Are You Good At Anything?

I'm not sure how many skills you are allowed to name. Just one, or as many as you have? Does anyone here have more than one skill anyway?

the pinefox, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can sing. At one point in time, I was able to learn languages really quickly. Don't know if that is still true, though.

Dan Perry, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dude, I have so many skills. I have MAD SKILLZ in fact. I can fake accents fairly well after hearing them once - indeed, when I start hanging out with non-NYers I lose my NY accent and start talking like the non-NYers, which has gained me a reputation of making fun of people, which isn't true at all. This leads to me learning languages very easily because I can do the inflection - unfortunately my memory is not as good as my tongue and I lose the languages pretty quickly after I stop using them (though I can still pick out a decent amount of Spanish - spoken or written, and I can pick out some written Italian, French and German). Speaking of my tongue, I can tie cherry stems with it - I officially have the longest tongue of anyone I know, too, which isn't really a MAD SKILL but will put me in a freak show maybe. I type nearly 100wpm. I make a pretty good cup of coffee. I can program in HTML but that's my least favorite skill ever. I'm apparently wicked good at picking up guys, though I'm not sure how I manage it. I'm an expert at self-tanning, and I'm a pretty decent makeup artist.

I also act, but since I stopped doing stage acting I just started honing my craft thru lying to everyone. It's working pretty well.

I cannot, however, sing. A note. At all. I'm the worst singer I ever heard.

Ally, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am totally untalented. Seem to have spent years trying to do stuff I'm useless at. So maybe my skill is being useless at doing stuff! :)

Paul Strange, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm very skilled: 1. I can do Rubik's Cube in 150 seconds. 2. I can whistle both inhaling and exhaling so I don't have to take a breath and the tunes lasts forever. 3. I can knot a cherry stalk in my mouth, proving I'm a great kisser. 4. I can mash potatoes completely smooth.

Thankyou.

christopher, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh my - I think The Boss was right. I HAVE NO SKILLS. Oh, no.

Though I type well, can write in cogent sentences most of the time (a skill that is lacking in the majority of folks out in the Real World, unfortunately) (present company excluded, of course), can play a bit of guitar (though I have no idea what I'm doing, and haven't bothered to try & figure it out), have been known to sing a bit (when I actually try to). HTML skillz don't mean shit no more, though. Social skills, I have a few - but, then again, too few to mention.

I guess my claim to fame is the endless amounts of useless trivia I have at my disposal. This trivia comes from my unnervingly precise & random memory. If remembering the stupidest details of an encounter counts as a skill, then there you go.

Besides that, I'm just spewing out carbon dioxide like every other person.

David Raposa, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can play badminton. And wiffle ball.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Erm... I can cook a mean curry, as I have stated repeatedly on this board. And, erm... I am quite a good bass-player. In fact, I'm a much better bassist than guitarist, which is odd, considering which instrument I play. And I am quite good at drawring cartoons which actually succeed in looking like the people they are supposed to be.

Things Paul is good at, since he is being modest: DJ-ing (well, DUH!), making omelettes (which is odd since he hates eggs) and being nice to and about really crap bands. Oh, and giving these funny back to front piggy back rides.

masonic boom, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Urk!

chris, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, Good Lord no! Don't tell them about the back-to-front piggy back rides...

I'm actually rubbish at omelettes. Kate ate a Pauled Omelette yesterday which looked horrible. Burned and everything...

Paul Strange, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a good sense of direction and time. so, I never get lost and I'm never late, now that's a good skill to have!

james e l, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can fucking dance, and I love to brag about it.

Simon, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's not dirty, you sick minded people! It's the sort of thing you'd do for a child!

Though that omelette from Sunday was rubbish, though. Not like your usual fantastic goats cheese and spinach ones.

James has just reminded me that I have forgotten to say that one of my best skills is my ability to read maps exceptionally well. I think it comes from having no sense of natural direction, I had to learn how to read maps or I'd never get anywhere.

masonic boom, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It has been scientifically proven I'm fairly incompetent at everything.

Except wasting time on ILE/M, obviously.

Nicole, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have the ability to piss off anyone I meet within 5 minutes. I am proficient in making mountains out of molehills and finding things to worry about where none existed before. I can turn a bad situation into a horrid one. I can turn a minor emergency into a full blown crisis. It appears I have no useful skills whatsoever.

michele, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I played darts for the first time ever yesterday and kicked arse. I'm also quite good at guessing people's star signs but I have no idea how I do it.

I can dance fucking and I love to brag about it!

I always know when my friend has a straight in poker.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I write poetry very well, well enough to have a couple of chapbooks to my name and to be published in more then a few zines
I cook well but i cannot bake
I am great at sex
I analyze art with the best of them

anthony, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If your friend, Otis, is the same one who called me and carried on and on for a half hour like I even know what a straight is for fuck's sake, then I'd say that's not so much a skill as it is spotting the obvious. "Everyone thought I was cheating!" Well that's because you probably were cheating, you dodgy bastard. It's what I'd do.

Ally, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I suck in bed. I'm absolutely crap at sex. But I've been told (by girls) that's I'm very good at writing porn. So there you go. Perhaps I should give Ally slash lessons over in the ILE fan fiction thread...

masonic boom, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well somebody damn well give me slash lessons cos I'm apparently the exact opposite of Kate, goddamnit.

Aha! My boss told me today that I'm only good at fucking things up and wasting time. So there. A skill.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And schmoozing Tom Jones. And getting 48 diva style artistes/B-list celebs to sign contracts behind their record companies' backs. I'd like to have seen your fucking BOSS do any of that, in fact, do anything except turn up for the champagne afterwards. I wish you'd shown me which desk was his, we could have had sex on it and left the condoms in his trash.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Paul, you must be very cool, obviously.

Simon, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm an above average footballer. I'm good at giving hugs. I can almost hold a tune. That's all I can think of.

Ally C, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can make killer mix tapes. I can drive stick shift. When there was a Sega hockey universe, I ruled it. I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue. I can swim a mean breast-stroke. And I can make the dripping faucet noise with my mouth. I rule.

'Above average'??

Above 'above average', I think.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah, but 'above 'above average'' is also 'above average'. Ha.

Josh, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ha? Ah. OK.

Josh, it must be the middle of the night where you're forging these axiological relations of yours.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

With my hours it's likely to be the middle of the night when I do anything.

But I think like that during the day, too. I said I excelled at sophistry.

Josh, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes.

Cookie, I'm not sure about your hug skills. Remember when you knocked over that plate of chips doing it? Maybe you still need more practice.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't think I do remember the chips, no. Oh dear, I was probably drunk. I'm quite good at getting drunk. Although possibly not as good as you, Pinefox.

Ally C, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sarah, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i am pretty good at music i guess, i reckon i play keyboard pretty well. i am good at singing. i have a great big voice. i am also good at talking too loud about things that i probably should shut up about. i know a lot about feminist theory and i have a very good essay-writing style. and i am a NAST-EE dancer.

di, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am improving at singing. I have good vowel sounds but I am much much too quiet. (It sounds louder from inside!) My writing is tolerable and my Latin is horrible by my standards but great by everyone else's here. Come to think of it I don't think I'm really good at anything, so I must have been made to be an aristocrat or something.

Maria, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It seems I've had two and a half months to think of something I'm good at and I still can't. Ouch.

I would love to write something in ultra-neat Latin (preferably in snazzy dactylic hexameter, or at least with some Ciceronian clausulae), just 'cos Maria's post sounded like a gauntlet being thrown down to me, but, eh, it's been too long (and I was never *that* good - or indeed any good at all - anyway).

Someone is now going to tell me that Cicero never used clausulae, but I never really got what they were anyway, I just got told that they were a good stylistic thing. I then promptly ignored this advice, 'cos using 4 different ways of saying "and" (and trying not to use enclitic -que at the end of the sentence because it's not good style, even though I always ended up putting it there anyway) and going crazy with the compound verbs are much easier ways to pick up style points...

I so miss my Kennedy's Primer. (Oh, it looks like I'm quite good at writing really long, rambly, boring, pretentious, geeky, completely off-topic posts. Yeah, I admit I can be good at inadvertantly doing things which suck, but I think that's stretching the word "good" a little.)

Rebecca, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am good at getting things down off the top shelf.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 24 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a big long rant about how everything I'm good at (cooking, writing, painting -- except I'm not good at that exactly, and sometimes I'll toss sex in) is the same thing. I won't inflict it here. Besides, I'm good at Trivial Pursuit, too, and that's totally different.

I'm a good driver (no tickets in 16 years of driving, but I still speed almost everywhere), I can cook things and not make people sick, I'm ok at my job, I'm a pretty good baseball and basketball player, and at times I've been a pretty good guitar player (I think). I'm good at darts, too (a nice thing about being farsighted!). I'm good at tooting my own horn from the looks of this post, too.

I'm excellent at being a reclusive, social outcast. Not that this was something I aspired to.

I used to think I could draw. I decided I couldn't. Decide for yourself.

I still think I can write. But I could be wrong. I do a blog. Is that writing? I've been working on a novel for a few years and making little progress. (Extract here.)

I'm good at being sarcastic and making dirty jokes. This is nothing to be proud of, I feel.

Nothing else springs to mind.

Supposedly I'm a pretty good rapper, "for a white dude" (the typical response at a mic-battle/freestyle is "damn, where'd YOU learn to rap like that?").

The special ladyfriend says I'm "a really good kisser", which is all I really care about.

You are so cute about yr ladyfriend, nickalicious...awww.

Bryan is good at unnecessarily apologizing.

I'm good at Scrabble (gygax, let's play sometime...e me or something). At various times I've been good at foreign languages (which I've mostly forgotten), cooking/baking, playing the violin. Playing well enough, anyway, that people who know nothing about music rave about how fantastic I am and want me to play at their weddings. I prefer to play around those kind of people, as I actually think I kinda suck. I'm good at photography in a super-amateur sorta way.

I'm trying to find something to say that actually sounds meaningful/interesting but perhaps I'm not good at that.

Whens "9th Mile" coming out Nick.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ha! Prob'ly never. I don't have a harrowing inspirational tale to back it up with, it would be like "hey, here's this kid from the burbs who isn't hardcore at all, doesn't even try to be, looks like shaggy from scooby doo, but what? has game!?!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nick, you and my friend should battle. You're both skinny (and tall?) white boys who gots rhymes like dimes. He makes me sick: on New Year's he made his public 'debut', grabbing the mic at a party and freestyling for like 5 minutes straight. You could see all the girlies swoon. He's obscenely intelligent and quick-witted so he gives you more than just the 'yo yo, I'm abouts to flow, this is how we go, yo yo' when freestyling. Next time he comes back from Cali I wanna go to some open mic sessions and back him on dee drums.

Two of my friends and I are "playing" our acoustic guitars tomorrow night at a club. Im nervous and let you know how it goes. A big twee jam. So I guess I'll tell you later if Im good at that.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks, Chris. That drawing is a year old... last time I attempted anything remotely serious. I did do a cartoon of myself for the blog a while ago, but ultimately I felt photos of me were funnier. :) (Well, scarier, at least.)

I've had an urge to draw something lately, but I don't seem to get round to it. I have a proper drawing desk, too -- now 18 years old and very filthy and lived in. (Mom bought it for one of my birthdays, thinking perhaps that I was a genius and would make big money and therefore needed the proper tools of the trade. *sigh*)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I bet Chris rocks the house. In that low-key twee style of course.

The other day, I saw this guy I've known for years at a pub, who was trashed, and he told me "I remember a few years back, when you [hiccup] flowed at this field party [hiccup], and got these girls all horny, and I [hiccup] had sex with both of them that [hiccup] night!" And I was like, "that's funny, I DIDN'T GET NUTHIN!" But that's okay, cuz he was puking in the bushes outside like 3 minutes later.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

hm. here's what I'm good at:

I make up songs that get stuck in people's heads.
I'm good enough on the guitar to play the songs I make up.
I can sing well if I think about it.
I can write and draw comics better than I think.
I know how to write a good love letter.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I used to do comics. Or try to. I wasn't good/committed enough to draw them myself, though, and trying to find someone good to draw my scripts was apparently futile. So I got sick of it.

Games... I was good at one game in my life, and that was Tapper on the C64. So long ago I was still in school! I got good enough that one night I got up to a million and had to switch it off. Never really played it again. I was almost proud of that.

Julia, I really don't feel that my apologies are unnecessary. I don't know if it's that I'm Canadian or just an idiot, but I always feel it's necessary. I'm trying to curb it, though. The fact that everyone around here is so talented is what brings me back.

Forbidden Forest. Really bad graphics and a ten-minute wait between rounds while loading... and the figure does this dance in the meantime that eventually comes to mean 'I've lost the will to live'...

The good old days, eh?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I remember Forbidden Forest, I loved that dance, I used to mimic it during that LOOOOOOOOONG wait. I was way too easily entertained; some things never change. *dancing in chair*

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I never made it to no "big snakey head thing"...I played the games, I was never quite "good" at them (except for Crazy Cavemen, but to be good at that game, you just had to kinda keep moving left).

It was a big red serpent head. Filled half the screen. I have a feeling it only appeared intermittently, like when there was a lightning flash or something. Am I remembering this wrong?

One of the last 64 games I bought was Bubble Bobble. Then I did something stupid and bought an AtariST.

Come on, are you really shocked?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Martin, how do you hold the paddle?

Phil, I've not played much in years, except for a bit against a girlfriend who is England's #1 in her wheelchair class, and hoping to make the next Paralympics. I used to favour the more typically European grip. For a while, I played in the more Chinese style to try to give opponents a chance, but I got as good at that. I wasn't world class at this by a long way (unlike, say, Minesweeper) - I'd probably have got my blue at Cambridge had I stayed much more than a term, as I was very probably the best in the first year, but I also once played a guy who was then the UK #3, and he murdered me. I don't think I'd have ever got nearly that good, had I kept it up.

Martin, I have NOOO idea how that works... The Chinese grip, that is. It's insane - when I try it, often I'll strike the ball at a funny angle and it'll go flying off to the side.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, it takes some getting used to, and it does give you less reach, but you can put on a lot of spin, and it's good for the really sharp defensive reaction shot too.
