Frequently Arse Question: UK Internet Service Providers

What's a good UK ISP? I've seen you can get Freeserve in a box from Dixons, but is it any good? Sorry for the coma-inducing question, but any help will be appreciated. Feel free to talk about broadband 'n' shit, I don't know much about it.

i use telewest broadband, i've had no problems with it at all. i dont know how it compares speedwise to others (in actuality not theory), but i'm completely happy with it

Are you back-in Britain, Peter?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 March 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

i've used freeserve on dialup for 18 months, and i've been completely happy. i have it on pretty much 24/7 for £14/month, which seems ok to me.

Freeserve (plain vanilla, no lightning-fast neural connections for me) has just gone up in price - about £14 a month (I dunno for sure, it comes off Pam's credit card, ha ha) - but no dial-up fees at all.

Pretty reliable and they don't seem to bombard me with "Upgrade To Broadband If You Wish To Remain Human" emails any more. They did offer me some slightly dodgy software recently (we met in a skip behind Marylebone station at dawn) which was supposed to ensure a 100% connection rate, but I think my part of the bargain was yielding up more personal info than they currently have on file (and, anyway, my dial-up works 95% of time), so I didn't bother.

Oh, and Freeserve AnyTime boots you off after 2 hours, but you can reconnect immediately. Just knackers big downloads that can't be resumed.

Oh, OK, based on Toby's message, perhaps the 2-hour ejection thing is something to do with my modem.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I use NTL:home, unlimited access for £10 a month. The connection is dropped every 2 hrs, but you can redial immediately.
They also do 128k cable broadband for £14.99 but only in certain areas.

I recently swapped from BTopenworld to Freeserve, and so far I'm v. glad that I did - you get yr first three months for £4.99, and even when the price goes up it's still cheaper than BT. I seem to get a slightly quicker connection/download w/ Freeserve, too. Plus, whenever I had any dealings w/ Openworld the ppl were generally unhelpful to the point of rudeness.

I have a similar deal to toby and Michael - unlimited (well, actually a 42 hour a week limit) dial up. Mine only costs £9.99 a month though. From v21.co.uk. Sometimes have to keep redialing (usually early evening congestion) but generally fine. You get disconnected after 3 hours but can reconnect straight away. I think you can cancel with just a month's notice.
Their broadband DSL service is £20 a month or £25 (I think) if you get the modem and connection for free.

no, i just use an automatic redialling program :-)

Zen ADSL are very good.

For dial up I have www.fast4.net who do four months unmetered for £19.99. They boot you off sfter two hours though.

Thank you all very much. I had forgotten I'd even asked the question because I'm so psycho from packing/chucking away etc. Moving next week, Nick. Hooray!

Fuck Catalonia!

I don't like them either, Nick. I'm waiting for Real Sociedad next year. Take heart, Bristol Rovers, take heart!

nine years pass...

omfg i am so sick of cunting BT ruining my life on a daily basis - fucker keeps going down for no reason today, literally 5 times so far, and I AM TRYING TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING I NEED FOR WORK FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

people of london, recommend me an internet service provider that doesn't constantly do this. i've endured O2 and virgin as too, both were bad but BT is easily the worst. how fucking hard can it be to find a provider that doesn't CONSTANTLY GO DOWN? ie that does WHAT WE PAY IT TO DO IN A RELIABLE FASHION?

swear to god i am going to commit homicide on a member of BT staff one of these days.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:31 (twelve years ago) link

I've been with O2 for a year and it hasn't gone down once, but before that I was with Be and they were pretty great.

It might be a problem with your exchange or phone line itself...

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:36 (twelve years ago) link

I used to have REALLY bad service from BT until I phoned them and actually spoke to a human. He promised someone would investigate and monitor our connection. That was 2 years ago and no problems AT ALL since. I work a lot from home so use it at least 3-4 hours everyday. I take it you've spoken to them though?

mmmm, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:37 (twelve years ago) link

O2 broadband has been pretty shit for me but to be fair I think we have chronic problems with our line and their customer support has been tremendous, like far and away better than anyone else I've ever dealt with (including Be)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:50 (twelve years ago) link

we've spoken to them several times - it's a problem that predates me moving in - their suggestions have always been really basic ones that don't solve anything much, and then we have a stretch of a couple of weeks where everything seems fine and we forget about it.

it's really easy to solve in that pressing reset always solves it, but at its worst it's just incredibly annoying. anyway my housemate just spoke to someone again, they said we were on the wrong channel o_0 o_0 but given that it's jut fucking gone down AGAIN i don't think that was a solution.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

my bt broadband got a lot worse over the last while - I was working around it by connecting via an ethernet cable rather than wireless when I needed a more reliable and slightly faster connection, but that was obvs stupidly inconvenient. I've just replaced the router (had one of the old, white homehubs till now) and things are a lot better.

But yeah, abandon wireless and buy your own router aren't really attractive solutions.

woof, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 11:06 (twelve years ago) link

remember that hilarious ad in which the bt couple decide to buy a house solely because it comes with a homehub.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 11:08 (twelve years ago) link

It probably is a problem with the channel - it's not your line, it's other wireless networks in the area interfering with yours. You need to be on a channel that's a long away from the others to stop that happening.

Someone in customer service can probably talk you through making that happen but it might be better to get someone, ahem, more tech-literate to have a go at that.

two weeks pass...

POSTING HERE IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT'S THAT OR HURL THE FUCKING ROUTER OUT OF THE WINDOW OR TRACK DOWN A BT EMPLOYEE AND KICK THE SHIT OUT OF THEM

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 7 May 2012 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

BT outsource all their shit-kicking target needs now.

'scuse me, while I Rim the Sky... (snoball), Monday, 7 May 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

Also, fuck Orange. I am precisely 1.00001 miles away from the telephone exchange. That is not a justification for you to give me crap d/l speeds that yo-yo like a cab driver with a pogo stick for a right leg.
