so since i've been ill this week i started re-reading some GENIUS chris pike books. i dug into "the wicked heart" (which grossed me out a bit) and "monster" - WHY HAVENT THESE BEEN MADE into films!?

me and my sis decided we want christopher pike to me our third roommate!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

i cant remember if it was pike or one of those 'grown-up' r.l. stine novels but after general 6th grade snobbery at all of em i finally borrowed this book from my friend & read the whole thing sitting on the sidewalk after school one day - i got seriously, seriously fucked up by the part where the girl who switches bodies w/ her best friend (by jumping across a creek bed?!?) cuts off the head of her bf & it makes the RRRRIP sound of 'tattered velcro'

,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Friday, 17 March 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

my sister read all of these

gbx (skowly), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

omg i haven't thought about these in at least a decade

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

My favorite was one about a girl who wakes up in a world where only her and a few others exist, and someone's killing them off one by one and then it turns out she's really having an abortion or something. He had a few that were

There was a trilogy about some killers in a high school? Something equally trippy as the first.

Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine were awesome! At the time I was reading them all I even wrote a couple of stories that really ripped off their writing style -- I was such a hack. I wish I still had those stories, though.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Friday, 17 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

has anybody seen the summer camp episode of the goosebumps tv series?? it gets cartoon ridiculous halfway thru (its a 2-parter) but the first half where the quietly sadistic counselors are refusing treatment for snake bites & other injured kids are just disappearing ('what happened to jake?' 'his parents came to pick him up' 'i didnt see their car!') is some of the most disturbing tv ive ever seen

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Friday, 17 March 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

He had stuff out in the 80s! Kid today...

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Was there one where people were at a cabin in the woods and people got trapped outside in the cold and someone had to pee on his/her own hands in order to be able to make it back to the cabin?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

You don't want to piss me off, my walker is made out of titanium.

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

How readable are these after you hit puberty? Pike always seemed better than Stine because he occasionally alluded to drugs and sex and debauchery (all of which were summarily punished with a gruesome death from beyond, of course), which was a big selling point in my adolescence. Looking at some of these titles and his themes, he was kind of like a pre-teen Lovecraft (political bent included).

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

After I discovered John Bellairs, there was no room in my life for Christopher Pike.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

okay please do not TARNISH the memory of C.P. with that HACK R.L. STINE!!!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Chris Pike is still totally readable!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I never actually read these during my dorkling years. Was the point of these where some read like Judy Blume-style "controversial" teenager subject matter only with horror trappings? Or am I thinking of another series?

kingfish da notorious teletabby (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I never read Judy Blume, so I don't know?

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

there was sex and drugs, so maybe!

can I recommend THE LOST MIND? its a LABRYINTH OF MYSTERY!!!!!!!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

also, attention -- ladies... christopher pike is single!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

How did I never read these books?! I was too busy reading every single Lois Duncan book perhaps. Whisper of Death looks awesome.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

love him. STILL. plus those covers !!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Somehow I knew this would be a Mandee thread! Pike was THE SHIT when I was about 7th grade age.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

hahaha no offense nicole but for some reason i thought you were wayyy too old to have read this stuff back in the day

If it makes you feel any better, Ethan, I was thinking the same thing. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Man. Next library sale, I am going to rack up on these things. And Stine, too.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Didn't anyone else read John Bellairs? The covers usually had an Edward Gorey illustration?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

They were slightly classier than Pike, but still kiddie horror.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Bellairs and Pike aren't even in the same class - Bellairs was actually good, and not at all kitschy (as Pike now looks to me) and moralistic.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

SNOB!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather read Pike, but Bellairs was awesome.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

better.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

damn, i've read whispers of death. isn't that the one about abortion?

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

the EVILS OF abortion, yes.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

that's the one

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I really thought he was a genius when I was younger. What about ROAD TO NOWHERE? ? The one where the girl picks up the HIPPIE hitch hikers (not really, but they were named POPPY CORN AND FREEDOM JACK), but it turns out she was just DYING IN HER BATHTUB the whole time??? GOOD. I also remember she ate junior mints throughout the entire story.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

tell me more about this abortion one

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

xp: I remember that one, but I forget the big moral - was she a suicide?

abortion one - girl and boyfriend go to get abortion, she backs out, they come back to town and discover they're the only ones alive along with three other kids, they start getting killed off by a storytelling girl who committed suicide before, first girl somehow ends up back in abortion clinic bleeding out, she can choose to live (and relive the recent events/deaths/etc.) or choose death (thus sparing her friends?). Then something else happens with the boyfriend I don't remember.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

okay here's a plot summary of the abortion one:

WHISPER OF DEATH is about a REBELLIOUS REDHEAD named ROXANNE (AKA 'ROX'). She meets a boy named PEPPER. They do it in a corn field. Or a haystack. Something. She totally gets preggers! THey live in a tiny little grodey town in Utah, so they decide to drive to the next town over so she can get an Abortion. On the drive over, Roxanne remembers this GIRL they went to school with named MARY SUE or something that was a real creep. Like, she was a bit mystical? She wore a cape I think. Basically, she was goth. Rox gets shaken and doesn't do the abortion but doesn't tell her boyfriend. When they get back to town they find it ABANDONED! But there are a few people from their highschool who are still hanging around. Funny shit starts going down... like, people die. It turns out it's her dead baby seeking revenge.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

So was there one where people were trapped in a cabin and someone peed on his/her own hands in order to survive? Was that a Pike knockoff?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

hahaha i cant remember that one, amanda

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Good summary, Mand!! ! ! ! But I thought Betty Sue was using magic tricks on them or something? MAN, I need to reread this ASAP. I'm gonna go do it in public. I have it right here, everybody. JEALOUS???

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I always liked MONSTER because the main character was always eating big macs and it made me hungry.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I remember one about a girl who went on a spaceship to the end of the universe and experienced some weird time-space thing and a lot of crazy stuff happened but at the end she reached Nirvana.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

They do it in a corn field.

Fuck, I totally read this!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I think Rox and Pepper do it in his FAMILY BARN. Because she almost sits on a RAKE and they get all freaked out.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

i totally want to read one now. so yes, i am JEALOUS!

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry. I would share if I could!!!!!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

not a CP book, yet horror-like:

the Computer That Ate My Brother

I'm sad that I can't find the book cover for this.

kingfish da notorious teletabby (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

i love this thread, it makes me laugh

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I was also always jealous of the OUTFITS the girls wore on the covers!!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Do you remember the moment when you realized that the books all had the same basic plot?

Establish plot
someone dies
instill fear in everyone else
someone else dies
wrap up

Like Scooby Doo.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

oh i hate it when he got into his SPACE PHASE in the early 90's :(

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I was definitely too old for that. I only remember teenagers getting killed.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

what about his PYROMANIAC phase??? Or I guess he just had one book about a guy who just LOVED FIRE.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

kelly, it wasnt a rake! it was one of those things that KING TRITON carries - what is that?? FARMERST TO THREAD

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

a SCYTHE??? DEATH'S THANG?

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

oh and also, did anybody notice that the villains were always OTHER TEENS? Never were any creepy adults involved. That I can remember, anyway.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

a pitchfork?

also, this may have been a Stine, but there was one about a girl who had red hair and was popular and beautiful -- she put on lipstick once only to discover that her mouth was bleeding -- someone had INSERTED A NEEDLE, POINT UP, INTO HER LIPSTICK!!!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

whoa!!! i dont remember that. Maybe it was a Fear Street. SOUNDS SCARY though! !

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

i remember being able to read these in one day. two, tops. me and a friend would watch for their release and all that.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah I remember going to WALDENBOOKS all the time in search of a FRESH christopher pike.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

that sounds like something Pike would put into his thrillers, though!

maybe it was that DEADLY FRIEND series or something, that I never read?

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

found!! it was Stine.\, and yeah, it WAS Fear St.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

love it. I can't even STAND to look at the new ones! They can go jump off a bridge.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

we need to start a club, RIGHT NOW.

i agree, no new ones.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

it was one of those things that KING TRITON carries - what is that??

I think it's called a trident.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

if in a barn, probably a pitchfork is the closest thing to a trident, surely?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

that makes sense. the pitchfork thing, not trident.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

i have a confession to make.

i never read "master of murder" !!!!!!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

hah i dont know why i couldnt think of PITCHFORK!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

well I still have most of my collection from when I was younger. I bet you could buy them IN BULK on EBAY. I would never say no to a christopher pike book club. Actually, I wouldnt mind reading TONS of young adult HORROR NOVELS like.

The Point Horror Generator is ALWAYS a treat: http://www.thegeekhost.com/helenne/horror.html

For Example:

Mandee was having a happy normal day in Cool School. She had lunch with her best friends Kelly and Roxymuzak, and completed her work for Mr. Bundles. It was all going wonderfully, until she discovered ghosts in her locker - she had a terrible fear of them, and wondered who could do such a cruel thing.

'I bet it was Martika,' said Kelly. 'She's been jealous of you since she heard that you were going to the St. Patrick's Day BALL with MILES.' Mandee sighed.

'Did you read the The Cool TIMES?' said Roxymuzak. 'There was an article about Carl Buddig, who shocked everyone when he/she ... wore the same outfit twice.'

'Really?' said Mandee. 'Can I read the article?'

Roxymuzak gave it to her.

The The Cool TIMES has heard rumors that Carl Buddig is back after the shock of many years ago when he/she ... wore the same outfit twice. This is not true. Carl Buddig is in Cairo.

Mandee scanned the article and was startled to discover that she and Carl Buddig were alike - they ... both have matching bowl cuts.

Mandee walked home feeling very troubled. When she got home, there was a note on her doorstep. She opened in and screamed. It was full of ghosts. There was also a letter.

To Mandee. Watch your step. Ha ha ha. Signed, Carl Buddig.

Who could it be? Was it really Carl Buddig or someone closer to her? Mandee suspected everyone - Martika of course, who always sneered at her. MILES, even though he was the dreamiest boy in Cool School. She even suspected Roxymuzak who had a great love for ghosts and had been acting strangely recently. The only person she could trust was Kelly who had been her friend since they were small children.

The night before the St. Patrick's Day BALL, Mandee went with Kelly to the pizza parlor, and they discovered it was empty. Mandee was pleased to have Kelly with her, because she was very nervous about Carl Buddig, as well as avoiding MILES, Roxymuzak, and Martika. 'Isn't it strange,' said Kelly. 'How much we have in common?'

Mandee remembered that they ... both have matching bowl cuts. She became uneasy. 'Kelly, don't you have family in Cairo?'

Kelly laughed manically. She threw some ghosts at Mandee, then attacked her with a parmesan cheese, and Mandee was forced to fight back with a gingham tablecloth. She ran away and was found by MILES and Roxymuzak, who had a perfectly rational explanation for her strange behaviour.

'We came to save you from Kelly,' said Roxymuzak.

The next day they discovered that Kelly had died horribly. Mandee was sad - Kelly had been her friend for years, and becoming a crazed psycho in the space of a few days could happen to anyone. But she placed her trauma firmly behind her and went to the St. Patrick's Day BALL with MILES, much to the dismay of Martika.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

i am checking to see if my library has these books

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

wow, kelly remember the day when we discovered carl budding was not 'budding' but 'buddig'?? it was like a friend had died

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

:(

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

well i'm gonna start with Whisper of Death.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

you guys are so cool. :( i wish we could all hang out.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

i kinda wish Dustin B. and Max J. would do their own version of THE POINT HORROR

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

a real christopher pike book club would be perfect. we could eat chinese takeout and talk about whether rox and pepper did the right thing and then after getting bored with that we could listen to records or talk about how fear street compares! !

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

my choices at the library are slim:

1. MAGIC FIRE
2. INVASION OF THE NO-ONES
3. TIME TERROR
4. THE DANGEROUS QUEST
5. MASTER OF MURDER
6. GIMME A KISS
7. THE GRAVE
8. WITCH
9. THE HAUNTED CAVE

which one should i go for first?

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

"gimme a kiss" - OH THAT ONE IS CHOICE!! wait, is it the one about the COMPUTER GAME and the dude, and the other time traveling dude? er....

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, they don't have very many. that's very very disappointing!!!!!!!! half of those I havent even heard of. I guess go with WITCH or MASTER of MURDER or GIMME A KISS because I know those are older and the rest must be newer. Although my oldest sister told me that THE GRAVE is kinda good, even though I never read it.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA, this thread is making me laugh. out loud!

i don't remember, but i'll go with it. and you'd better believe this thread will be revived when i'm done with it.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

the haunted cave seems so mild. like it could've been written by mark twain.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

MANDEE YOU ARE THINKING OF SEE YOU LATER!!!!!!! A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BOOK. GOOD THOUGH!!!!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

haha MARK TWAIN. I will ask here, because I'm dying to know and ask everybody, does anyone remember some weird CLAYMATION movie involving MARK TWAIN and like.... THE GATES OF HEAVEN???? I have this very fuzzy memory that involves a movie about this and I AM SIMPLY DYING to know what it is!! !

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

oh I found it: http://imdb.com/title/tt0088678/

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

sorry to stray from the topic at hand -- chrius.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

oh wait a sec.

"gimme a kiss" was CLEARLY Chris Pike's BRAINCHILD before "Fall into Darkness" - they have nearly the identical plot except of course "Fall into Darkness" is his masterpiece. "Gimme a Kiss" ain't that great. I have a copy at home and I've avoided it for years.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:17 (twenty years ago)

hey kell - you have wondered about that mark twain movie for like 15 years yet it took you less than 5 minutes to find out the answer? WHAT A DORK

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

HAHA I KNOW. Well I always think about it for like 10 SECONDS when I'm not at a computer and I've never thought to try and FIND OUT. It's just like some mystery I've never tried to crack. WAS PRETTY EASY, HUH. Plus I never thought it was just ABOUT MARK TWAIN and would have that in the title! ! ! I thought he was like ONE element to this complicated plot. Apparently not!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:20 (twenty years ago)

that is weird! claymation + mark twain = huh

you know, i'll just go with something other than "gimme a kiss". that sounds kinda creepy anyway. because i don't envision it in a romantic way.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

here's a movie I always wondered about: it's about a SEXY TEENAGED ALIEN and her little SISTER alien plus some weird ALIEN PET of theirs who is like one leg with a furry eyeball who come to some ranch in Montana and cause a ruckus! Anyway both the alien girls had purple hair.. thats all I remember, really. OH and that the furry eyeball/leg combo befriends someone's grandpa.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

i loved loved the Final Friends series and Remember Me. Those books were so messed up.

EATADICK.COM (Carey), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

this is the only thread i've participated in so much

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

i actually never read the FINAL FRIENDS series. I recently reread REMEMBER ME and did you know they fly in that book??? Also recently realized that the sexy hot cheerleaders always end up with the kinda computer nerd. DO you think CHRIUS was fantasizing a little bit???

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

haha i totally read silent night - it had some creepy mall loading dock scenes i always think of when i see the back of a mall

did anybody else read bruce coville!?!? 'my teacher is an alien' series & the other one where all the child prodigies go the island for uh science stuff

,,,,,,,,,,,,, Friday, 17 March 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

OMG kelly we had taped that Mark Twain claymation thing off Disney channel and I used to watch it all the time! It involved Adam & Eve. My favorite Christopher Pike was the one where they were doing the school play and the kids kept dying for real onstage. It was awesome. I also liked Remember Me.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I just remember all the Choose Your Own Adventure/Time Machine/Be An Interplanetary Spy! from this era.

And those Apple Paperbacks(TM), which you knew were special wot with the little Scholastic Apple thing on the spine. A grade school version of Vintage Contemporaries, if you will.

kingfish da notorious teletabby (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 17 March 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

OMG this thread has awakened so many memories!

As a kid my favorite was The Immortal, about a girl who goes to Greece and she finds a little ancient figurine, I think? And she either has a vision of a goddess/thinks she's a goddess or something? The only things I remember with real clarity are all the times she talked about needing condoms so she could have sex with hot Greek guys on the beach, and her friend putting powdered glass in her hamburger so she would DIE FROM A MILLION TINY INTERNAL CUTS! That was awesome.

I think the most fucked-up book was the one about the guy who would look for angelic-looking blonde girls, then smash in their skulls with a hammer while they slept. Wasn't he being controlled by some spirit out in the desert or something? I forget what it was called.

R.L. Stine was all I read in 3rd and 4th grade...Fear Street was awesome, as was THE BABYSITTER series (though I'm pretty sure it went downhill after the first one) and THE CHEERLEADER series. My favorite, though, was the Fear Street Seniors series, where it followed a high school class through their senior year. A few people died each book, and it was awesome. The beginning had the yearbook, and it would put an X through each photo after they died. Man, those books are awesome, and I still have those...I have some Pike stuff, too...I remember reading CHAIN LETTER..

did anybody else read bruce coville!?!? 'my teacher is an alien' series & the other one where all the child prodigies go the island for uh science stuff

the titles of those coville books got better and better as the series went on - "my teacher fried my brains," "my teacher glows in the dark," "my teacher flunked the planet," etc etc. i wish he was still writing them and coming up with those titles.

haha according to amazon he's now writing books with names like "into the land of the unicorns."

one month passes...
I feel like my life might turn into a Christopher Pike book. In the last two days, two (2!!) teachers have died at the community college where I teach. My class is tomorrow. We're supposed to have a "staff meeting" at 11.

Should I be scared?

Seriously, my life could be in danger here. What if there is a coven of teenage pagans in the basement by the cafeteria? What if everyone who WORKS in the cafeteria is part of the pagan cult and they're gearing up for their May Day sacrifice? WHAT IF?

The Milkmaid is concerned about losing her life to pagan teenagers (The Milkmaid, Friday, 21 April 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

you might want to consult your local seer - maybe carry some dragon feathers in yr pocket, just in case.

i think you should investigate. it's probably some hot girl in one of your classes. what if you're next?

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

WHAT IF? There's a girl with a rather prominent mustache. Should I suspect her? Could it be the quiet Russian woman who is obsessed with human cloning?

If I'm still alive on Monday, I'll post to let you know. In the meantime, you better believe I'm going to do some amateur sleuthing.

No, it's the male student who no ones knows has escaped from a mental hospital and is harboring a crush on you.

You mean THE NEW GUY? The mysterious Macedonian dude who only showed up once?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I did think it was weird that Leonid only showed up once halfway through the semester and then never came back. I hope I don't see him in the basement after the staff meeting.

this thread brought back some memories, especially of this story that was published in an anthology called "13 Tales of Terror." the Pike story had two parts, and was called 'Dark Walker.' it was about a new boy in town who gives a weird song on a tape to this girl at a crazy teenage juke-joint, and then weird shit happens-- she crashes her car, maybe kills her best friend? the song keeps playing out of nowhere as if it was on the wind, and the boy keeps on calling her and asking if she liked the tape, and it is very strange and weirdly affecting. reminds me a bit of this Dean Koontz novel i probably read at around the same time called "Hideaway," only much more menacing and Twin Peaks-esque rather than Jeff Goldblum steez.

what's up y'all
still here. the macedonian guy didn't kill me, nor did the mustached girl. the deaths at the community college ceased for a while, started up again, and then one teacher was found dead in his apartment approximately three days after he died. everyone felt really bad about that one.

also "fall into darkness" is on lifetime quite a bit. i saw it, but remember little.
