Boulder the "most liberal city" in Colorado?

Yet another article about Boulder
that makes it sound pretty pent-up and weird.

Right after someone in this thread stated that Boulder would be the most liberal city in Vermont if it were there. Hmm.

Richard K (Richard K), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I work in Boulder. It is just weird, not much else but that.

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

It is mostly just weird, agreed.

A visiting, very lefty law professor of mine from Eugene, living in Boulder for the year, proclaimed Boulder to be a miserable fraud, mostly just a bunch of smug very rich liberals with the luxury of opinions that they can afford. I do think that the city just outsources is sprawl to Louisville and Longmont. But then, I guess people have to live somewhere, and if they packed more folks into Boulder property values might drop. Nonetheless, the traffic in town really sucks bad.

Compared to the Springs, Boulder is communist.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Compared to the Spring, Alabama is pro-gay.

Hunter OTM. I hate driving here in the morning. My co-workers say, "But why not just move closer?" Fuck no, I ain't living in Boulder.

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay so i was exaggerating about boulder being the most liberal city in vermont in the other thread. but let's see what we have in boulder:

2 types of college students: those who are there to study, and those who are there to ski. and rock climb. and drink inordinate amounts of alcohol. mostly liberal, although i'm not sure how many of them come from places in colorado that aren't boulder or denver.

ex-hippies: lived in boulder back in the day, are either raising their kids now to be liberal, or have already done that and seen them off to college or wherever at which point they cease being ex-hippies and start simply being hippies again.

exceedingly rich people: who knows their political viewpoint.

the thing is, maybe boulderites think of their city as being really liberal because the 3 conservatives who write in to the paper every day tell us we are. but i don't think in my 15 years of living there i ever actually encountered and talked to one conservative expressing their views openly. and hey, at least it's not the Springs.

liberal city FITE!!!!!!

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I got the impression there were also lots of hippie students there thanks to Naropa. Although this may've been the people I hung out with, who used to complain that their classmates would get up and leave the room like zombies if a drum circle started during a class session.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

the whole Naropa thing is funny. Boulder has the secondmost number of buddhists in any city North America (Halifax being the first), many of whom are some pretty bottom-rung hippies. you wouldn't want to meet these people for lunch. they can't talk about things in normal terms - they think every word they say has at least three meanings, and thus, everything is really deep. However, the founder of Naropa, Chögyam Trungpa (the person who is pretty much solely responsible for bringing Tibetan Buddhism to North America) wouldn't come across like that at all. he was probably one of the least hippie-ish people imaginable.

Needless to say, being a buddhist from Boulder, i do think that there are a lot of very clear minded buddhists and Naropa students who really can't be grouped into any category. i know quite a few and would hate to see them pigeonholed because some idiots are busy Traversing the Spiritual Plane.

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I read the other day about some musician chick who commuted daily to Naropa by bike. From Ned! If she rode it both ways, she had to be pretty fucking fit.

I keep imagining some hippie girl riding up Magnolia with a guitar on her back.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't even imagine riding up magnolia on a bike, but there have to be people in boulder who do. i bet those people could also do be like this guy

That guy can do be pretty well!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Needless to say, being a buddhist from Boulder, i do think that there are a lot of very clear minded buddhists and Naropa students who really can't be grouped into any category.

I didn't mean to pigeonhole anyone, I should say also I liked the atmosphere when I'd visit the campus occasionally, since it reminded me of my undergrad college, a place that also had a visible (but by no means majority) hippie-kid presence.

I think my friends were making fun of a very visible group of people who seemed to put their hippie cred above anything else they might do, and with my lack of knowledge about Naropa/Boulder I didn't know if my friends (former students) were the exception or the rule.

Which is all to reiterate that my impression above is only an impression. I used to notice a lot of prayer flags whenever I'd walk around my neighborhood in Denver, many more so than in any other US city I've ever lived in. Do you know what the buddhist pop. in Denver is?

Wow, I was just in Boulder last week. First time I've ever visited the area (or Colorado for that matter.) I had a blast! Nice town. The weather was fantastic. We wore T-shirts and hiked up the .. what is it called, "Royal Arch"? I think that's the name. It was amazing. Saw John Cale play at the Boulder Theater, he was pretty entertaining. Pretty good food, too. There is one hell of a kick-ass happy-hour place there on that pedestrian mall area (Pearl Street, is that it?) can't remember what it's called now. I really liked the town (and Denver as well)

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I once went to a bar in Boulder that was mostly non-smoking except for a glassed-in section in the middle. It was as if the smokers were in a fish tank. Some of the people I was with pointed at them and tapped on the glass, but I tried to refrain. Instead I watched a lot of people play pool and talked small-talk to some girls about making jewelry.

...and I agree with Mandee on that one.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

lemin -- yup, that's the one! I remember cuz the people sitting outside had the fondue plate. But yeah, 1/2 off draft beers and everything on the raw bar for two hours?? That's insane. We ate like kings. The prevalence of all the micro-brews is a big big point in the area's favor, lemme tellya.

I loved Denver too. What a nice town.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

haha you're probably right. i'd much rather tell people i'm from denver than boulder. too bad it's too well known a city for me to just pass it off as being "near denver"

I was disappointed to learn that that Milennium Bridge was not by Calatrava, just someone ripping him off. Looks nice though. That whole area -- that's "LoDo", right? -- is really cool.

Mark occasionally says he misses Denver, and when I ask him why, he always says something about "the vibe." I find this endearing, but I might not call what I miss about Denver a vibe.

I went to the Denver Art Museum last weekend, and looked over the new expansion program - (www.denverartmuseum.org) -- really, the best part of the entire museum was the "guest book" that people could sign and say what they thought of the new expansion program. Pretty much everyone agreed it looks hideous. Some people even drew some evil clowns.

Sgs, I kinda feel the Denver vibe, and I

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

How come my message was cut off? This is nuts.

Anyhow what I was saying is that I really like Denver now, and I feel like it's a pretty cool place, but when people visit I start to feel self-conscious about it, like it's not as RADICAL as I originally thought. I definitely like it here better than I did when I lived here before (February of 2003 through September 2003).

Although Lost Lake is going to be no more in 2 months time which is going to make Denver 100x lamer.

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:32 (nineteen years ago) link

is lost lake's population dispersing to other environs? I miss warehouse-type parties. Denver was the only place I ever went to stuff like that.

I was sad to leave, there were things about it I really loved, people and my 'hood, but the suckassness of DU and how much I hated teaching cast an unfortunate pall over my time, especially after I'd spent so much effort moving there. I still think it's a pretty cool place though, it felt like half-town, half-city sometimes, with mostly the good parts of each. As in, there are plenty of good and great things but it's as if you have to know to look for them in a way, they're not on display as much as they are in a larger city.

I'd like to visit there again. I didn't do as much as I could've there--didn't go to the art museum, or any museums really, which is nuts 'cuz I heart museums. It must've been a weird time in my life.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, lost lake's population is dispersing... they have a problem with break-ins (Mike's car has been stolen, then he got it back, and it's been broken into 4 times since then). Last weekend three cars were broken into. I think they've just had enough.

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

yeargh! no wonder.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't catch any frat-boy vibe in Denver but then again I was only there for two nights. I dunno. I've lived in Chicago for the last 14 years and if I ever thought about moving, I could definitely see that area next on the list. I don't need it to be RADICAL. I'm too old for RADICAL anyway. I just want to like, sip microbrews and hike in the Rocky Mountain National forest. Oh, I forgot to mention we went up to Estes Park and saw elk and bighorns too! Awesome.

Have any of y'all been to that restaurant up the mountain outside Boulder? the Flagstaff Inn I guess it's called? We were on too tight a budget and too underdressed but it looked cool.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Stormy Davis, I am pretty poor and never go to nice restaurants.

:(

Denver is probably a bit more expensive than Chicago, but not much more.

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, flagstaff. sooooooooo expensive. i'm thinking most people in boulder have maybe been there once at most.

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:57 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, well, like I say, we weren't in a position to go eat there either.

It's funny -- I've heard people say it's expensive to live there but it didn't seem too bad in general. Or are you talking rent? I meant to check out housing prices there but didn't get around to it. I didn't really get the traffic thing either ... at least, Boulder seems almost too small to really have a bad traffic problem, no? Maybe we weren't driving at peak times though. The buses seemed to come by really frequently.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Boulder was not what I thought it would be, when I visited. Naropa more or less was.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I found Denver to be way less expensive than Chicago in terms of rent and heating bills. I lived in a beautiful $550/month apartment (affordable at the time) by myself. I don't think I would've found an equally nice place in a similar neighborhood for that money in Chicago--I had a great apartment there too, in Lincoln Square (comparable to my Denver 'hood) close to the El, and 2 roommates. And then there was the winter of the $350 monthly heating bill, ugh. Then again, my heat/hot water was included in my Denver rent. But the phone service sucks in Denver. Anyway, Denver was more of a bargain in my experience, but you pretty much have to have a car to get around.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

(And I definitely experienced a frat-boy vibe around DU--I think some crazy majority of the students are involved in Greek life in some way.)

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Rent way out here in the burbs of Chicago is over $550/month now. My sister paid around $900 for a decent-sized 1BR in the city proper.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Microbrews seconded. The beer in Boulder is really tasty; I still dream about a really hoppy raspberry wheat beer that I had on Pearl Street somewhere, and I don't even like fruity beers. Good beer is a bastion of liberalism, don't you know?

Last time I was there, aside from driving through, (which was uh 1996, to visit some friends at the University) there seemed to be a disproportionate number of young "liberal" well-to-do post-hippie Phishheads in SUVs (before SUVs were SUVs, actually) that appeared to be taking narcisism to a new level. But, indeed, this is probably a stereotype.

I have a friend who lives near Boulder that I visit now and again and he lives an idyllic life up in the mountains. I'm jealous about that.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm basing the Chicago/Denver cost of living thing on this online cost of living calculator thingie that said my salary could decrease by $3,500 in order to keep the same standard of living in Chicago.

My rent is pretty damn cheap. I think it's a renter's market here. To buy a house is pretty ridiculous, but I think that's pretty much everywhere. I pay $475 all utilities included for a washington park 1-bedroom (it's tiny, though). Groceries are the only thing that seem overpriced to me.

Boulder is far more expensive compared to Denver. I think most one bedroom apartments are $700-1000 where they are probably $450-900 in Denver (depending on neighborhood and etc.)

yeah, beer coming out of Boulder (and colorado in general, excepting Coors of course) is generally pretty good. Fat Tire is from around there, and the Walnut Brewery ones are quality as well.

in other news, thank fucking god Pete Coors didn't get elected to Senate, though there's a running bet going on in my family on how long it'll take Salazar to switch sides.

three years pass...

So, I'm going to be in Boulder for a summer internship. A friend of mine who grew up in Denver says that Boulder is sort of a hippie town. I'm prepared for that, though, I think. It's all about what kind of hippie town it is. I'm in Ithaca right now, which leans toward the burnt out hippie side. As long as Boulder isn't full of people stumbling in and out of the bong shop, staring distantly and muttering things at my shoes, it should be alright.

Every third craig's list post in the subleasing section goes out of its way to mention that they are "420 friendly".

one month passes...

I'm in Boulder now.

I'm in a kind of crazy living situation. I'm living with other guy, but he's best friends with all of his neighbors, and they've knocked down the fences in their backyards so it's like an open community area. I have been smoked up like fifty times since I got here yesterday, and have been offered a margarita by a stranger not once but twice.

The roommate and his friends are nice, but they probably think I'm a weirdo. I played them the Santana Shredz video, and they didn't think it was that funny. Then one of them was like "Why don't we watch a REAL Santana song?" and before I knew it we were watching Santana live at Woodstock 1969. Admittedly, that Woodstock footage was pretty cool. But the thing is, they weren't looking for woodstock footage. They were looking for ANY Santana footage. And I'm already getting really sick of listening to Sublime. They're still cool dudes though. My roommate says "Yeah, right?" anytime he agrees with someone else, which is endearing.

Anyway, Mandee (or anyone else in Boulder) send me an email if you want.

i think a lot of colorado was amazing in the 60s-70s. e.g. Aspen, when Hunter was running for sheriff.

gbx, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

In response to the original thread question: I lived in Boulder for a time and yeah, like others have noted above, how liberal can a place actually be when it is largely a haven for the super-rich? Like Ann Arbor, another town in which I have lived, there is plenty of leftist hand-wringing being performed over California Sirah and expensive vegetarian cuisine, but I imagine there is also a lot of secret appreciation for capital gains tax cuts and supercheap Mexican labor. Also, at least as of the late 90's, about 70% of those same people commuted to Denver every day in gigantic SUVs. Everyone else seemed to own a Saab, for some reason.

Ann Arbor and Boulder are a far cry from the hotbeds of anti-establishment activism they were before Reaganism set in, yet both towns somehow maintain that illusion. In both cities, people are far too comfortable to be genuinely pissed off at corporate culture.

Seasonal tourists excepted, the real "most liberal city" in Colorado is probably some hippy mountain utopia like Telluride or Crested Butte.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Telluride is Aspen v.2.0 and heaving with rich folk. Crested Butte is a main drag with a pizza place that serves 40s and many dirty bros.

Durango is probably more "liberal" than either of them. But fuck it, I just want to move to Marble or Silverton.

gbx, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link

there is plenty of leftist hand-wringing being performed over California Sirah

Syrah? Petite Sirah? neither is close to CA's most notable grape.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Durango is probably more "liberal" than either of them - Oops. I meant Durango, not Crested Butte. I've never been to Crested Butte. Regarding the Telluride/Aspen thing: that's really too bad, though not surprising at all. I haven't been there in over ten years, but at the time it was a comfortable change of pace from the increasingly upscale and homogenized environs of the Vail/Summit County towns. I suppose its co-option was inevitable. I have purposely avoided Aspen, but I'm sure it has changed drastically from the days when Hunter Thompson was elected Sheriff (or very nearly elected - I forget).

Syrah? Petite Sirah? neither is close to CA's most notable grape. - OK, youve got me. I was referring to Petite Sirah, as it is generally pretty expensive, but you are welcome to subsitute that with any California red you feel to be more appropriate.

the great thing about 'catch and release' is it made the people of boulder seem so horrible that it surely could stop anyone from moving here if, of course, more than 8 people had seen it.

keythkeyth, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 05:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Boulder has really good beer though.

I also liked the Sundown Saloon when I lived there.

The place can get really depressing though. Everyone really is a mountain climbing gearhead with bad taste in music. Also, there is very little grasp of sarcasm in that town. Everyone is just so "sincere" about everything, unless they are some rich college kid.

I lived there in 2004-2005. My landlord, who lived next door, would routinely come by and leave pro-Kerry stuff on our front porch. You'll find that despite the illusion that Boulder is a friendly and accepting town, most of the people are quite rude. I moved there from Virginia, driving an old Jeep Cherokee. I was routinely derided for this, and generally assumed to be a republican.

Hey ZS, Albertson's (here, anyway) has a sale: buy 3 boxes of general mills cereal & get a gallon of milk free.

Abbott, Sunday, 1 June 2008 01:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, and it's $5 for the three boxes (plus the free milk).

Abbott, Sunday, 1 June 2008 01:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Whoa, nice!

The odds of me getting there are not so good, though. Technically it's within biking distance from where I'm at, but I wouldn't be able to carry back much more than the 3 boxes of cereal and gallon of milk. Plus the guy I'm staying with appears to be emotionally attached to King Sooper's.

I caught a bunch of shit when I got here about not knowing what King Sooper's was.

Although one guy did say "Dude, you can't say ...."currency" and...uh...."fecal matter" at night, those are daytime words. Normally I would understand, but..." after I said something like "but 80% of currency has fecal matter on it anyway, right?" in a conversation tangentially related to how dirty beer pong is (due to the missed throws hitting the table, floor, dirt etc).

Z S, Sunday, 1 June 2008 04:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I know no one cares, but I have to say,

There are two dudes I barely know hanging out in my weed stenched living room. They just kind of hang out here. All the time. One of them, on the left, was described to me as "just like Kramer" before I ever met him. He's like Kramer in that he always walks in uninvited and is just kind of...there...he's unlike Kramer in that he's never funny, ever. He's has also told me that he has a crush on a 16-year-old girl and the girl's mother, and that girls are best when they're "on the edge of the range" like that.

The other guy, he seemed pretty good natured the first few times I met him, but now, as he lays all over one of the couches, I realize that I'm almost certain he has had his hand down his gym shorts for like half an hour. Not really scratching or jerking it or whatever, but just down in there. Like Al Bundy but way further down. I don't know what to say anymore. What the fuck is wrong with this town?

I don't know what the hell is going on here. I'm in Boulder, CO living with halfassed stoner (they only smoke spliffs, WTF) college kids - and somehow I'm sitting on a couch arguing with this kid that says China is 50 miles off the coast of Florida, drilling diagonally toward the U.S., drilling our oil. I understand what he's saying, it's a false rumor Cheney helped spread a few days ago, but when I explain what's actually is going on his eyes glaze toward the tv and no one responds. We're all watching some sort of extreme wrestling thing where one fighter is jabbing his elbow into the other guys temple, repeatedly, and they're both covered with blood. Nooooooo

nabisco, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

That's the thing though, I spend nearly all of my free time either up in the trails in the mountains or at a coffeeshop called the Laughing Goat. But I can't spend ALL of my time away from home. I still have to come back to eat, and then hang out until I'm finally tired enough to go to bed. I can't make enemies of these fools because they're all I've got. If I get antagonistic with them I will literally have no friends. And I don't have a car, so I need someone to take me to get groceries.

Z S, Thursday, 19 June 2008 00:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Occasionally I come across someone who isn't completely braindead and I want to hold onto their leg and say "Please talk to me. Can we please drink wine and talk about something? Anything?". But I doubt that's socially acceptable.

Z S, Thursday, 19 June 2008 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Ah, well that's cool-- it sounds like you are making some wise use of your time! But I understand what you're saying...

I doubt that's socially acceptable

Yeah, but it's probably worth trying some variation of that! I would. Seriously.

Abbott, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

So far, I've adopted the strategy of hoping that someone at the coffeeshop will notice that I am always browsing interesting and hilarious websites, and think I'm cool and talk to me. And that they wouldn't be crazy.

"New lows reached at Boulder coffeeshop - no one notices"

i don't think i've ever posted on this board (i'm more of an ILM guy), but i live in Longmont, which is about 20 minutes east of Boulder, and I can't say enough good things about it. I lived in Boulder for close to two years before moving out here and agree with a lot of the problems mentioned on this thread. Longmont -- or at least the neighborhood I'm in -- is quite lovely. Old, affordable homes! An awesome cheese shop! Lots of cool neighbors! Fewer (or, not any) CU students! Those mountains! COME TO LONGMONT.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

can someone briefly say why The Springs is so bad and hated? Got family there but haven't been there for 20 years other than brief pass-thrus/stopping at Garden of the Gods/horrible sushi experience.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

no freaking way to the mexican food or the twin peaks church / mall?

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

No freaking way to the Mexican! Or, I mean ... are you just comparing to northern Colorado, or have you eaten down south and you're still going with Longmont? I have a hard time believing Mexican in Longmont has surpassed what you get down around/past Pueblo.

Colorado Springs is largely bad and hated for being intensely conservative/evangelical, and having served for a long time as a center for lots of varieties of huge right-wing religious groups who want to focus on your family. It has self-consciously whitebread ideas sometimes, possibly due to fear of Mexicans; possibly due to its geography being somewhat deformed and disconnected in ways that completely blast any notion of human beings living in a community with one another, partly due to weird land speculation that went BOOM during the 80s savings-and-loan scandal; also possibly due to the Air Force Academy and NORAD being nearby. Also lots of people are weird. Also the Mexican food is not as good as it is further south, though if you live further south the Springs is a good place to go for bigger malls, with Chick-Fil-As. In sum, Colorado Springs is weird and conservative and creates a weird liberal enclave/prison around Colorado College, but on the plus side, the stretches of I-25 leading out of it are very pretty and worth driving on.

nabisco, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:35 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i guess i would amend that to best mexican food on the front range (boulder, denver, ft. collins etc.). Actually have spent next to no time at all down south, though I'm planning on it this summer.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

The drive to CO springs is pretty, and Manitou Springs is cool for the penny arcade thinger, but last summer my sister and I decided to drive down to CO springs to look around and go hiking and things and we decided that town is really, really hideous.

It does have a ZOO on a MOUNTAIN though which is cool.

I'm totally a northern colorado girl though.

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i went to a party near lefthand canyon (betw. boulder & lyons) a couple weeks back and it was a serious Boulder yuppie kind of scene. Very well-off pseud-bohemians. I won't front, though, I'd live up there in a second if I had the $$$. Outrageously gorgeous.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks for the springs lowdown, nabisco. it seemed like a weird place to me, but not necessarily in an unpleasant way. but like i said, have spent hardly any time there in the past 20years.
where is the good mex food south of Pueblo? Along I-25, or further west, in the mountains? I couldn't find any good food til I hit New Mexico.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, I grew up in Pueblo, so I'm biased toward the Mexican around there. There's not much to point to outside of that in terms of specific towns, but anytime I had decent Mexican in small towns anywhere in the area -- Canon City, La Junta, Trinidad, wherever -- it tended to be a lot better than up north. (Never mind crossing the border into New Mexican goodness.)

nabisco, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:04 (fifteen years ago) link

(Now that I think about it, I'm not actually sure I-25 passes through much of anything between Pueblo and New Mexico -- Trinidad? Walsenberg? Rye? So yeah, once you're past Pueblo, you tend to start checking the mileage for Raton and not stopping.)

nabisco, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it's pretty much a no man's land past Pueblo on I-25, but I had fantasies of there being a Shangri La of Mexican food hidden in those mountains.
If I'm not mistaken, Longmont has a huge ConAgra processing facility (chickens, for sure, don't know what else. i used to work at their HQ in HR), and employs a good deal of Mexicans, which would explain the food oasis there.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link

SRY SO DRUNK BOULDER

Z S, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a hard time making up my mind about Boulder. When we lived there, my friends and I used to compare it to Dairy, from Stephen King's, It. You keep looking around hoping that someone else will acknowledge that there is something terribly wrong about the place, but, like you said, it's all glazed over eyes.

That being said, there were days when shit was way bad, and all I had to do was take a look at the flat irons and it would wash away.

I was planning to move to China this fall, but salary expectations and visa problems are making that less of a viable option. I think my girlfriend and I are moving to Boulder in August.

two weeks pass...

Anybody lived in Ouray or Silverton?

Alex in Denver, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 10:18 (fifteen years ago) link

six months pass...

I moved back here, to Boulder. I got dragged to some awful show at the Boulder Theatre (Charlie Hunter), with a bunch of people standing around not even paying attention to the music.

This is the weird thing about the jam band scene. Most of the people I know who go to these shows walk around and socialize, meet people they saw half way across the country at some other lame show, and only intermittently notice the music.

Other than that, I am extremely happy. I've lived here before, when I could hardly bare it,but now I've got a decent job and can actually enjoy the place. Side note, this is one of the most fit conscious cities in the country, yet when I live here I pack on the pounds.

Benjamin-, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 05:41 (fifteen years ago) link

five years pass...

Family vacation in Steamboat Springs next week, meeting up with even more family. I've always had an irrational hatred of Colorado, so I admit I am prejudiced, but I'm also open to having my mind changed. So: what am I in for? Hippies? Bobos? Bozos? I'm sure it will be fun with fam regardless.
