Sir Jimmy mugged for his glasses

Sir Jimmy said he would give his mugger a box of chocolates
Sir Jimmy Savile has been mugged by a woman in Leeds - but described it as a "marvellous" experience.
The veteran star, aged 81, said the female thief made off with his John Lennon-style glasses as he was leaving a function at the Queens Hotel.

Sir Jimmy has reported it to police but compared his experience to when he was chased by fans in the 1960s.

"The fact I've not been mugged for over 50 years, I thought it was marvellous, it was just like old times," he said.

The former DJ and TV presenter, who lives in Roundhay, said he was walking down the hotel's corridor at about midnight on Wednesday when the woman pounced.

'Gave me a thrill'

"She was walking alongside me and the next thing she reaches up - I thought she was going to give me an embrace but she grabbed my glasses and took off down the corridor," he said.

"I thought, I've been mugged. How wonderful."

Sir Jimmy said that the unexpected theft hadn't left him unable to see as he has a spare pair of glasses.

He added: "I've told the police that if the girl turns up and I get my glasses back, I will give her a box of chocolates for giving me a 1950s thrill in 2007."

Sir Jimmy Savile has been reunited with his glasses days after they were snatched by a female prankster.
British Transport Police (BTP) have fixed it for the veteran star to get his John Lennon style spectacles back.

The glasses were snatched from Sir Jimmy's face as he left a function at the Queen's Hotel in Leeds last week.

The 81-year-old, who lives in the city's Roundhay area, compared the experience to being chased by fans in the 1960s and said it was "marvellous".

'String vests'

Sir Jimmy told the BBC that it was good old fashioned detective work that had tracked down his glasses.

He said officers had found out the woman's identity and tracked her down to a bar in Leeds over the weekend where they retrieved his glasses.

A spokeswoman for BTP said the woman had snatched his spectacles as "a bit of a prank" and that no further action would be taken against her.

Sir Jimmy said: "If this lady wants a souvenir, I do a good line in wearing string vests and if she wants to wrestle it off me then that's perfectly fine."

Great! We can ignore all expert opinions, stop hiring doctors and professionals and allow the tabloids to dictate Government policy. The same tabloids who pay 13-year-old criminals, put them on their front pages and encourage others to do the same.

A former nurse at the Leeds hospital where Savile worked as a porter, said he molested a brain-damaged hospital patient. June Thornton was recovering from an operation at Leeds General Infirmary when she says she saw Savile abuse the young girl.

"She had brain damage, and Jimmy Savile came in and kissed her," she told Sky News.

"He started kissing her neck, running his hands up and down her arms, and then started to molest her. Because I was laid flat on my back, there was nothing I could do."

Serious allegations of child abuse in Cleveland. And to my mind there's only one way of finding out whether it's true or not. And that is to call in Jimmy Savile. You can't afford to f*ck about, bring in an expert. Am I right? I mean, a friend of mine reckons Jimmy Savile is a paedophile. Rubbish. He's a child bender. That's why he does all the f*cking charity work, it's to gain public sympathy for when his case comes up. Aye, I've always known that. He might've fooled you, but not f*cking me I'll tell you that. He's not fooling this big-nosed Jewish b*stard, I'll tell you that. I've always thought that if you took the action of a w*nk and turned it into a voice you'd get Jimmy Savile wouldn't you. Now then, now then... lovely, lovely... oh, now then now then, oh, lovely... lovely... ooh..."

I have less sympathy with celebrities such as

Does anyone know who John Simpson was referring to when stories about "Uncle Dick" were reported the other day?

a punch-up at a web zing (NickB), Friday, 19 October 2012 12:02 (eleven years ago) link

The row over Jimmy Savile's four-decade career at the BBC has intensified after it emerged that the veteran journalist John Simpson claimed that top executives knew of sexual abuse by another star presenter in the 1950s and 60s.

Simpson referred to the star in his 1999 autobiography as "Uncle Dick" and said he had been a household name from the 1920s until his death in 1967. He claimed that BBC bosses up to the level of director general were aware of the allegations.

The former BBC News world affairs editor said he was told about sexual abuse by the star when he died and was asked to write an obituary.

"Week after week, children from all over the country could win competitions to visit the BBC and meet Uncle Dick," Simpson wrote in Strange Places, Questionable People.

"He would welcome them, show them around, give them lunch, then take them to the gents and interfere with them. If parents complained, the director general's office would write saying the nation wouldn't understand such an accusation against a much-loved figure."

The BBC refused to comment on the identity of the presenter.

Mark G, Friday, 19 October 2012 12:13 (eleven years ago) link

Where I grew up, there was a [prominent member of local community] well-known for putting moves on teenaged boys in his employ from the '60s onward. Boys who told their parents were believed, but there were no consequences for the abuser other than a few punches from dads, gossip or people using a competitor's service instead. People apparently didn't want to rip the man's wife's life apart by informing her about her husband's abuses, but she *had* to know. The neighbourhood omerta on the subject was not unusual for the Midwest in the '70s.

I can't imagine the offices of Associated Newspapers or any workplace associated with Rupert Murdoch being any better/worse an atmosphere than the BBC in the '60s/'70s - this is about a melding of extreme male privilege to a culture in thrall to celebrity. Benny Hill, indeed. The framework has only changed a little in TV Land. Law enforcement and politics are also areas historically full of 'unreconstructed' men so if you're female/feminist, you might be tempted to see all these guys yelling 'there! Look over THERE, not HERE!' about the conduct of contemporaries as some kind of distraction.

I too await the inevitable David Peace trilogy.

this isn't actually true, not least as the station was 'born' a few years before Peel died, when the Beeb was not so much venerating John as trying to hide him in the schedules somewhere.

The music industry has always been rife with the 15-year-old girlfriends and boyfriends of the Peter Pans within it. The fanzine girl dating the press officer; the GCSE students with a band, shagging older guys in bands/writers/PRs; age differences of between 10 and 15 years - I'm sure it's still going on w/just a change in players. A great many of the young women involved with older guys were really smart and precocious about their careers, but eager to swap school discos for the Heavenly Sunday Social.

Creepy all-powerful types who serve up groping and use intimidation and a place in the boys' club to make sure they never have to own up to their actions are a different order altogether - they're evil and should be held to account - but the consensual scenario above is definitely part of a sliding scale of male entitlement/females having to 'go along to get along', even if most of the young women genuinely want to be involved.

People did tell contemporaneously, but nothing was done. When parents or an adult in charge learn about an incident, sometimes there's a straight, sharp denial, but in cases where the adult believes the child, the adult often doesn't wind up taking it further. Most of the time it's because the adult believes the authorities won't do anything or the abuser will dissemble or emotionally blackmail if challenged. You'd need a lot of guts to take on someone like JS, especially if he had form as a thug.

The rumours have been around for ages - Irvine Welsh wrote a story about a corpse-fucking DJ and TV star called Freddy Royle in the mid-90s - but as far as I know they've never been mentioned in the media properly until now (very minor reports at end of last week, but nothign like Gamba on national radio at half past 8 in the morning).

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/jimmy-savile-was-a-necrophiliac-8222948.html

"The expression I came to associate with Savile's sexual partners was either one used by production assistants or one I made up to summarise their reports ... 'under-age subnormals'.

"He targeted the institutionalised, the hospitalised - and this was known. Why did Jimmy go to hospitals? That's where the patients were."

But he said these things were taking place at a time when staff failed to get to grips with the concept of paedophilia.

"It was considered so far beyond the pale that people didn't believe it happened," he said during the 5 Live Breakfast Show.

And he said the problems with failing to call Savile to account went well beyond the BBC.

He questioned why newspapers had not acted when he said a tabloid reporter had boasted that his colleagues were aware of a story linking Savile to "necrophilia".

Campbell pointed out: "That particularly lurid accusation that you have just brought to people's attention is one that has not been in the public domain."

Gambaccini agreed and asked "why not?". And he asked: "Who vetted the knighthood? Coco the clown?"

He said the entire society was taken in by Savile - "including the Prime Minister who invited him to Chequers; including the royal family, photographed with him, he got a knighthood in this country, he got a papal knighthood.

"This is not just the BBC this is history, this is a man who conned an entire society," Gambaccini added.

Watson wasn't talking about Peter Morrison...

On Sunday former Conservative minister Edwina Currie claimed that a leading Tory MP during Margaret Thatcher’s era had sex with underage boys.

She claimed in the Sunday Times that she had heard Sir Peter Morrison, Thatcher’s parliamentary private secretary and deputy chairman of the party, had sex with 16-year-old boys when the age of consent was 21.

Sir Peter died aged 51 in 1995.

Mr Watson later wrote on his blog: 'I am not naming the person for obvious reasons but for clarity it is not former MP, Peter Morrison.

'This afternoon my office has been bombarded with calls regarding Morrison, I think because he was named by Edwina Currie at the weekend as having inappropriate sexual relations with teenage boys.

'I’ll say more when I can but this may not be for some time.'

Fleet Street routinely nurtures a crop of untold stories about powerful abusers who have evaded justice. One such is Peter Morrison, formerly the MP for Chester and the deputy chairman of the Conservative Party. Ten years ago, Chris House, the veteran crime reporter for the Sunday Mirror, twice received tip-offs from police officers who said that Morrison had been caught cottaging in public toilets with underaged boys and had been released with a caution. A less powerful man, the officers complained, would have been charged with gross indecency or an offence against children.

At the time, Chris House confronted Morrison, who used libel laws to block publication of the story. Now, Morrison is dead and cannot sue. Police last week confirmed that he had been picked up twice and never brought to trial. They added that there appeared to be no trace of either incident in any of the official records.

He was named at the time of the original arrest in May (which is why people know the name to spread around, and why I know who it is) but most references to this have been redacted and is now deliberately NOT being named. He's 17 now, I think was 16 at the time of the alleged offences.

lex pretend, Thursday, 25 October 2012 08:33 (eleven years ago) link

Agreed. It wasn't me that brought it in, but I can see how with no other details someone could make a connection to 'BBC actor in sexual assault'. The politician referred to by Tom Watson (if I'm making the right connection) is also a completely separate and unrelated case.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Thursday, 25 October 2012 08:36 (eleven years ago) link

Or rather, there has been an unrelated accusation against a senior Tory politician. Tom Watson obviously is a fan of David Icke, as he has long held this chap was at the heart of a secret Tory paedo cabal, but I'm unaware of any other rumours or suspicions.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Thursday, 25 October 2012 08:42 (eleven years ago) link

Watson's contribution was really unhelpful. The accusations against Morrison appear to be unrelated, possibly not even criminal now, and clarifying it was someone else he was talking about just gives license for speculation. The names being linked have either been the target of completely outlandish conspiracy theories or simple homophobia for years .

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Thursday, 25 October 2012 08:59 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that BBC article doesn't actually mention that it's a BBC actor, so not sure why it was brought in here, but since AG seems keen on identifying people I thought I'd give him a hint. Now you mention it, I think I remember the actor in question being named about something earlier in the year.

ailsa, Thursday, 25 October 2012 09:02 (eleven years ago) link

ShariVari otm - the Morrison thing seems to be stuff that wouldn't be criminal now; alternatives offer free rein for homophobes/conspiracists to make suggestions about any ranking Tory they've thought might be gay.

CG&T, your insults are unacceptable and I've already objected to the way you're tailgating me on this thread, so take this opportunity to pick on someone your own size.

horrible story from creepy ex-radio 2 dj ed 'stewpot' stewart's autobiography but the pay-off is 10/10:

‘I walked up and down the Reeperbahn [Hamburg’s red-light district], ogling the girls in the windows, until I saw a blonde I really liked the look of.

‘With my bundle of marks in a rather sweaty palm, I went through the door and into the boudoir of Tamara, hoping that we weren’t going to be performing in the window as well.

‘It was all over in minutes — she hardly drew breath. “Tamara never comes,” I thought idly as I was ushered out of the door, off to the airport and home to England.’

There is no suggestion that any allegations of paedophilia have been made against Mr Travis, but two women have come forward in recent weeks claiming he groped them during the 1970s and 1980s.

One of the women, who was aged 17 at the time alleged that Mr Travis had invited her into his studio in 1977 and put his hand up her skirt.

What is the chance of actually being charged with this 3 decades later?

pandemic, Thursday, 15 November 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

Flight of fancy time: DLT has been accused, recently, of this.

Maybe, he has sent letters via lawyers about this, possibly demanding retraction/apology from the accuser(s).

So, they have to either make the apology, or take it that stage further.

All of this is conjecture, obviously.

I can remember seeing in my house when I was a child, in fact it is probably still at my mother's house - the hoarder she is! What really saddens me is that my mother and all her brothers came from the 50's Dublin care system and had seen it all before

And of the allegations against Sir Jimmy Savile, Jim said, “Hmmm. I knew… and didn’t do anything.”

He added, “Mind you, I had no proof. To me he was just another pervert. There are lots of them in showbiz.

“There seems to be more gay ones than straight but that’s because there are probably more gays in showbiz than most professions.

“Who’s next to be the victim of a media feeding frenzy? I have the answer to that…

“But, like Jimmy Savile, it’s only rumours. But when these rumours come out… WOW!”

He also slammed the BBC over Monday night’s Panorama, which looked at the corporation’s failure to expose Savile and his alleged child abuse on the broadcaster’s premises.

He wrote, “How come the BBC can make a programme blaming the BBC? It’s like having yourself arrested and then being your own prosecuting barrister!

“The BBC has finally gone mental.

“This hot bed of leftyness has asked itself the question: ‘Should we have known?’ The answer is ‘yes’. We all knew, didn’t we?’’

There is absolutely no sense in which Jimmy Saville would be or was otherwise forgotten about.

There is a sense in that I don't remember him having been on TV much at all for quite a few years prior to the Theroux doc - do correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe the subsequent effect of that show made Savile's profile throughout the 90s seem slighter than it really was (was even Hugh Dennis was on TV much in the late 90s to be leading the regular impressions of him? that feels like a more recent (ie post-Theroux) revival).

nashwan, Monday, 21 January 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

Well yeah, his flagship Jim'll Fix It ran 75-96, but it would not have been wise to bet on a random collection of people greeting a Saville impersonation with blinking unrecognition. Which obviously is partly his work - he was first and foremost a cartoon, and happiest that way.

Neil S, Friday, 22 February 2013 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

In a previous incarnation I got taken through their incident management set-up, which is as batshit and militaristic as it sounds. tbf, GE didn't 'crown' himself Gold Commander, this was the infrastructure. The structure seemed to me to have several misconceptions built into it:

1. A sort of cargo-cult attitude - if we take on military structures that will allow us automatically to respond 'better' to crises. When this was set up they actually got military advisors in to talk them through how it worked iirc. Of course there are a couple of fundamental errors here - that your response isn't always based upon the combined celerity, accuracy, experience and decisiveness of the people making the decisions, and the skill of the people who carry out those decisions. Further more, as will be obvious to anyone who has any inkling of the military, it's not for nothing that acronyms like SNAFU and FUBAR found their environmental niche or were born in times of war amongst soldiers, so consistent is the mixture of chaos, fuck up and confusion. This leads to...

2. The only way the BBC could possibly be bedazzled by such a honking sack of idealised shit as this cockamamie wargames crap is because their own structures were and are so inimical to the actual execution of anything that even Paul Ince's <----- SHOOT looks like genius gordian knot cutting in comparison. The workflow is Stygian. The combination of BBC's origination in civil service style structures, and later innovations upon a them, most famously Birtwhistle's deranged spreadsheet cost-benefit culture produce an organisation where processes are not designed to deliver anything but themselves. It is the case that processes have a curious non-sentient self-preservation inherent to them. Frequently, where they don't work properly because they are not suited to the 'bound variable of reality', they require extra amounts of tweaking or further inadequate processes, which requires further management. Decision making can be best represented by the nightmarish receding of the end of the corridor in a dream where you are being chased. It goes something like this.

Someone somewhere thinks something is a good idea - usually EFFICIENCY ----> a very, very large group of stakeholders are brought in (large because it's the BBC, and EVERYONE has an interest), usually with highly paid external consultants from KPMG and the like ----> an analysis is done comparing current processes to the cost-benefit to be had from the idea (increasingly diffused - 'idea' is meaningless by this stage) ---> many many more meetings will be had with increasing numbers of stakeholders each of whom is consulted, and naturally each of whom has a different set of concerns and interests ----> in the interest of politics and 'internal consultative decision making' each of those concerns is addressed by making adjustments to the original concept so that it becomes both unrecognisable from the original idea (good or bad) and one of two things happens - the idea is decided to be a bad idea all round and ditched (good tho a massive waste of time and money), or it's taken up, only it's even more inefficient than the processes that were previously in place, and requires extra management from each of the stakeholders etc.

Gradually you have a procedural behemoth that is incapable of procedure.

To simplify, I compared the process-style recently to a friend:

"It’s like they ran an apple orchard, and are looking to move into oranges groves, but their stats only produce questions like ‘But where are we getting the apples from?’, ‘Hang on, how do we get apple trees to produce oranges?’, ‘We have a problem – we need to get rid of 30 apple pickers, but then we need to recruit 29 orange pickers and although that's an efficiency it'll cost more – I think we should stick with apple pickers,’, ‘That means we need to stick with apples’... then ‘why is no one buying our oranges, whose dreadful idea was this?’

*apples rot on boughs*

As you say, the fogginess around time, money and resourcing is absolutely staggering."

The BBC has become p much a tiny core of outsourcing/contracting, and it's a remarkably inefficient outsourcer, with all the worst excesses of civil service bureaucracy and compliance (often with the best of intentions), and the worst parts of free-market competitiveness. It's utterly grotesque, and frankly, given the quality of most of its output totally disproportionate to the final result, which is frequently total shit.

All this produces the insanity of Delivering Quality First, the most naked asset sell-off and cuts agenda it's possible to imagine.

I grew up with the BBC still having a crypto-authoritarian moral cache, but if that ever meant anything, it's total baloney now. I loathe Murdoch and Sky, and the heavily politicised anti-BBC environment that has brought these circumstances about, but find it almost impossible to defend on its own current terms.

fizzles tics (Fizzles), Saturday, 23 February 2013 13:08 (eleven years ago) link

oh the other important thing that stems from this vast Heath-Robinson inadequacy is a lack of individual accountability - where the decision-making is delivered not by department but by politburo committee, the notion of responsibility gets diffused. ideal for managers innit.

That's true. All he did was abused his position of power to coerce subordinates into doing something that wasn't allowed, and that he'd taken a very public stand opposing. Allegedly.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:06 (eleven years ago) link

If the allegations are true he has clearly abused a position of power and it may even have been illegal but as this point he has not been "accused of sexual offences". I think that's quite an important distinction - I certainly wouldn't want people on the Internet incorrectly claiming I had been accused of crimes.

pacing like a lion, as weightless as an astronaut (onimo), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

"Inappropriate acts" is the wording the Guardian has used, though (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/feb/26/pope-keith-obrien-english-cardinal ) - that isn't a wording which I would ordinarily associate with (say) bullying / fraud / cover-up style "abuses of power".

Also that piece says this:

[Murphy-O'Connor] also refused to comment on whether the fact that O'Brien's accusers were serving or former priests meant it represented a turning point in the abuse scandal for the church leadership.

I read this as the Guardian letting its readers know that the accusations are in the same kind of area as "the abuse scandal". Now, I have no idea about the allegations, and I don't know whether the Guardian have the faintest idea about the allegations; for all I know they're just playing a baseless innuendo game but there are clear newspaperese hints here, wouldn't you say?

Tim, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

- that isn't a wording which I would ordinarily associate with (say) bullying / fraud / cover-up style "abuses of power".

The allegations are that the acts were of a sexual nature and have been described as "unwanted sexual advances". Again, that is not necessarily illegal but would constitute an abuse of power, as it would in any workplace.

pacing like a lion, as weightless as an astronaut (onimo), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

The allegations are quite widely reported - it's claimed he felt up one priest after a heavy night's drinking, had some kind of mutual homosexual contact with another, and two more have said he came on to them after night prayers. At least one of these alleges that O'Brien used his bishopric to place pressure on them.

It's news because if true then he must be an "aberration", as he famously labelled homosexuals in 2005. He was also Stonewall's 'Bigot of the Year' in 2012 for his position on homosexuality.

The people making the allegation are not claiming illegal acts, as far as I can tell. Their objection seems to be that a man as morally bankrupt and hypocritical as they believe him to be shouldn't be in the college of cardinals choosing the next Pope.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

So a couple of years a um close relation and her husband, who honestly sometimes have a lot more money than sense or good taste, bought this huge Rolf Harris painting for their living room. They chose it for a variety of reasons I think - honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was the most famous living painter that they could think of - but other than that it matched the sofa, would be an investment for the future (they specifically said this), and also it would be a good talking point when visitors came round. Well they have one of those wishes now I suppose. And they still have the same sofa, so they're ahead of the game still right?

Though, if I could remember it, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be relating it here.

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:39 (ten years ago) link

Andrew Lancel's out of Corrie anyway, but aye, if they've ditched Michael Le Vell, Roache has to go as well.

Adamson was found not guilty, something we could maybe presume about some others here until there's been an actual trial.

you say potatooles (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:44 (ten years ago) link

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm just speculating on the application and continuity of Corrie's possible policy, which was to put Michael Le Vell on gardening leave (all scenes cut from when he was charged, and he's just been "written out" indefinitely this week) until after his trial and assuming they'll have to do the same for Roache.

(skimming upthread, yes, there seems to be a assumption about Clifford more so than anyone else)

ailsa, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:59 (ten years ago) link

Yes, people using his disabled daughter as a stick to hit him with kind of lacks class y'know? Especially when accusing him of using her to humanise himself. I think he's a manipulative prick who's cashed in on other people's misery for decades and if the allegations are true he should get what's coming but it's too easy to presume the guilt of celebs just because we don't like them.

I don't think it necessarily projects that way, even taking into account intimidation and fear of not being believed, people are probably more likely to go to the police now than in the 70s and 80s. Even if they aren't, it's unlikely to take 30 years.

i thought all these old scrotes would get away with it, due to it being so long after the fact and the grim stats about sex crime convictions. kinda shocking, but good, that stuart hall has fallen - means it all can't be spun into a 'this whole post-savile investigation was a waste of time/witchhunt'

I can't imagine the horror that some of these victims have endured and survived. The double whammy of your rapist/abuser on the television in your living room after already infiltrating your life. What they uncovered seems to be at minimum a culture of looking the other way at the national broadcaster, and at worse a sustained culture of grooming within said broadcaster.

Tarby was at a different network though, so it looks like the inquiry has moved onto a stage where they are more looking at whether tv celebrities during the 70s as a whole were exploiting their fame to rape kids and taking overlooked victims' claims seriously, finally, nearly 40 years on.

Read this in 'The Captive' by Proust just today, struck a chord:

"Lying, though it is so often deceptive and is the basis of all conversation, conceals less thoroughly a feeling of hostility, or of self-interest, or a visit which one wants to appear not to have paid, or a short-lived escapade with a mistress which one is anxious to keep from one's wife, than a good reputation covers up - to the extent of not letting its existence be guessed - sexual depravity."

Ward Fowler, Friday, 17 January 2014 13:41 (ten years ago) link

Does Proust explore the idea of lying being the basis of all conversation more in this book? Sounds interesting

badg, Friday, 17 January 2014 17:52 (ten years ago) link

well a large part of that particular volume is about the narrator's obsession with the lies that he and Albertine, his on-off love person, tell each other other, all the time, and that quote feeds into a larger theme about social duplicity and malice amongst the french aristocracy in times past - conversation in proust is p much always a snakepit of deception, snobbery, stupidity etc., all rendered as v. malcious comedy.

sorry this is a way away from rolf roache & DLT

Ward Fowler, Friday, 17 January 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

Maybe, yes. They clearly believe they have the evidence to support a prosecution but are maybe still in denial of the power of celebrity in the face of such evidence, even washed up celebrity who was never all that in the first place.

I keep coming back to that Spitting Image sketch. It is funny, but at the same time I think it plays to the false persona that Saville created for himself, that he was just a bit of a harmless loony with a lot of money. Practically every comedy sketch ever written about him prior to the allegations was the same, always showing him as an eccentric but non-threatening character who makes weird noises and runs a lot of marathons, etc - never creepy, perverted or violent. Perhaps there were unavoidable legal reasons for that, but it does feel like the media of the time was(unwittingly) responsible as for propagating the lie of the great philanthropist that allowed him to carry out his horrible deeds undetected.

God, even the title "Jim'll Fix It" has sinister implications in hindsight. I wonder how many people got "fixed" during his nightclub years?

i finally got around to finishing that savile biog i mentioned upthread after putting it down for a while out of sheer horror. it's a worthwhile read for sure but it feels frustratingly incomplete - savile was so successful at eliding the real facts about his life that a lot of obvious questions can't be answered.

it's staggering that he managed to be a beloved eccentric public figure and a longtime friend to the establishment (he was charles and di's unoffical marriage counsellor ffs) while apparently making little effort to hide the fact that he was a serial abuser - so many people seemed to know about it while it was happening.

bizarro gazzara, Friday, 5 December 2014 15:34 (nine years ago) link

For some time now, despite intimidation and threats from the Police and Scarborough Borough Council, the North Yorks Enquirer has been pursuing the truth.

We have consistently alleged that there was a major paedophile-ring operating in Scarborough from 1947 until about 2009 and that it included Jimmy Savile and Peter Jaconelli, the Mayor of Scarborough. We have alleged that his ring was the most successful paedophile ring in British criminal history, was connected to the Westminster paedophile ring, operated far beyond North Yorkshire, had international connections and was involved in trafficking and enticing young people into prostitution. It was successful because Jaconelli was protected by North Yorkshire Police, because he was a Scarborough Borough Councillor, County Councillor, millionaire businessman, Mayor, leading Scarborough Citizen who was a School Governor and ran the local Judo Club.

Operation Hibiscus, the investigation into these allegations, has now reported. North Yorkshire Police has now been forced to publicly admit that the most successful and longest-running paedophile-ring in British criminal history peacefully co-existed with North Yorkshire Police in Scarborough for forty years. It included Britain`s most prolific rapists and sex offenders Jimmy Savile and Peter Jaconelli, was connected to the Westminster paedophile-ring and operated openly with the full knowledge of North Yorkshire Police. The Force’s failure to arrest any of the members over the course of fifty years of relatively open offending, despite numerous complaints and reports, was inexcusable, a national scandal and deeply corrupt.

We believe that, over the course of its existence from 1947 until about 2009, the ring had thousands of victims and was much bigger and worse than the Rotherham or Rochdale rings.

Freddie Starr loses groping defamation case

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33477004

Comedian Freddie Starr has lost his High Court claim against Karin Ward, who said he groped her when she was 15.
Ms Ward, 56, alleges that the assault took place in 1974 behind the scenes of Jimmy Savile's Clunk Click TV show.
Mr Starr, 72, of Studley, Warwickshire, denied the claims and sought damages for alleged slander and libel.
Judge Mr Justice Nicol said the case failed because Ms Ward's testimony was found to be true, and because too much time had lapsed.

Savile revelations
The claim over the eBook related to allegations which Ms Ward had proved were true, the judge also ruled.
Ms Ward's solicitor, Helen Morris, said in a statement after the ruling that the allegation about Mr Starr was made during two interviews Ms Ward gave about the sexual abuse at the hands of Jimmy Savile.
She said Ms Ward had been abandoned by the two broadcasters who interviewed her and had been treated "disgracefully".
"It is particularly egregious for the BBC and ITV/ITN to have done so when Karin Ward put her head above the parapet to speak out about Savile," she said.

I don't think he's on anything like the same Caligula-like scale but he does constantly remind me of Boris Johnson, a similar confidence trickster using TV, media, sentimentality, charity, 'eccentricity' and a similar 'yes, I actually am a gangster' double-bluff

I think i'm going to dive in, lol a month after finishing vol 2 of Ullrich's Hitler biog!

calzino, Saturday, 9 May 2020 11:26 (three years ago) link

the dan davies book is p good tho -- unless there's a updated post #metoo edition -- it felt like he was pulling some of his punches (at least that's what i felt when i read it)

in terms of "in plain sight" saville's own "as it happens" is a good deal grimmer

lol i couldn't even finish the first paragraph of the david hare review, just take this guy's pen away forever plz

mark s, Saturday, 9 May 2020 11:40 (three years ago) link

delete "tho" which is a relic of this post when written in a different order (take my pen away also)

mark s, Saturday, 9 May 2020 11:40 (three years ago) link

Nobody give me a pen because it looks to me like tho works fine in that sentence

it implies a qualification of a fellow poster's opinion that i did not intend to make, harmless as it seems

yoikes! I can vaguely remember in the 70's when my my mum was a registered childminder he was the face of registered childminding. I know I'm not making this up because I can clearly remember some govt childminding pamphlet in the house with a pic of a black haired Savile on the cover.

saw sadowitz in a pub in ealing once, rehearsing his tour, and it was one of the funniest things i’ve seen (partly because it definitely wasn’t for a lot of the people there).

then i went to see pretty much exactly the same show at the royal festival hall (bit weird) and it felt offensive and flat.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 19:29 (two years ago) link

possibly worth noting i generally loathe comedy and esp stand up comics (numerous notable exceptions aside)

Fizzles, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 19:31 (two years ago) link

god how pompous. but i just don’t like the whole stand up comedy thing. every fibre of me resists violently.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 19:32 (two years ago) link

agree. there's just something cringe about the whole setup. an audience pays to have someone be funny for them. no wonder so many stand-up comics are assholes. i'm not sure why i don't feel this way about theater. the older i get the more my definition of humor turns to spontaneous riffing among friends.

OTM. Jerry is a magician though! I mean, literally a magician.

Bastards of Fish (Tom D.), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 20:05 (two years ago) link

You'll like this you cunt, not a lot, but you'll like it! tbf he was a much better magician than Paul Daniels and he's often made me laugh than any comedians do.
