― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 May 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link
The naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber), also known as the sand puppy or desert mole rat, is a burrowing rodent native to parts of East Africa and the only species currently classified in genus Heterocephalus. It is one of only two known eusocial mammals (the other being the Damaraland mole rat) and has a highly unusual set of physical traits that enables it to thrive in a harsh, underground environment, including a lack of pain sensation in its skin and a very low metabolism.
― (latebloomer) (latebloomer), Monday, 17 May 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link
The naked mole rat is one of the two species of mammals that exhibit eusociality. This eusocial organisation social structure, similar to that found in ants, termites, and some bees and wasps, is very rare among mammals. The Damaraland Mole Rat (Cryptomys damarensis) is the only other eusocial mammal currently known.
Queen and Gestation
The relationships between the queen and the breeding males may last for many years, others females are temporally sterile. Queens live from 13 to 18 years, and are extremely hostile to other females behaving like queens, or producing hormones for becoming queens. When the queen dies, another female takes her place, sometimes after a violent struggle with her competitors.
Gestation is about 70 days. A litter typically ranges from three to twelve pups, but may be as large as 28. The average litter size is 11.[4] In the wild, naked mole-rats usually breed once a year, if the litter survives. In captivity, they breed all year long and can produce a litter every 80 days.[5] The young are born blind and weigh about 2 grams (0.071 oz). The queen nurses them for the first month; after which the other members of the colony feed them feces until they are old enough to eat solid food.

The so-called ghost slug first appeared in South Wales gardens in 2006, possibly after arriving as a stowaway in imported potted plants. The nocturnal predator is armed with blade-like teeth (see inset) for slicing through animal flesh and can measure up to 5 inches (13 centimeters) long when stalking its prey. They engulf worms piece by piece. One end of the worm will still be alive while the other is being gradually ratcheted into the slug by the teeth.

I think parasites that prey on humans sorta belong in their own category. ordinary bedbugs and ticks scare me way more than any fancy egg-backed toads or tongue-eating crabs. at a distance, even the most monstrous animals can seem almost cute, but the moment a living thing burrows into my body, it shuts off the part of my brain that goes "awwwwwwwwww."

Ascaris lumbricoides is the giant roundworm of human, belonging to the phylum Nematoda. It is an ascarid nematode responsible for the disease ascariasis in human. It is the largest and most common parasitic worm in humans. A quarter of human population is estimated to be infected by this parasite. Ascariasis is prevalent worldwide and more so in tropical and subtropical countries.
It can reach a length of up to 35 cm

the hagfish's trick is exuding loads of mucus-slime to escape predators and clog fish gills to suffocate them. then they tie themselves in knots to scrape the slime off. they are known to eat their prey from the inside out. they have four hearts and two brains and their gametes are released through openings in their digestive system.

scary!
The Madagascar cockroach has become a popular pet because of its hissing sound, large size, and appearance. Their nickname, "hissing cockroach", is due to their ability to force air through the breathing pores (spiracles) found on their abdomen. The Madagascar hissing cockroach is believed to be the only insect that can growl in this exact manner,[1] as most insects that make a "hissing" sound do so by rubbing together various body parts

Coconut crab!
This hermit crab, with its intimidating size and strength, has a special position in the culture of many human societies which share its range. The coconut crab is admired for its strength, and it is said that villagers use this animal to guard their coconut plantations. The coconut crab, especially if it is not yet fully grown, is also sold as a pet, for example, in Tokyo.[35] The cage must be strong enough that the animal cannot use its powerful claws to escape. Should a coconut crab pinch a person, it will not only cause pain, but is unlikely to release its grip.
Thomas Hale Streets reports the following trick, used by Micronesians of the Line Islands, to get a coconut crab to loosen its grip: It may be interesting to know that in such a dilemma a gentle titillation of the under soft parts of the body with any light material will cause the crab to lose its hold.

HAHA!
The Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a lemur, a strepsirrhine primate native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unusual method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out.
Many Malagasy natives think they are devil-creatures, and beat them to death on sight.

In other insects, where females have evolved an upper hand in the war of the sexes, males have developed even more extreme counter-strategies. Look no further than the common bedbug – the male bypasses the female’s genitals altogether and stabs his sharp penis straight into the female’s back, a technique known appropriately as traumatic insemination.

That is a tarantula hawk.
The tarantula hawk is relatively docile and rarely stings without provocation. However the sting, particularly of Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes.[3] Commenting on his own experience, one researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations."[2] In terms of scale, the wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, second only to that of the bullet ant and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric".[4]

Is this index a joke?
1.8 Bullhorn acacia ant: A rare, piercing, elevated sort of pain. Someone has fired a staple into your cheek.
2.0 Bald-faced hornet: Rich, hearty, slightly crunchy. Similar to getting your hand mashed in a revolving door.
2.0 Yellowjacket: Hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.
3.0 Paper wasp: Caustic and burning. Distinctly bitter aftertaste. Like spilling a beaker of hydrochloric acid on a paper cut.
