what's the point when you have FB status updates?

I'm an addict.

The status updates on facebook are one of my favourite aspects of FB, so I liked the idea of twitter when I first heard about it a week or so ago. I've signed up, but it hasn't stuck with me as yet, I think because none of my friends are using it.

It's reduced all my literary ambitions down to daily one-liners: twitter.com/fireland

So much hate for Twitter. So much.

Twitter is for productivity douche-bags and aspirational web developers.

I used to use Twitter quite a lot, but Facebook status updates reach a lot more of my friends, and I can do them from my phone as easily as a Twitter so I've kind of abandoned it.

I think Twitter is good for publishing interesting links and news and things, and for asking advice from the microblogosphere, but for the latter you'd need a whole load of like-minded followers and it's hard to get there.

I think I will have to use it for a while before I decide if I love it or hate it.

I use Twitter to keep up with a very small handful of friends (FreakyTrigger mob mostly) so mine is mostly a collection of stupid injokes that come to my mobile. I like that a lot, saves me having to text loads of people at once, but it freaks me out when I see random strangers following me. I have to purge my followers list about once a week.

This is the key, really. Twitter got some ferocious use at wwdc, and was v. good for finding out what was giong on where, and what sessions to leave, etc, but it doesn't work so well if you've just trucked up in some random place.

There's a twitter client for iPhone that might help with that though -- it shows you all the updates from folks in your location.

I never understood why anyone would want tweets pushed to them. I get excited when I receive a text. I don't want to find it's some spazz like me telling the world they've found an odd-coloured bogey up their nose.

it would be nice, when the iphone's push service is switched on, if twitter would push messages down to twitterific - this would solve the 'excited when I receive a text only to find it's about a bogey' problem

If my phone had let me assign unique message alert tones to numbers like it does with ringtones and voice calls then the problem might have gone away.

Maybe the fundamental problem is that I'm not interested enough in other people.

most of twitter is exquisitely described in metaphor by that news story about the inflatable turd named "Complex Shit" blowing away and breaking actual stuff that matters

of course being me I would say the same for pretty much everything "web 2.0"

actually, i'd follow a tombot twitter feed. furious cynicism at unexpected moments could be fun.

i guess twitterific might step up to the plate here, but then again: it can't run in the background on the iPhone, can it?

Used it cause I was excited (are you still an early adopter a full year after the SXSW explosion of use?), then didn't for a few months cause I didn't really see the point, now I'm usin it again cause I've had some new local friends start following me.

Good for questions, link-sharing, Microemo bursts, etc.

I have a friend who uses this to read his friends' feeds, so I basically only see it from the angle of a person who is constantly checking his phone while I'm trying to have a conversation with him. The first time I heard of Twitter was from him when I finally got exasperated with his constantly checking his phone.

Maybe I'm the one with the problem, but I can't really think of anyone in the world interesting enough for me to want updates on their activities throughout the day. I'd say the only people I could imagine wanting to twitter could be: Drug smuggler, violent prison inmate, Slash-in-his-heyday type rock star, and a dog (if they somehow managed to translate its thoughts into English text).

SMS functionality seems to be its USP now that Facebook status updates have taken the mainstream microblogging space.

As I said above, people using it for pushed news bulletins and question-broadcasting rather than personal what-i'm-doing stuff is another application.

When I find something that a bunch of people I dislike are all hating on, I often think, chances are, I'm going to like it. Twitter is one of those things. I just wish other people would update it as much as I want to read it. But, erm, I am having a hard time finding people to follow. :-(

I sync my twitter and facebook status. What's annoying about it?

i find it annoying and i have an irl friend who does it! i have yet to say anything to him. i feel like twitter is one thing, facebook another, so update accordingly.

My little brother twittered the other day onto facebook a tinyurl link that led back to a blog he wrote about twitter. Not gonna gas him, but I am gonna smack him upside his head next time I see him.

I am perfectly comfortable with using the Facebook status as microblog space, even though it breaks the format of "Kenan is..." and looks dumb. I figure that's Facebook's fault, not mine. Besides, I only have so many random song lyrics and useless chunks of head debris to go around. Why spread it thinner?

Also, people comment on my Facebook status, not so much on my Twitter page.

The only thing worse than web 2.0 wanks is people who get all pissy about web 2.0 wanks.

(FWIW: I'm a web 2.0 wank who syncs his Facebook status with Twitter. I was going to do an update earlier saying "This combined Twitter and Facebook update is dedicated to Dommy P" but I really couldn't be arsed.)

National Post technology reporter David George-Cosh let loose on a marketing consultant from Toronto today. Apparently feeling snubbed April Dunford, an experienced marketing professional hadn’t called him back on time for a story he was working on; he took exception to her annoyed Tweet after their phone call:

At just about 1:00 pm EST, April Dunford tweets: “Reporter to me “When the media calls you, you jump, OK!?” Why, when you called me and I’m not selling? Newspapers will get what they deserve”

There are twitter spamreaders like anywhere else. The real randoms kinda disturb me, like... hey! I'm not a celebrity. Is your life that boring that you have to follow me rambling on about gay porn and synth sequencers?

I see it as a means to having actual interesting conversations, not just following other people's lives. I'm about to ditch Stephen Fry because despite loving his work I find him distinctly boring, and the mechanics of attempting conversation with a complete stranger who has 170,000 followers is patently ridiculous (although Charlie Brooker gets to stay because he's actually worth reading).

Adam - my twitter is c h e r r y 2 0 0 0 r o o l z but I don't know how long I'll persevere with this one. On the one hand, it suits the essentially trivial nature of my thoughts. On the other hand, it's a bit of a waste of everyone's time, let's be honest.

It's definitely a waste of time, but so's ilx to be honest. It's what fun you get out of it that counts.

Twitter seems to be gaining momentum. I need to fill a big dirty facebook-shaped hole with something; Twitter might not be it, but without trying I'll never know.

Trayce: Your 'home' page (i.e. not the one with your username in the url) contains feeds of those whom you follow. Makes sense once you actually do it.

I'm about to ditch Stephen Fry because despite loving his work I find him distinctly boring

I find him quite fun; what I can't stand is the way he's now re-Tweeting so much stuff (eg the thing about the blank profile yesterday) because so many of his followers are obviously fucking bell-ends.

From a social-psychology angle I'm fascinated by the way the 'sleb Twitterers deal with having unfettered, two-way access to their fans. Graham Linehan is a joy.

Well, it's pretty reductively only as interesting as the people you follow (or, rather, as interesting as you find the people you follow to be). I guess it depends what you deem an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio: me, I enjoy skimming over the quotidian musings of other people (cf Facebook) and find some of it very entertaining, even if only for a moment or two.

But if you're expecting a non-stop open channel of wit and wisdom, Twitter is probably never going to be the place to go.

Guys, PR people are obsessed with Twitter. This UK journo is taking pitches for 2 days only via his Twitter:

You know what, I think my interest in Twitter is bordering on an obsession. This is the third blog post in a row that I've focused on the site and I'm sure it won't be the last!

It's getting to the point that the only time I don't tweet is when I'm asleep although I'm sure it won't be long until some bright spark creates an app that means I can even twitter via my dreams!

On a serious point though, Twitter is proving hugely advantageous. Not only is it improving BusinessZone.co.uk's traffic figures but its positive impact on my role as a journalist can't be questioned.

It's becoming very common, for instance, for news stories to break on Twitter and the times recently when people have alerted me to a story hours after I'd read it in a tweet are too numerous to list.

With all that mind, I've decided to run a little experiment and to the public relations executives reading this blog it's time for you to pay special attention.

The journalist/PR relationship is a strange one. I admit I'm prone to the odd rant following a call from someone pitching me a story which is completely irrelevant to the subjects I write about or far too advertorial to warrant coverage but unfortunately given my job, listening to the occassional pitch which I can do nothing with is a necessary evil.

But PRs, it's time for a change!

I really don't have time to take irrelevent calls but I will read tweets so next Monday and Tuesday - 23rd and 24th February - I will only accept PR pitches via Twitter. That means you have just 140 characters to grab my attention so it had better be good. I will only deal with single tweets so no pitches which expand into multiple updates will be considered.

If you're not on Twitter and you plan on giving me a call, I'd advise registering now and the usernames you need to bear in mind are @---------------- and @----------------. The best stories will get covered and I'll even publish your tweets.

"Filtering" - yeah. that leads to a (probably clumsy) anaology I was thinking of earlier: our brains take in *everything* we see and hear but we dont process most of it conciously. If we did, we'd be overloaded. Thats what the sub/unconcious is for.

In this way, I see the massive overload of media, of the always-on contact via text message, email, blogs, news websites, tv, phonecalls... people are hammered hammered hammered all day long. "I heard that HOURS ago you're slow" you get told when you pass on a bit of news. There's only so much the poor brain can take in and still process in a cohesive fashion before we all start to just not take in anything sensible whatsoever.

OK this obviously goes way beyond twitter so this probably isn't the thread for it, but it's something I find interesting.

2. Twitter occupies a place that is not for well-thought-out dissertations, and its existence does not foreshadow the death of the attention span

I've read peoples feeds, I havent "used" it and it just isnt something I'd find useful or interesting. I get no use out of FB or anything similar to this, I dont run RSS feeds - constant information networking just isnt my bag. I'm not yr usual interwebs-user I guess. Also, I am beginning to notice Twitter having a deleterious effect on me. It's nice in some ways, that I've reconnected with old friends of mine who moved to LA, and I haven't seen in years, suddenly it's like being dropped back into the minutia of their lives in the way that we used to be when we lived across the road from one another.

But I really really need to disconnect from my celebrity twitter because they're showing off (well, don't know if they are, it felt last night like they were) in a way that just made me feel shit and crap about mine own life. And I suddenly started to feel very, very empty, that here was me being a voyeur on a person that would never actually talk to me - and instead of feeling excited - like, why was this person posting this stuff? To make his fans feel like they were "there in his place"? But it didn't feel like that, it felt like he is a celebrity, having this exciting shiny life, and I'm lying in bed with inky fingers and feeling very flat.

But I just can't disconnect myself from the drip feed, because I'm *obsessed* - it's the one part of obsessive compulsion I can never seem to shake.

The internet spreading to mobile devices has a lot to do with that, e.g. trying to convey a complex thought on a bloody iphone.

Recently there've been SO many occasions on which I've wanted to respond to something in detail and have just written 'wtf u mad' instead.

Which is why I wont use mobile devices for such things (and yes I have an ipod touch with wireless access). It is impossible to read or write anything of substance on them.

And I dont want to reduce myself and the things I take in to nothing but fluff and no substance. Some fluff is ok. Nothing but, is not.

Also, having and using one in such a manner encourages being glued to the internet all day long. We dont carry TV around and glue ourselves to it on the train, at work, at lunch, on the toilet. Why do we do it with the internet?

I also use the twitter gadget for gmail mainly, rather than the actual twitter site, since my gmail is almost always running. Very handy.

I just set up a twitter account about a month ago. I'm not sure why - I don't have a mobile phone so basically all my tweets (is that the term? seriously?) are like "I'm at my computer. Doing stuff on my computer."

The other day I uploaded some photos to zenfolio, then wrote a blog entry about said photos/events, then twittered that I'd written the blog entry, then did a facebook status update to point out the twitter post...

What bugs me about Twitter, I'm starting to discover, isn't so much the form as the content. Plenty of terrific writers and thinkers have believed in the idea that any statement could be conveyed well enough in 250 words or less (140 words I'm not sure), but the problem with so much blogging and, in this case, micro-blogging is that the content is almost always mundane and ultimately worthless.

I'm reminded of Dalrymple's recent quote that "celebrity is the magic fairy dust that makes the mundane fascinating" and that "modern celebrity is the common man worshiping himself" and wonder if the recent idea people have (namely that any mundane thought or experience that they might have is ipso facto interesting to somebody or, at the very least, worthy of being shared online) is tied into concepts like the one Dalrymple mentioned.

I think that after years and years of being taught to be idolaters (or at the very least uber toleraters) of movie stars, rock stars, celebs and pop culture figures in general, people are attracted to sites that essentially let them play the vain celebrity they will, in all likelihood, never get to be otherwise. If Brad Pitt - who outside of handsome looks and light charm is essentially no different than you - can draw interest with what he had for dinner with his wife last night - why shouldn't you?! Do we not live in a democratic society? Many of the ideas behind Facebook apps - and twitter as a site - seems to be having artificial intelligence play the Access Hollywood-styled interviewer who flatters you with interest in your ennui and daily ephemera ("Hurry and compile lists of your _______. What are you doing RIGHT NOW? We're dying to know your answers!").

It's the intellectual equivalent of those tourist trap booths that, for a price, will stick your face on the cover of Time Magazine and let you keep a copy for yourself. The idea is to indulge you in a fantasy of being really important and, like many celebrities, no talent is required, we'll just skip to the part where we're interested in everything about you.

*As a disclaimer, I know that there are plenty of uses for Facebook - and even Twitter - that aren't directly related to narcissism, and that both sites (though I've not really used Twitter) can be fun. This is just pondering at a strange hour.
