I'm very sorry.

This is an online petition for J.D. to come back. (other threads for other matters...)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I sign my name here.

Sick Mouthy.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

come back J0hn!

!@@#@!#@%!#%^#

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope it was snap anger and not a growing disillusionment broken by the preverbial straw, and that J0hn - one of my favorite posters before i even knew he was a mo*ntain goat - will reassess and come back.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What's happened? Must be bad for J0hn to go as he's one of the most patient and eloquent posters her.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

should be 'here' obv.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

- cozen.

I agree with his leave though. so.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Return, ersatz Midwesterner ;-).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Here here, your contributions on this board are valuable and loved by many and I for one loved knowing you were about, it'd be a shame for you to go over whats really been a bit of a misjudgment, now amended with (what seems) little harm done, all things considered!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Come back, please.

love kate

E.S.P (ipsofacto), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

Lucy

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not entirely sure I'd describe John as terribly patient, but it's a poorer board without him. And look, Madchen's so upset you even get her real name!

Please come back John,
Love Mark

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Babe, I love you so
I want you to know
That I'm going to miss your love
The minute you walk out that door

So please don't go
Don't go
Don't go away
Please don't go
Don't go
I'm begging you to stay

If you leave
At least in my lifetime
I've had one dream come true
I was blessed to be loved
By someone as wonderful as you

Babe, I love you so
I, I want yo to know
That I'm going to miss your love
The minute you walk out that door

So please don't go
Don't go
Don't go away
Hey, hey, hey
I need your love
I'm down on my knees
Beggin' please, please, please
Don't go
Don't you hear me baby
please don't go
Don't leave me now
Oh, no, no, no, no
Please don't go
I want you to know
That I, I, I, love you so
Don't leave me baby
Please don't go

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what happened but ILX will be a poorer place without J0hn. Please stay.

Rock Bastard, Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What everyone else said. J0hn, your knowedlege, humor and (this stands out a lot for me, since it's sometimes rare on ILX) ability to develop your arguments without ever getting nasty would be terribly missed if you didn't come back. Also, as I said before, DON'T LEAVE US ALONE WITH MOMUS!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The man has a point. J0hn's cool. The ILX brain drain has already taken some gooduns - don't go already!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey. I have no idea what happened, but I sincerely hope you don't go J0hn.

C J (C J), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with those guys.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

For those of you who want to know what happened, read the "Excelsior the Book" thread.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

May I add my voice to the chorus?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Some things must be beyond parody - any other sequence of events would surely have produced a "J0hn, go! Don't come back!" thread by now.

J0hn, you're one of the saner posters here. Reconsider?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Aah right, I can see why he was pissed off enough to leave.

Maybe if we made a cake he might come back.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

We can ill afford to lose one of our most intelligent and interesting and thoughtful ILXers, and one of my favourites. I hope you'll reconsider, J0hn.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello there the angel from my nightmare
The shadow in the background of the morgue
The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley
We can live like Jack and Sally if we want
Where you can always find me
And we'll have Halloween on Christmas
And in the night we'll wish this never ends
We'll wish this never ends

(I miss you I miss you)
(I miss you I miss you)

Where are you and I'm so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stared I counted
The Webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
Like indecision to call you
and hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight
Stop this pain tonight

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)

I miss you (miss you miss you)
I miss you (miss you miss you)
I miss you (miss you miss you)
I miss you (miss you miss you)
(I miss you miss you)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

this is all kind of silly. if john wants to be a pissy bitch, it's his perogative.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

But we lose a poster we like. So it's our prerogative to try and get him back.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I just signed the petition to be cool. I'm not even an Esq. I am a mandible, tho'.

I am not a mandible (Barima), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess and Mark both otm.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus-as-J0hn: 'Really, ILX, eat a bag of dicks for this.'

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I don't post on here often, but I check it just about every day, and it's usually to read what a few specific posters write. One of those is J0hn.

I really hope he returns soon.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

He will

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY ALWAYS DO

I am not a mandible (Barima), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

In other news esoj/surfacenoise has also left ilx.

E.S.P (ipsofacto), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we redefine 'leaving' the same way we did 'reproducing / quoting'?

Serge Gainsbourg: 'I give up smoking every five minutes.'

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

really kate?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish he'd come back. I miss his lj, too.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand change and getting angry and stuff and it's not like I want everything to be the same all the time, but come back guys, I'm too selfish to keep quiet.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

In other news esoj/surfacenoise has also left ilx.

????!!!!????

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Thread?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, it's true I'm afraid. But I've heard from sources it's got little to do with you guys and more to do with his own personal reasons.

E.S.P (ipsofacto), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ESOJ mentioned over on one of the Aussie/NZ threads that he was bowing out. He's a good feller and I hope all goes well with him.

I will miss J0hn greatly, and he knows this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I will also be on 'reduced service' over the next three months, as I'll be in Tokyo helping set up Vice Japan and playing shows. I know Ned will be inconsolable.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be leaving between 2.30 and 3.00 this afternoon. I have to go to a meeting. Actually it might be nearer 3.10 when I get back as I may go via the canteen. Please don't worry about me...it's been great here. Until 3.10 then...love you all. Mwah xx

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

have some cake with yr tea Dr C. make it 3.20, no one gives a shit really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr C we'll miss you!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the Borges story where someone packs a whole eternity into the walk towards the firing squad, because each step he takes can be divided into two, and so on, infinitely? In the same spirit I think it's quite reasonable to say 'Between this post and my next post I am never coming back.'

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, The Secret Miracle, 1945.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

every time i try for closure i am confronted with achilles, a ruler and that tortoise over there!

dave amos, Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

But he pinched the idea from the fake execution scene in 'The Idiot'.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Which Dostoyesky of course pinched from his own real fake execution scene.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Everytime you say goodbye, I die a little...

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a fake execution scene in the Idiot?

I like J0hn.

Fergal (Ferg), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There was. And as Momus rightly points out, it was based on the real life experience of Dostoievsky, who was marched out to be executed only to be reprieved at the last moment.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember it because I have a sieve-like brain. Or did he just like mention it having happened to somebody rather than being a major plot event? I knew about the Dosto-sentence-commut-o story.

Sorry for derailing the J0hnlub thread.

Fergal (Ferg), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Borges stole the idea from Pliny the Elder.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just a page-long story told by Myshkin, it's not a major part of the plot.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Signed,

briania (briania), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I admire john and I will, for as long as he doesn't come back.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the namedrop, schmuckington.

I wish J0hn would come back so I had someone worthwhile to read while lurking.

Nate in exile (natedetritus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

[runs in breathless, slams door]

I'm BACK! Sorry I'm late folks, I know you're all sick with anxiety because I'm half an hour late. But all's well and here I am.

**have some cake with yr tea Dr C. make it 3.20, no one gives a shit really**

You're right Julio, no-one gives a shit.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

although, presumably enough to post about it?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 24 June 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope J0hn returns, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i drove to spaceland from over an hour away but then drove back after discovering he wasn't coming on until 11:30 and because i was behind in school and it was getting close to the end of the quarter but now i wish i had stayed because those three compilation are growing on me in odd ways so now i think i'll keep on coming back to them for the rest of my life.

youn, Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

J0hn, I really like reading your posts and enjoy your presence here. And even though we rarely interact, I still like to tell people that I'm real close friends with that guy from the Mtn Gtz. So if you don't come back, I'll lose considerable esteem in my gated community.

But really, I like you.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Borges stole the idea from Pliny the Elder.

-- Charlie Rose (charlieros...), June 24th, 2004

Hmm, 'Charlie Rose', that's exactly the kind of thing J0hn would have said.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just nipping out to go to the loo. Back in a minute.

(Can't everyone just please come back again and we can have a group hug and all be friends again? Please?)

C J (C J), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mzombiepower.html

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss J0hn.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

J0hn would seem to be a fantastic guy and a consistently OTM poster, but he said that the book was only one of the reasons why he has considered leaving ILX. If he wants to go, people should just let him go.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

He must feel like that guy with all the zombies scratching at his door. You know, in the movie.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(not that ILXers are zombies or anything)

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

There has been a curious proliferation of zombie threads lately...

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! I didn't actually see the zombies thing upthread!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

HIVEMIND! I'M LEAVING!!!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It should be said that there are many good reasons to leave ILX. One is this:

Grass Widow: “a divorced or separated wife” or “a wife whose husband is temporarily absent.”

ILX Widow: "an abandoned or separated wife" or "a wife whose husband just cannot stay away from ILX."

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a scrapbooking and yoga widower. :(

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Never say you're leaving, I've done that before and you feel stupid when you come back. Take a break, but never say never. Best wishes and all that jazz.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

From the mouth of Ted Leo:

"J-J-J-Johhhnny
All he left us was a [lot of really excellent posts]
And oooooh why'd he come
And oooooh why'd he leave
And oooh why do I grieve?"

I hope he comes back.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

After considering this, I think AdamL is probably right.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

We've all thought about it!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(leaving that is, not me being right!)

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX in acting like a cult SHOCKAH

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No one is stopping him from leaving, they're just saying they really wish he wouldn't.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, would you quit pointing out the obvious and get back to helping me mix the kool-aid?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

J0hn, I enjoy your posts, your intelligence, your answers to Momus. ILX won't be the same without you. I'd like you to come back, if you feel you can.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only think that J0hn's departure means that we will have redouble our efforts not to let Nick Currie WIN. Buck up, soldiers -- we got work to do!

J (Jay), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"The only winning move is not to play."

http://www.wind.dk/images/wopr.jpg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If I buy into that rationale, will I also get to schtup Carrie Bradshaw?

J (Jay), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-b-b-but J, Darnielle/Momus discussions frequently turned into really interesting stuff, mainly coz their knowedlege/interests/temperament overlap so much. Everyone else vs Momus always just ends with frustrated accusations of insanity. Plus the whole novelty value of INDIE GANG WAR, of course.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only think that J0hn's departure means that we will have redouble our efforts not to let Nick Currie WIN. Buck up, soldiers -- we got work to do!

I can't handle the burden alone. I'm clearly not up to the task.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope J0hn comes back, he is a big hunk

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like having J0hn around. If he needs to go, though, then he needs to go. And if we had a party, and invited everyone we knew, we would see the biggest gift would be JD, etc.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddammit I'd piss on a sparkplug if I thought it'd do any good.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wouldn't? Besides me I mean.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I'm sad to hear about ESOJ as well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sorry to see J0hn go, as well. I like the fact that he's not afraid to make moral judgments. (I don't really believe in moral facts any more, but it doesn't seem to make that much practical difference. Some I guess, but not too much in terms of discourse. You (I) are still going to make judgments as a human being in a community.)

Anyway, J0hn, do what you want, but I think this is a situation that can be negotiated. mark has already backed away from the whole ILX book idea, so I think the immediate problem is resolved. If you now are too afraid of the risks involved with posting more or less under your real name, that's a different matter, and I can understand not wanting to risk losing control of how you present yourself.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

He belongs to the world now. Vale J0hn!

OK, come back now please.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Please come back, John- I miss you already, sigh

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

did you notice that when people slip down slowly off the users list no one notices or cares, but when they storm off in a huff it's every chicken little for himself?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

some people probably notice or care. but you knew that.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

However, yes, his absence saddens me quite a bit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I really care when people slip of the users list, I'm just too stoic to let my feelings show.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's only natural to take more notice of something drastic and abrupt than something gradual.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i think jim's just taking a break isn't he kate?

It's hard to say, if I were to describe how long he'll be gone, I'd say indefinate. News to hand indicates strong reasons for not posting, but nothing to indicate not lurking.

I'm pissed cuz ILM's metal faction is already really small. I blame everyone on ILE. You should be ashamed of yourself. The biggest hassle we have to deal with on ILM is Nicky Wire in a banana suit servicing Emma Bunton in a row boat with George Michael.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, don't get too excited. I don't know that he's still reading. It's just an assumption I've made on the basis that I'm fairly certain he's not pissed off with ilx. Just not posting for the time being.

NO

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's okay, Gaz. If you hear something cool add it to the great Rolling Metal Thread 2004 that JOHN STARTED. ILM metal fanz are cool for the most part. They don't bite. (well, siegbran might bite a little if he finds the time to tear himself away from his beloved techno mixes.)

FFS ESOJ isnt going anywhere, he took a break from being online for personal reasons nothing to do with this board, any other board or the internet in general. I dont think he'd like being linked into this as if he threw a hissy and left because he didnt, and has said he'll be back in a while. Gaaahh.

J0hn, J0hn, J0hn, he been gone so long,
He been gone gone gone so long.
Gone, gone, gone, he been gone so long,
Well, I wonder if I'm ever gonna see my goat

Ever since he left me,
I sure feel all alone
A little misunderstanding,
I can't get him on the telephone
Hanging out down on Main Street
Living in a different world
Standing around with the gang on the corner
Talking about my goat

My goat, he was the world to me,
He's gone, away across the sea
My goat is just a memory
To me, so far away.

J0hn J0hn J0hn he been gone so long,
He been gone gone gone so long

He didn't have to leave me
He didn't have to run
He didn't have to go without a
Word to anyone
I hope he's doin' all right,
but I got no way to know
Unless he gets to hear this song,
hear it on the radio

My goat, he was the world to me,
He's gone, away across the sea
My goat is just a memory
To me, so far away.

J0hn, J0hn, J0hn, he been gone so long,
he been gone gone J0hn so long

I hope he gets the message
gotta get him back, you know
Gonna track him down, gonna find that goat,
gonna tell him that I love him so
Put the word on the grapevine
spread it all around the world
sooner or later I know I'm gonna get him,
talkin' about my goat ...........

My goat!!!!!!!

Skottie, Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

momus you're being kinda... mean.

I'm taking the Courtney Love line on suicide: 'Asshole!' I also see J0hn's gesture as a (somewhat melodramatic) form of self-censorship, and you know what I think about censorship. With the book's cancellation the pretext for going is removed. Everybody involved has apologised, and everybody not involved has entreated. He could still have other motives:

1. Personal reasons. Fair enough, he should stay away for a while and do other things. Posting here is not compulsory. Everyone should leave from time to time.
2. Feeling creeped out ('uncanny') about ever having posted here. Paranoid and somewhat naive, but again, everyone should take time out to consider what all this public revelation is really adding up to.
3. Punishing us for tarnishing his celebrity, or playing victim. Not very noble, deserves affectionate satire.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 June 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

But since that is impracticable, I will now fall on my own sword. Does so, misses. Damn!

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 June 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 June 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That second point is a damned sharp sword, I must say. Thh thhh thh...

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 26 June 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Or 4., Momus: having been abruptly re-reminded that one's privacy/anonymity within the ILX community are actually very fragile things, and that the board's ever-increasing notoriety makes them ever more likely to be disturbed, J0hn reconsiders his personal decision to take part in it --- concluding, not insensibly, that the pleasure of posting doesn't quite make up for the less fortunate effects said posting might theoretically have. Which really isn't a huff or a spat: just one of those bold reminders that something you've always known to be the case really is, urgently, the case, and you stop ignoring it and take action.

Just as an example: when I started posting on this board, it consisted of a couple dozen people who posted using their real names and often their work email addresses --- in part because there seemed little danger of anyone being interested in the thing, but in larger part (I imagine) because the threads were so reasonable and friendly and free or weird or scary intrusions. Anyone who read it really would be looking at something very much like a conversation between friends, and so there was very little worry about anything. As the board grew and that sense of few-friendly-folks vanished, most people turned to using pseudonyms. Now it's grown and grown in unpredictable ways, and the dynamic is completely different; I don't think it's so odd to look in one day and be reminded that things have changed from the way they were before, and that maybe it's time to do something about that: go anonymous, not write certain things, or hop off altogether.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 26 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually what I thought he meant by #2.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 26 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(That should be "free of weird or scary intrusions." Which is another way of saying that it was all well and good putting your name up there when the only thing that would follow it was Mark S telling a cute story about his sister -- as opposed to, I dunno, some troll or random poster embedding ch!ld p0rn images or saying something really ghastly. The times they have been a'changing and there's always going to be some moment where you decide to change with them.)

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 26 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose that probably is what he meant. He just said it in such a mean way that I felt obligated to rephrase.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 26 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst of it is that it's been apparent from early on (but I guess I can only speak for myself on that) that we could end up here if we left it so open, and it's depressing to see those who always argue for unrestricted freedoms pull an "oh shit" when it leads to the logical places. I'm respecting Momus a little more than usual right now, because despite being one of those, he's not shying away from the consequences. At least not yet. Even with foresight, it could be some see ilx as an organic venture that has a built in expiry date and are just waiting for their particular watermarks to be reached before they go elsewhere. Which is a valid viewpoint, sure, but it's also contrary to the inclination of people who prefer to conserve what they have. I'm not sure how much longer I'll last myself, but then again I have been saying that for some time.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 26 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally I'll be happy to drop in here right up until it starts to bore me, though in retrospect I do wish I'd never (a) posted under my name, (b) revealed certain personal details, or (c) said certain things having to do with sensitive political issues. That's par for the course, though: I've also written plenty of things as paid work that I wish I could somehow yank out of the public sphere.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 26 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure it was abt no1 bcz he was postign quite a bit lately, it would be a coincidence if something personal came up at the same time as the mark's bk idea.

I'm trying to think here...many of the two dozen or so posters are still using their real names and addresses (I came here in late 2001 but I've read many of the older threads). Though some (like jess or di) have changed their names for fun it seems, but their emails are still the same.

I remember seeing j0hn's actual name, then he ungoogled it, but after reading his tantrum on the other thread I've got to conclude he never really made an effort to get any kind of anon in here.

I'd like to think he'll give it a month or two, and come back under a completely diff name and addy and shuts up abt whenever the mountain goats are mentioned, or (better still) slag 'em off if another thread comes up.

But whatever really, been reading last planet a bit lately and if he keeps that going then great. Hope he doesn't shut himself off completely.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, for all we know he *is* still here, revelling in the freedom of posting under a different name. If so, well, go him.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Sunday, 27 June 2004 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If it could, in some parallel world, be broken down so simply and clearly, I wonder which people here would prefer:

J0hn posts here but releases a rather weak Mountain Goats album.

J0hn stops posting here and releases an amazing record.

I'm not saying that posting necessarily has a deleterious effect on art, just a hypothesis. I'm interested to know whether people here would, forced with a choice, prefer to have J0hn as a friend or as an artist.
