I don't generally have a problem talking about boobs, since my friends know I'm not a sexist pig or anything (and it's not like the discourse is on the level of "Har har, look at those hooters!" or anything), but I've noticed some folks find it sorta weird. So should I just keep my mouth shut if there are people I'm less familiar with around?

No, but I once did, for example, ask a friend whether her boobs had gotten bigger. Which turned out to be an accurate observation, since she later told me she was pregnant.

I don't think she really was that bothered about the question. We're close friends, for example when were flatmates she asked to wheel a lump on her breast.

I don't think he should feel embarrassed to notice the sunburn. If you wear a top that reveals part of the breast, then it's perfectly appropriate to look at that part of the breast. Commenting on the breasts is perhaps not appropriate though.
In general, revealing part of the breast puts that part of the breast out into the public sphere and it will be noticed (And it is safe to assume that the women wants people to notice that part of the breast, otherwise why expose it?)

First of all, I don't think talking about boobs is necessarily "checking out their bodies" - if I'm good friends with a person, they know I'm not thinking about them in an erotic sense, so it could be the equivalent of saying, "You're nose nose looks red today!" (Ailsa's sunburn story is a pretty good example). Secondly, if I've known someone for years, I'm bound to know what their body looks like too. Like in the case mentioned, I'd lived together with this girl as flatmates, so I was bound to notice that her boobs had gotten bigger. Of course I wouldn't say anything like "your tits seem to be sagging today" or "you seem to be getting fatter", but friends still talk about each other bodies, and boobs aren't an absolute taboo in this sense. Just yesterday I was out with a friend who was wearing a loose dress and no bra, and we were talking about how her boobs might pop out. It had nothing to do with checking anyone out, just the sort of jokes friends might make.
But anyway, I do occasionally talk about boobs with my friends (other people's and theirs), and it's not an issue. I guess I was more interested on how outside observers might view this, because there have been a few situations where other have witnessed these discussions, and afterwards I've wondered whether they've thought I'm rude just for mentioning the subject, or did they realize it was a friendly discussion. Because I wouldn't want the fear of being labeled a sexist limit the things I can talk about, and I don't think merely mentioning boobs is sexist, though it can still be rude of course. But still, girls talk about boobs with each other, and even though my gender and sexual orientation obviously makes it a bit different from me, I don't consider the subject a taboo among friends.
― Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 12 June 2006 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link
While I can see your point re: familiarity and noticing when something's different, I stand by what I said about letting the subject speak first in most cases. If a friend came up to you and said "I couldn't help but notice your bulge seems to be a little bigger than usual today; what are you thinking about?" would you feel a little put-off?
It really comes down to how well you know the person. If you know they're open and not too body-conscious, then it would be okay to initiate conversation about their boobs. Otherwise it would be best to allow them to mention it first, playing it off with a gentlemanly "Well, it's not like I'm checking you out or anything..." or whatever, just to put them at ease and reassure them that it's a "just friends" type conversation. I have some female friends who have no problem getting changed right in front of me, and others who would be considered by most to be prudes. Everybody's different, and each person has their own line that you shouldn't cross.
But anyway, stop with this male liberal guilt! Your female friends know that you're a man, and they also know that you're sensitive to their issues. You don't need to be an apologist. If they want to talk about something with you, they most likely will. This is the 21st century, and you are in a relatively progressive country. If there's something you've just been itching to say to some girl and aren't sure if you should bring it up, then don't. And don't get sore about it.
As for your last part about when others are around, I wouldn't start a conversation like that in another's presence. She might be okay talking to you about her boobs, but not the other people present.

If a VERY close friend indicates it's acceptable to talk about her boobs, then feel free to do so. Otherwise, don't. Full stop. The fact that YOU don't have a hang-up about it doesn't mean that it's going to be acceptable to all but a small minority of women (NB this may be different in Finland, where "your breasts are positively bursting with vibrancy today" may be the equivalent of "yours sincerely" or "hello", I dunno).

See also street harassment, Eliza Doolittle.
Kenan, a pH imbalance in the vagina can also lead to vaginitis or yeast infection. But hey, as long as such things have never negatively impacted your enjoyment of vaginas there must not be a problem, right? (Don't freak out, I'm just fucking with you, although you did illustrate another way in which male commentary on women's bodies can be unnecessary and unwelcome.)

I most definitely agree on this in general, being a feminist myself, but surely there's a difference between objectifying comments from random assholes (or assholes that you know) and non-sexist chatter between friends of different gender? I think only the most militant feminist would say men can't talk about women's bodies in any case, regardless of the actual content of said talk.

Here's an example: I'm out at a bar with a law school pal and at some point in the night he looks at my chest and tells me that my shirt makes my boobs look huge. Now this is completely unwelcome and innapropriate and I tell him so, to which he responds, "I'll bet you let Jeff tell you that your boobs look big!"
And I do, but that's because Jeff is MY HUSBAND. And unless there was enough alcohol involved that I don't remember it (which is possible), he's never made comments about my breasts while in public within earshot of our friends. And if he had, there was probably a fight later. But otherwise, of COURSE Jeff can tell me things about my boobs. I welcome such comments because they might lead to doing it.
Now I'm distracted. But I think I've made my point. Or I hope so because I'm late for work - the jist of it is that a reasonable rule of thumb (or boob) would be NOT to bring it up unless the woman initiates her body as a topic of conversation. Such as by waving her recently augmented tits in your face, for an excellent example.

1) Her tits are great.2) My g/f pointed it out at much greater length than I did.3) At that precise point, she needed a bloke to tell her that.
So, although I was definitely saying it from a sexist perspective, it's still (IMO) an order of magnitude less creepy than Tuomas in the Roxy example.

It has never happened, but I can imagine it would be, at the very least, awkward.
Or boobs in general?
I would find it tacky or infantile, depending upon the circumstance.
How well would you have to know him for it to be normal?
I don't think it would be normal for a male friend to discuss any of my body parts with me, save for perhaps, my hands. I think hands are fair game.
Is there some company where the subject shouldn't be raised?
Breast cancer sufferers or survivors, for example.

Oh, I have tons of body-awareness, but that doesn't stop me making fun of it. And I have female friends with a similar attitude towards the body, which leads to an occasional exchange of boob jokes or comparing of asses. However, I didn't mean to imply everyone should share this attitude. Since one's body-image is perhaps the most fragile part of many people's psyche, I wouldn't dare to apply the same standard to everyone.

Except that it's a pile of bullshit.
Dan OTM! I understand what is trying to be said there but for quite a lot of ppl that still doesn't make them "lose their eroticism." Depends wholly on the viewer, doesn't it?
FWIW I really don't care if my male friends discuss or compliment breasts but I can see why it'd be a rather daft thing to just bring up out of the blue; you'd have to actually know the person you're talking to pretty well and know that it is something that wouldn't offend them or take them off guard. It's not a conversation for random mixed-sex acquaintances. But this has already been said.
Also: THE WORD "BOOBS" IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME WANNA SLAP HALF OF YOU! Man, I hope you guys don't actually say "boobs" when talking about this stuff. Cos THAT is actually creepy.

I think people on this thread have been to quick to generalize from what I've said. Just because I think there are ways to talk about bodies that aren't sexist or offensive doesn't mean everyone has the right to talk about anyone's body. Of course personal integrity comes first.
In my own case I've noticed that treating body issues with humour alleviates them at least a bit. Like my example of the ass comparing contest: I don't think either one of us are happy with our bottoms, but making this issue into a joke helps to deal with it, at least it does so with me.

I think in some African cultures having bare breasts is the norm, but showing your legs is considered dirty. Usually it's the hidden, forbidden things that are titillating, and once they become everyday they stop being that. It's kinda like your mom's breasts, you've seen then enough so often they've become absolutely ordinary, and you probably don't even consider them breasts.

Nah, we normally try to be a little more grown-up. That's why we use "knockers" or "jugs".
Srsly though, I think the main reason most people on this thread are using "boobs" is because that was the word used in the question, and arguing about diction would have hindered the main discussion.

The Mary Kay woman who did my make-up at Honfest (bright blue eye shadow and pink lipstick) said that she could teach me their natural look at a later date. She said the point of it is that you do look better, but no one can tell why or what you did. I can't attest to this however, as I usually do just have the naturally natural look. Though I did see a schoolgirl on a Japanese train spend half an hour curling her eyelashes and applying make-up that had no discernable effect, though she did no look great, so perhaps I will defer in this, as in all matters, to the Japanese teenager.

You know girls, it's great to live in a democracy today, where freedom is everywhere. But girls, we often take this freedom for granted: freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of action. But you know gals, just because a bunch of men signed that Declaration Of Independence in 1776, doesn't mean that freedom was for men alone. Oh no, you take Tom Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Hancock - he's a helluva guy for you right there! All these men had wives. They probably had a few broads on the side too. These women wanted freedom just as much as their men did. But gals, I wonder, do we? I think it's time that we women thought about it a bit. Hell, I think it's time we did something about it. So come on, fellow females of the 20th century! Be glad that you're an American! Proclaim your freedom! Stand at attention! Pledge Allegiance! And...

Yeah same here esp since I've done a lot of research and studying on topics related to sexuality I just don't really see it as THAT taboo a subject. Generally I think I'm a pretty good judge of what is appropriate and when but I was at a bbq a couple years ago and related a really funny story to a bunch of ppl about friends of mine that had gone to a workshop on female ejaculation. A couple days later the host of the get together said I'd made quite an impression on the other guests who were a little shocked at my story. :-( I was pretty upset about it but in the end it's not my fault they were uptight idiots who couldn't appreciate a good story.

My friend and I came up with a method of measuring water displacement to determine breast volume in order to settle a dispute between some female friends. They had obviously different breast sizes, the opposite of what their bra sizes would indicate and the water displacement gave us good solid numbers to work with for size comparisons.

So of course I have now spent the last ten minutes trying to determine whether or not I have sideboobs as defined by Abbott and I can't figure it out so I'm going to assume that means that I do not. I once had a guy friend say I had awesome pointy 70's boobs. I told him I didn't think "pointy" was necessarily the word he was looking for so he switched to "perky" which I felt better about.

Okay if you aren't wearing an underwire bra do your boobs kind of get in the way of your upper arms? Mine do. (When I was going through puberty they kept going further & further to the sides & I had this totally Judy Blume fear they'd end up under my armpis by the time I'd fully 'developed'.)
― kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player (Abbott), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 18:58 (fourteen years ago) link
I disagree re sideboob -- pretty sure it's just the word for side cleavage/breast reveal in certain items of clothing that cut away under the arms! Not opposed to thinking up other usages, but I think Abbott is coining something new here.

Ooh, "swoop titty" is a good one. That silhouette is the precarious state, which probably lasts for about 15 minutes in one's early-to-mid 20s, of breasts being heavy enough to round out on the bottom (and have the accompanying ski-slope curve on top) without actually sagging even a tiny bit.
― But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:06 (fourteen years ago) link
Sci-fi illustrators of the era famously used the swoop titty silhouette on female figures but in a greatly enlarged version, which would be impossible to support in the correct form under Earth gravity. Must be all that space travel.

A 1952 article in Parents magazine (then called Parents’ Magazine), which offers the bizarre suggestion that one should periodically trace the silhouette of one's daughter's breasts (presumably unclothed) to gauge their development, also exhorts parents to get their girls training bras at the first sign of puberty lest the poor kids' breasts drop.

I'd suggest bras are primarily a tool of fashion: they give women an approximation of the idealized female shape plus some control over jiggle, cleavage, and nipple protrusion
^^ This is what I've always thought of them as although I do know some women with really big boobs that just feel more comfortable with a bra on.

Thanks, Uncle Cece!
Women's breasts, even small ones, clearly sag over time, and it's not hard to believe the steady tug of gravity on minimally supported tissue partly explains why. ... Conceivably a bra could delay the process. However, not to harp on this, we don't know it for a fact.
All this means is that no one has conducted/funded/published any scientific studies that PROVE bras prevent sagging. It doesn't mean that breasts don't sag on their own in a directly observable way, or that other parts of the body also lose elasticity and that protecting those areas from pulling or stress can lessen wrinkles and other effects of aging.

I'm sure I've posted this before but can't find it now but it is topical . . .
One of the most embarrassing moments of my life - When I was about 11 or so a friend and I decided to stuff our training bras with tissue and go to my parents' restaurant for lunch. Once we arrived I went into the kitchen to say hi to my dad. He took one look at me and in front of all the other chefs he poked me in the fake boob and said, "What the hell is that?". I nearly died but did learn that faking one's breast size is never really a good idea.

xp women sleep in bras? I've fallen asleep with my clothes on before, but I don't intentially wear a bra to bed. I can see it being no big thing if you don't have to wear ones with an underwire, but once underwires are required, I just don't see how that would be desirable.

LOL Laure - I remember when that book came out but I've never actually read it. I should though because I would probably love it and I think that you're right it probably was a very German thing to do. Here's another - between 6th and 7th grade I spent a month by myself in Germany visiting my grandmother. She took me to a public swimming pool one day and we got into this huge argument because she didn't understand why I didn't want to take my top off!

Boy I had no idea that I completely made up my definition of side boob. That's the reason I wear a bra, the damn things are just rubbing all over my arms all day otherwise. This is why I never got the point of 'lift & separate.' Lift I get, but thinking everyone else had the same thing as me, I wondered how/why one wld separate the things even further.
