Dirty Vicar to thread.
DV (dirtyvicar) wrote this on thread Iranian Shit Talk on board I Love Everything on Oct 31, 2005
how do you get israel "off the map" without using the iranians' ahem proposed methods? did yer man actually say what he meant by "removing Israel from the map"? I would quite like if I opened a world atlas tomorrow to find there was no Israel there, but instead a new country, The Happy Republic of Palestine Where People People Of All Faiths Including Jews, Christians, And Muslims Enjoy Full Civil & Religious Rights And Get To Play With Hyraxes All Day Long (this would be its official title). On the other hand, I suspect that Mr Iranian President is thinking more in terms of ethnic cleansing.
Did he say anything about means, or is this the usual "Country X must be destroyed!" thing that people rhetorically say every so often?
The Real Dirty Vicar wrote this on thread so Hamas' new government is broke on board I Love Everything on Jun 15, 2007
most days I think the world would be better off if Israel/Palestine/Lebanon just slid into the fucking ocean and we were rid of this endless internecine gangster-warfare
it would make me very sad if these countries fell into the ocean, as I would like to go back to them again for a holiday sometime.
Just thinking of these countries falling into the ocean is making me all sadface... the little hyraxes can swim, so what will they do? why doesn't anybody think of them?

I am surprised that it has not came up in this thread that the fossilized urine of this little creature, which is known as Hyraceum, is commonly used in perfume. I was working at my friend's perfume store and one customer asked what was one of the weirdest scents so I gave her a whiff of the pure essence of Hyraceum to see what she thought. She said "well, it just smells like elephants to me". That was probably the most impressive thing that happened to me while working there.

What is it about perfume being made from revolting things like whale barf and deer sweat... and HYDRAX PISS!? :|
― Bloompsday (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 05:46 (twelve years ago) link
Their urine is quite concentrated because they are a desert animal and it's more like gel than water. Whole colonies of them piss in the same designated toilet area for sometimes thousands of years so it really builds up and eventually petrifies. Under those circumstances you can imagine it would have a nice rich scent. ha-ha. This is true by the way.
― everything, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 14:10 (twelve years ago) link
To answer you question Trayce, these scents are principally worthwhile for perfume because they contain a lot pheromones. Most animal produce and expel pheromones from their body but in the case of hyraceum, ambergris (whale puke), muskdeer, castoreum (a beaver urine/nipple grease secretion), civet and so on, these animals have a couple of things in common - a specific, super-active gland that produces pheromones in huge quantities and also the secretion is not particularly offensive to human noses. ie. the best you can say is that they smell "interesting".

More: Thong Underwear Turning Forty Migrating Birds
Print Flag
Who knew? I was devastated. I turned forty, needed a mammogram, bifocal glasses, anti-wrinkle products, a fiber supplement, and now granny panties?
Sure enough, I found out through my research that doctors are concerned about the health implications of wearing thong underwear. Recurrent vaginal infections are more common in thong wearers. The string part can inflame the skin, leading to thrush which is a yeast infection of the skin that thrives in warm, moist environments. Another concern is bacteria can travel along that little string from the rectum to the vaginal area. Everyone knows that you wipe from front to back, not the other way around, so wearing thong underwear defeats that purpose. The chafing that occurs can negatively impact the whole genital area and leave the area more susceptible to infections. Bladder infections and urinary tract infections are more common in thong wearers, too.

But it sings:
Arik Kershenbaum and colleagues at the University of Haifa and Tel Aviv University have found something more surprising. Hyraxes’ songs have something rarely found in mammals: syntax that varies according to where the hyraxes live, geographical dialects in how they put their songs together. The research was published online Wednesday in The Proceedings of the Royal Society B.Bird songs show syntax, this ordering of song components in different ways, but very few mammals make such orderly, arranged sounds. Whales, bats and some primates show syntax in their vocalizations, but nobody really expected such sophistication from the hyrax, and it was thought that the selection of sounds in the songs were relatively random.Hyraxes are common in Africa and the Middle East, and there are quite a lot of them where Mr. Kershenbaum lives. He kept hearing their songs and thinking, “I simply don’t believe that these complex songs can be totally random.”So he and his colleagues recorded hyraxes around Israel and analyzed the makeup of the songs using mathematical techniques drawn from genetic analysis. They found a complex syntax that did vary. They suspect that the dialects may be carried by males when they leave their home territory as they mature, and that changes in dialect come as other hyraxes copy the songs imperfectly or improvise.Their songs are not like those of birds, as you might imagine by the way scientists have broken down the notes, or syllables, of hyrax arias. The five kinds of sounds are the “wail,’ ‘chuck,’ ‘snort,’ ‘squeak’ and ‘tweet.’ ”
