Movies that You Feel Uncomfortable Watching with Your Parents...

...and do you get up and leave when the sex gets heavy, or do you fidgit? Do they look uncomfortable? Do you talk about it afterward?

For me, I suggested that my parents go to see "Y Tu Mama Tambien" after hearing glowing reviews, but before seeing it myself. I cringed in the theater when I finally saw it (takes a while for decent movies to make it to Central Florida), even though they weren't with me - they'd seen it the previous week and my mother's single comment was: "It was interesting." I probably wouldn't have felt so uncomfortable if it hadn't been for the sex being so damn arousing - I can handle the crappily acted/filmed stuff.

Over Xmas I watched Monster's Ball with my mom and younger brother. When "the scene" began I thought it might be uncomfortable, but it really wasn't. I dunno. I guess we're all adults now.

my mom took me to see blue velvet which was uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as being early 20s over at your new GF's parents place for the first time and watching (harvey keitel as...) The Bad Lieutenant... yikes.

almost as uncomfortable as playing charades and drawing dick van dyke out of a hat.

that's easy, just trip over the ottoman

"The Cement Garden". Not really a family film in the traditional sense.

Almost any film is unwatchable with my mum, as she's become one of those old ladies who provide a handy running commentary to anything she's watching. A friend identified this as distinct from the usual "What happened there?" stuff: it's more like audio track for the blind: "He's got a gun".

But one I accidentally found myself watching with my grandmother.

Actually I underestimated her, after all this is the woman who goes to find her glasses to get a good look at gay porn stars on Eurotrash.

Spanking the Monkey would be a bit of a no-no (SPOLIER: he screws his mother).

I've never watched a movie with my parents, nor do I ever care to. Every time I've tried my mother talks constantly. I get pissed and turn it off. So basically I would feel uncomfortable with any damn movie.

I now have this mental image of your family sitting around the tv and your mum going "what's that in his hand, oh it's his penis" etc etc

My father took me to see All That Jazz. It has a really filthy scene in it.

Once when I was a kid we got a new VCR and my dad rented Michael Winner's remake of 'The Wicked Lady' and insisted we all watch it together. Lots of sex scenes including her out of Dempsey and Makepeace doing it. My parents were silent throughout.

things involving gay rock stars or rent boys because they're getting suspicious.

In a bit of naivete, I thought it would be great if I took my parents to see Pulp Fiction (after having seen it, and thinking it brilliant). During the “Holiest of Holies” scene, I realized that that Forrest Gump would probably been more their scene.

I've gotten pretty blase about watching sex scenes with my folks. I find I am more uncomfortable watching movies that make me cry. One summer my mom rented "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Little Princess" and I was much much more embarrassed watching "The Little Princess".

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, any Wong Kar-Wai film and my dad

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

My father's famous story along these lines is that he took his mother to see Psycho.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

my mom laughed for ages about the "fur pie" joke in amelie. i had seen the film before and was cringeing as the line was delivered, but it turns out my mom has a dirtier sense of humour than i previously thought!

not sure if that's a good thing ...

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"fur pie" = surrealism's most enduring foray into the popular lexicon?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything. My mother is an idiot.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My mum usually watches dirtier movies than I do, though I do have trouble with graphic sex scenes and my dad. Good thing they live an ocean apart.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

private benjamin for the bit where they start talking about having an orgasm.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

haha back when my grandma wz still alive she used to like to watch videos w. mum and dad, and they were looking round what the shop had — small local country grocers w. a video service — and there was a film with julie walters in, and mum and grandma both liked julie walters, so they got that

it was a film called "car trouble" in which the main polt-point is that julie is having sex w.her lover in the back of the car when he outs his back out and they are stuck locked in coition bcz , and eventually the fire brigade have to cut the roof off to rescue them, and then it's her husband's car not the lover's...

anyway grandma was 90 and mum and dad in their mid-60s when they all watched this together
