused by a paper shredder. Since the facebook group is more conservative than this one, I was taken aback when people here complained about it. The only image that facebook forbids is nudity, which is why the "lotus boob" or "lotus testicles" are not allowed to be posted there. FYI, a number of trypophobes suffer from other underlying issues, such as anxiety disorders, OCD, ADD, depression, bipolar disorders, and others. Just sayin'.

WP: Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. See http://www.geocities.com/holephobia/trypophobia.html for someone purporting to have invented this name in 2005. No evidence in Google Scholar for any actual phobia known by this term. —Largo Plazo (talk) 13:08, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Delete. Likely hoax and borderline patent nonsense: Trypophobia is a serious fear of hole, which results in an all-over itchy feeling and general uneasyness. Google search seems to indicate a pattern of trolling: petitions to dictionaries to include the word, posts to answers.yahoo.com, attempts to insert the word (together with shock site images) in the World of Warcraft forums. - Smerdis of Tlön (talk) 15:32, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

thing is, when you post pictures of groups of insects, worms, whatever ― even if they're hairy ― and have no problem at all with complex perforation patterns in man-made material, i wonder whether your fascination really has anything to do with the fear of holes, per se.
it sounds more like you're grossed out by a sort of insectile complexity. human beings (some say) are biologically programmed to be repulsed by things that are insect or snake-like, though we all experience these sensations differently.

knitted car reminds me of an whimsical bent wire car i saw at a paris auto show as a kid. its weblike complexity fascinated me but i also found it subtly disturbing. wish i could find a picture...
a few years later, when i was 7 or so, i had a terrible fever during which i hallucinated not only pulsating black holes that would open in the floor to swallow people, but that everything around me had turned into these insanely complex constructions of translucent webbing, fractal things in which every intersection unspun to reveal a thousand more. here that sense of "subtly disturbing" intricacy was blown open into screaming terror, as the incomprehensibility of this new world seemed both wrathful and profoundly evil to me. probably as close as i've ever come to being truly insane (debatable, of course), and my only real brush with something like trypophobia.
the holes part was a lot like (and perhaps influenced by?) this:

ignoring a phobia doesn't make it go away. at best you can just hide it away for a long time until it inevitably sprouts up stronger than ever in a sickening mass of clusters and holes and pods and baby toads that take over your brane. better just to put it all out in the open and let exposure therapy do its trick.

For Forrest Fulton Architecture‘s competition proposal, the Alabama-based firm designed a 900,000 sqf biomorphic spatial surface that connects the adjacent city and the landscape. The architecture focuses on creating an urbanistic landscape that morphs the common urban element of Yerevan, the superblock, to the site, a truncated hill along the natural amphitheater of the Yerevan. This new model of development supports a “holistic, ultra-green lifestyle” with overlapping natural and urban phenomenon. The artificial “hill”, which is clothed in native plants irrigated with a recycled gray water system, creates viewing seats for the Yerevan and Mt. Ararat. The exterior perforations recall the intricate details of traditional Armenian lace needlework. These apertures are not mere surface treatments but rather terraced exterior space that provide amazing views.

The BORÅBorås Park Pavilions and Skating Rink is a place for summer play and winter games, designed by Carl Fredrik Svenstedt Architect. A glazed winter garden and a bandstand are sited in the park as rounded forms, thin perforated shells clearly visible from the city centre. The shells form a meeting point where several paths intersect, thereby framing an open glade towards the south, towards a skating rink, a children’s playground in the sunshine. A third shell, the closed sphere of a machine shed reinforces this orientation of the park.

I found another entry to the same Yerevan building contest, and of course it's just as wonderful and batshit as the first one:
Mercedes Benz Hotel TowerThe shape of the building symbolically represents the biblical Mt. Ararat. It takes the idea of two terraced cylindrical towers connected at the ground floor. The higher tower is a hotel and business centre and the lower is occupied with apartments. The two towers are connected by the public area which includes, shopping, exhibition and restaurants combined with the hotel lobby and business entrance. Parking is located mainly in the garage under the ground floor, with part of the fast parking and taxi/bus drop off outside at the Plato.

The two towers are connected by the public area which includes, shopping, exhibition and restaurants combined with the hotel lobby and business entrance. Parking is located mainly in the garage under the ground floor, with part of the fast parking and taxi/bus drop off outside at the Plato.
what's with these American architects trying to foist their trypophilic agenda on Armenia? I bet financing either project would require 1000 times Armenia's entire GDP, so I doubt either of these will come to anything.

Those crochet-looking fractals are pretty neat. And I do think that if people who love high-end stereo equipment can call themselves an audiophile (and conversely audiophobes for those who hate/have an irrational fear of hi-fi) then there's no reason one cannot self-label as a trypophile. This thread is drenched in philia rather than phobia anyway.

The accepted name for the phobia is trypophobia. Since there's no such phobia or word as tripophilia, it would be too confusing. What's the importance of the name change? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
― buffandmaxsmom, Friday, 24 June 2011 00:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
There's no such word as trypophobia either, in any dictionary I can find. "Phobia" does not accurately or fully cover the range of reactions in this thread.

Anyway, back to the holes
― Jesse, Friday, 24 June 2011 01:32 (1 year ago) Permalink
The toad doesn't have holes, it has clusters of eggs on its back. The eggs are absorbed by the mother's back. When they hatch, then they leave holes.
As far as the word trypophobia is concerned, it is in the urban dictionary. The administrator of the group in Facebook is working on getting it into the Oxford dictionary since there are so many people who suffer from trypophobia (over 4,000 in the FB group alone) and there are whole slew of triggers. You all know that if you google trypophobia, you get hundreds of hits. I tried googling tripophilia, and the only thing I got was a couple of YouTube videos in Spanish.
I realize that I'm not the most liked person in this group, constantly being attacked, the latest of which I've been referred as an acid head. You guys need to grow up and stop with the finger pointing and name calling. I've had trypophobia probably before you all were born and when most of you were all just a gleam in your daddies' eyes. So please stop with the amateur diagnoses. There are varying degrees of trypophobia, from mild to severe. Just because I post a large number of photos, it doesn't mean that I'm not trypophobic. I just like posting photos, and have no ulterior motive. So please stop picking on me!

OK I have to say this whether anyone cares or not: Jenny and I were waitresses in a quasi-not-really-fine-dining "Asian/Low Country fusion" restaurant in North Carolina. Every Wednesday they had live music (easy listening type covers) by the duo "Buff and T." Buff was a 30-ish tall, skinny, sorta sexy blonde and T was a tall, dark-skinned African-American man with a shiny shaved head.
All I can think when I see buffandmaxsmom's name IA that she is mother of those two.

Oh shit! Zing Touch messed up. I had posted that every time when Buff and T did Jonie Mitchell's "Clouds," I sang "I've seen Buff from both sides now." But I guess Jenny had the lyrics right.
I Googled them and they are NOWHERE TO BE FOUND :(
If only their mother hadn't flounced, we could ask her where her children are these days.

I might still have the Buff and T cd you stole.

― phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Friday, 24 June 2011 23:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
Which always really bothered me b/c it didn't make sense for Buff to sing that she'd seen Buff from both sides.

Caul fat is the fatty membrane which surrounds internal organs of some animals, such as cows, sheep, and pigs, also known as the greater omentum.
It is often used as a natural sausage casing and to encase fegatelli (Italian), faggots (English), or pâté (French). Caul fat is also known as Lace Fat.

Meet the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium:
This is your brain on pork tapeworm:
Neurocysticercosis affects 50 million worldwide, presenting as headaches and acute onset seizures, and even observant jews regularly get it, if their food has been handled by infected individuals.
Seroprevalence of cysticercosis in an Orthodox Jewish community. Am J Trop Med Hyg. 1995 Nov;53(5):439-42.
Cysticercosis antibodies were detected in 23 (1.3%) of 1,789 persons from 612 families...Exposure to T. solium in this community is unexpectedly high. Widespread employment of domestic workers from endemic regions and high employee turnover contributes to exposure risk.

buffandmaxsmom, what are your favorite strategies finding trypophobia images? in the past I just googled whatever came to mind — "porous sac", "thousands of tiny holes", "perforated tissue", "Seal's face" — but I'm starting to run out of inspiration, starting to wonder if there are any good medical dictionaries or thesauruses that will give me some more search terms to work with. I suppose the lazy way out is to just google "trypophobia" but then you end up with pages and pages of trite lotus breasts and surinam toads and nothing new to contribute to the field. it's always thrilling to find some obscure hole-y thing that hasn't yet been appropriated by the trypophobia community, like the caul fat thing I found a few weeks ago. but the novelty is starting to wear off lately, what can I do?

I get a lot of trypo images from the facebook trypo group's gallery, although the group's not allowing uploading anymore photos, the reason of which I won't explain here. The hand that was mangled in a shredder is in that gallery, and when I uploaded it here, I was temporarily banned, so unfortunately you have to be careful of what you upload in this group, which I find laughable, but I don't have any control over that. The facebook trypo group administrator started a trypo gallery in Yogile, so I get some of my material from there. A fellow facebook trypo friend started her own gallery in facebook, which is where I got the nailed pumpkin. If you periodically google certain patterns like "honeycomb" you will find new images that weren't there a few months before. Googling "trypophobia" only shows the same old shit (lotus boob, lotus pod, surinam toad). You just have to be creative and have a lot of time on your hands such as myself. BTW, those caul pics almost make me want to puke. Haven't seen anything worse than that for a while now. Good job!!! LOL ;)

@Jenny - When photos were uploaded in FB's trypo group, they would appear in both the group's wall and in the gallery. We were able to delete the photo from the wall and it would still be in the gallery. For reasons unknown to the group and administrator, FB changed that procedure. Now if you upload a photo and then delete it from the wall, it would also be deleted in the gallery. After the change, photos were being uploaded and appearing on the wall and people claimed they were freaking out and demanding that the photos be deleted. The administrator decided to ask that no more photos be uploaded. People have complied. The gallery is still there with photos uploaded before FB changed the procedure.

When I was in 9th grade our music class tried to raise money by selling those overpriced big chocolate bars for $5 each. At the end of the school year we still had many left, so they were stashed in a box underneath the raised stairs that the band and choir stood on so we could sell the rest come autumn. When we returned from the summer break, the remaining 30 or so chocolate bars looked EXACTLY like that book - all sorts of creepy-crawlies had helped themselves to the sweets, eating right through the paper and foil wrappers to get to the chocolate.
