I AM NOT AN ANIMAL

Did anyone see this last night? Pete Baynham-scripted animation about very middle class talking animals on BBC2. I thought it was excellent. The little lipsing popcrazed Manc bird put me in mind of Paul Morley. The Scottish tracksuited monkey also already has a place in my heart.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago) link

I liked the bird, that was Steve Coogan wasn't it? The Scottish accented monkey annoyed me because the Scottish accent was so crap. Funniest thing in it was the Animal Liberation guy. Overall, not funny enough. But give it time.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago) link

A good start. I liked the small-breasted rodent.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:32 (twenty years ago) link

it was more entertaining than funny, but it was funny enough. I thought the Anim Lib jokes were v poor tho. i liked the horses inability to recognise noises.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago) link

after 3 minutes the manic nature of the animation (everything's too, er, animated, too fidgety) got unbearable and i turned over.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, I found the animation problematic too

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. Do any of you Cockernees know if Victor Lewis-Smith reviews it in today's Standard?

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

hi Tag!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago) link

Tag - I'll let you know if someone leaves one on a bus. I didn't watch it because I was convinced it would be awful. I had no idea Baynham was the scriptor.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago) link

Thank you Mike. Err, hello Steve.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

Alas, I derived little from it, and started watching the news instead.

I didn't like the scatological stuff around Coogan's character; and I am slightly concerned that Coogan always seems to do the same voice (nowadays? or has he always?).

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

horse: "ok, everyone make animal noises"
...
monkey: "mieow"
horse: "no, your own noise!"
monkey: "mooonn-key"

i wuvved it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

coogan has one voice, w/ slight variations, I think.

from the advert, I thought this would be unwatchable: the animation looked to be too cut-and-pastey and texturey and distracty, to be able to understand what was supposed to be happening.

it was good, though--after a few minutes, the animation wasn't too bothersome and it got quite funny. the monkey, yeah, was good. I'm sure there were things I didn't like or thought were OK, about it, but, overall, I enjoyed it and I will almost definitely watch it, again, if it happens to be on and I have the telly on and I am watching it and there is nothing better on.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

', yeah,'

', but,'

the bellefox, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:16 (twenty years ago) link

those are very different, you understand.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago) link

The animation gave me a big bloody headache - it's rathergood.com stuff, right? sure looks like it - and it quickly became clear that episode one was all about introducing us to the set-up and the characters (and thus pretty low on the joke front), but all the same I'm glad I caught it. Reckon it's worth persevering with, on the strength of the various comedic types involved alone, but personally I'm far more excited about THE MIGHTY BOOSH nearly being on terrestrial telly at flippin' last...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

i thought the boosh was only on beeb3?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

on the strength of the various comedic types involved alone

did you manage to catch "the all star comedy show"?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately before I watched this I thought I'd give "Two Pints of Lager..." another chance - this is possibly the worst TV comedy I've ever seen, it appears to have been written by a 12 year old, and a not very precocious one at that.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago) link

haha, cookie and I thought the same thing. well, cookie suggested it. "let's see just how bad it is." how bad is it? it couldn't actually be worse, I think. does ralf little write it/some of it? I kept saying how embarrassed, he should be. the number of people they involve, for such a piece of crap, is incredible.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

If I actually paid my licence fee I'd be inclined not to pay it in protest..... if that makes any sense

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago) link

It was astonishingly bad. I think the BBC owe US money after they screened that monstrosity.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

we just paid ours, recently.

why don't you pay yours?

I don't know what makes me angrier: the fact that I am paying for that rubbish to be made, etc., or that you are not.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

"the all star comedy show"

the geordie astronauts made me laugh
the rest was embarassing

de, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago) link

I don't own a TV, therefore surely I don't need a licence fee?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't see the geordie astronauts. the bits w/ vic and bob were funny, the rest was awful. why are neil morrissey and leslie ash (and others) in? ALL star? COMEDY? show.

you're right, dadaismus, but how do you see a telly, if you don't have one?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago) link

There's a TV in the flat I stay in. It's not mine tho.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago) link

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago) link

Haha I was going to say "I think Barry likes '2PoLaaPoCP'". Did you see last nite's episode, Baz? It was really the most abjectly excruciating 30 minutes of tv I have ever seen.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago) link

It wasn't great, Jezza, but then it was like the start of the 1st series as far as I can tell, so you have to give it a certain amount of indulgence. Not as much as you might think it needs, mind, but there you go.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

BUT WITH REALLY REALLY SHIT 'SONGS'!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I agree. That was a mistake. I somehow managed to forget about them.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

hehe, i quite liked the song about biscuits, although it was really just poor man's pitman...

anyway, this is meant to be about I AM NOT AN ANIMAL.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

Coupling is worse than "2 Pints".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

dom, you are wrong, coupling follows in the great terry and june tradition of embarrassment and farce, whereas 2pints is just bad swear gags...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

2polaapc has grown on me, and the song skits were not awful - they were not much worse than spitting image parodies and funnier. being about biscuits and all things genital

coupling is also great

hang on we've done this to death loads of times - use other conversations ILE

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago) link

Not last night's episode Dom, believe me. Tho "Coupling" is fucking dire.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago) link

coupling is nowhere near as offensive.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:17 (twenty years ago) link

I quite liked the biscuit song, but I was in a very strange stress induced mood last night.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

Alang I kiss you. Dadaismus, what are your favourite sitcoms?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago) link

"I Didn't Know You Cared"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

I saw some of Two Pints.

It was, indeed, bad.

It makes me think about how out-there young people are, in terms of sexuality, and so on. I mean -- the things that they dare to say, in public, or, to each other. !

the bellefox, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

most young people, that I have heard of, are not really like that.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

It was okay, slightly funny not very haha, I can imagine being really annoyed at the animation after a while. And then there is the Coogan factor.

I admit to kinda liking the biscuit song too, but only coz I like biscuits.

(coupling also started a new series (4) last night btw, but is only on bbc3 at the moment. the tivo completely failed to turn the set-top box over to the right channel though so i missed the first 10 minutes)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

I was really looking forward to BBC2 Comedy Night last night. After one hour and fifteen minutes I had still not laughed once. When I realised I was missing Frank Skinner's new sitcom Shane, which I had enjoyed on Saturday night, my misery was complete.

Out of the All-Star Comedy Show I enjoyed the Vic and Bob bits very much, but man cannot live on ten minutes alone.

I also BOUGHT Spaced, which is a load of old cock if ever I saw it.

I see Patsy Kensit is in Emmerdale Farm.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

I also BOUGHT Spaced, which is a load of old cock if ever I saw it.

Wow, this is a depressing turn of events. I usually think of Spaced (or perhaps Black Books) as my banker for those estranged from Brit comedy since Fletch left HM Slade Prison.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

I must be missing something.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

don't doubt yourself.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

You're probably not missing something inherent in the show, maybe something native to other folks' experience of the show. Or something. I think we need a PJ Miller's Top Five BritComs of the 90s/00s.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe I was a bit harsh. I've just watched episode 5, where they break in and rescue Colin, and although I didn't laugh, I didn't fall into a coma either. Trouble is, I thought it was going to be as good as Sean of the Dead. Also my previous purchase was The Office and it isn't anywhere near as good as that, whether in content or design. Not that it's a fair comparison in anything other than value for money terms. I don't know if I can manage a Top Five. I haven't seen much. I think the character Pinball in Sweet Sixteen is really funny. He should have his own series.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago) link

I was avoiding shaun of the dead because of spaced and simon pegg, in general, but you thought it was OK/good?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

Go, RJG. I had no idea who Pegg was, but I really enjoyed it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

And make sure you sit between Cookie and Madchen.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

I enjoy Dick's position too.

I am about to watch the American THE OFFICE - I'll report back in 40 minutes.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

Note #1 - it uses ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" as its theme tune.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Let us know what you think, Bazzer.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Hmm. Well, I thought it would be a disaster. The impossible thing is trying to figure out what I'd have thought of it had I never seen the British one. I only actually laughed about twice, but then I don't think my first UK version was much different.

The biggest and probably fatal problem was the David Brent character. It's like he's saying all these thing right, but they seem so... dead. It doesn't help that he's very normal looking - not chubby and sweaty with a try-hard goatee like Ricky Gervais, and most importantly, without the constant nervous half smile that reeks of desperation. It's like watching a robot act the part.

The other characters aren't too bad. I liked the Dawn actress, and the Tim character manages both verisimilitude and sympathy. Again, though, they were both a little Stepford. This made the Gareth character seem too self-consciously weird - it's not right that he's the only abnormal one in the show. The British casting was wonderful because they looked *exactly* like the everymen we sit next to on the tube and at work; in this version you can tell they *tried* to achieve utter normality, but in doing so lost the jagged edges and mundane individualities of the protagonists.

It's hard to criticise the script as it's lifted very closely from (what I remember of) the British version. But this isn't the key - it's the tiny, tiny margin, the fine line between comedy and tragedy in the most mundane of situations, that they haven't quite captured.

So, any Americans who've never seen the British version want to give their thoughts?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

I've never seen the British version (yet), I don't think the U.S. version will air until the fall though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago) link

Oh - I thought it was on very soon. My mistake. Ah well.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

shaun of the dead was OK and, even, quite funny, for a while. the action and drama? were a bit much, in the second half. I still don't really like simon pegg and I still quite like nick frost (I learnt his name, again, tonight). it's still a bit cacky, w/ the same people and, you'd imagine, the same jokes. I sat next to ally and he was sitting next to madchen but I'd been promised no snogging, from lucy, at least, beforehand, and I got it. so, yeah, again, I quite liked a bit of it, a bit.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

I have now watched the entire first series of Spaced. It's not as bad as I thought. I will watch series 2.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:12 (twenty years ago) link

series 2 was less funny but stillf good. spaced is the only thing i've ever watched with the commentary on and it's obvious they are having fun (and maybe beer) recording it.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think I'll ever be convinced.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago) link

The only commentary I've listened to is Tony Wilson on 24 Hour Party People.

If series 2 is *less* funny, does it compensate for this in any way?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

For the first 20 minutes of Shaun of the Dead I really couldn't see what the fuss was about (perhaps I was concentrating too hard on working out where I'd seen that bloke before - it was DANGER INCOMING ATTACK and he cooked squirrel, take note Cabbage). The next 45 minutes were pretty good. The rest was OK. There isn't enough knee room in the GFT. I didn't do any snogging. The end.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

If series 2 is *less* funny, does it compensate for this in any way?

It compensates by having the single best episode of the whole thing and a very satisfyingly plotted final episode. And just by being so damn adorable in ways that may forever escape you & RJG.

I'm not too keen on the bounty-hunter element that's been introduced. It could well limit the plot - I don't want every episode to be a rehash of last night's.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:01 (twenty years ago) link

I taped IANAA due to the outrageous unfolding drama up at Sunderland; someone at London Live managed to cue in a Vanessa Feltz jingle, interrupting the commentary just as John Oster took the first spot kick. I like to think it put him off.

The VCR was groaning unpleasantly last night - possibly under the weight of my expectations - so I expect a flickery, distorted mess on playback. Like jaaaaam then.

Wow, that was terrific. "The planet of men and women, ifyouwill."

As for Coogan only having one voice well, y'know, that's funny cos the guy got his break in the first place as an impressionist. See 1988 Royal Variety Show (or somesuch), his double act with John Thomson, Spitting Image, Spartacus Mills, The Pool, etc.

I could do without the rodent and the monkey. But, y'know, every show needs a Twist.

You don't like Twist?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:08 (twenty years ago) link

Have you been pulling my leg, Michael? The first two episodes of series 2 of Spaced were much better than series 1. And when you put the DVD in the machine it says, 'get off, you bummer'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 21 May 2004 07:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I think you're just getting used to it, PJM; you didn't have the 12-month fog of anticipation as season #2 loomed. Also: tanned and slim Jessica Stevenson did not compute. Or alternatively, you're right.

I don't dislike Twist; I was going to say 'Mike from The Young Ones' but it wasn't as smart-arsed.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 21 May 2004 07:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Another good show this week, I thought. I may be easily pleased though - Coogan only needs to slip into his Deep Bath register for phrases like "rusty ambulance" and I'm choking on my Quorn fillets. "Meat drawer" struck home too and I love the sing-a-not-a-longs.

I popped over to Cook'd and Bomb'd to see if the comedy netgeeks were as chuffed as me with the new Baynham product and discovered that it was 'unfunny, badly-animated garbage' with the usual wistful moan about 'remember how good he was in 199x'. If the same script was on R4 they'd be in excelsis.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:17 (nineteen years ago) link

In fairness, when the grim reaper ask me what the funniest thing I've ever seen is, it's not going to be a satire on middle-class obliviousness. Though some of it is pretty good, and "It's the internet!" will live in my heart for a while.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I was giggling like an idiot at some of the stuff on Monday, far more so than the one before, especially when the monkey spends all their money on a broken laptop and the sparrow makes him dunk himself in the sink repeatedly, and he's all 'put your head in the water again please. RIGHT IN.' and the monkey's just like doing it even though he's eighteen times the size of him, and the horse is all 'STOP SUGGESTING HE DOES THAT' in the Coogan voice.

Fergal (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:30 (nineteen years ago) link

and yes the BBC lumping different comedy shows together within the same hour or two is sort of annoying if you like one but hate the other (i think i can take or leave I Am Not An Animal thus far but i refuse to watch TPOLAPOCP) - but then again maybe it's their way of luring enthusiasts of conventional sitcom towards the more surreal unorthodox stuff

I don't think I'm ever going to be able to watch a whole episode *all the way through*, I get fed up. Also, it was very violent at the beginning and they seem to be upping the filth factor. I found it quite disturbing.

Surreal comedy doesn't seem to have much to do with surrealism, not that I'd know, so what I'm wondering is, what would be a better label for surreal comedy?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 09:04 (nineteen years ago) link

yes i couldn't think of a more apt label, it's not that surreal once you get past the initial premise.

what would be a better label for surreal comedy?

Disturbtainment? Oddcom? Unencumberedbyrealitygagfest.

I taped this cos I didn't fancy watching it with the in-laws. Mrs Berry seemed to enjoy (not necessarily a vintage) Porridge the other night though.

Note #1 - it uses ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" as its theme tune.

Interesting that the Office (US) pilot episode had been around for almost a full year before it finally aired (March 24, 2005).

I never realized how much The Office theme song sounds like "Mr. Blue Sky" but, hell it sure does.
