classic classic classic classic classic classic

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on the girl.
As long as there are no sideburns super classic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

dud on me, cause if my hair gets under 6 inches or so, it SPROINGS up into curls.

but on girls with very thick, very straight hair (especially dark hair) cropped short, it is major classic, see 60s truffaut films for examples. i love the twiggy/edie sedgewick look, as well, but just CANNOT pull it off, which makes me very sad. my hair just won't go that straight.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i've said it before, i'll say it again, it's the most classic thing EVER.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

A white-girl 'fro would be classic? Not on me!

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to remember this same thread being up about a month ago. But I don't check past threads before posting new questions (just like I tend not to think before speaking)...

Short hair on girls. Nice. Particularly on little short girls as it exemplifies pixie-ness. But don't like the shaved head look much. And no short-on-top & sides, long-down-back mullet crap.

j-lu, i'm with you. i mean, really, am i going to have to post teenage pictures of me without my hair straightened, looking like jim reid with my scraggly white girl pseudo-fro? dud, dud, dud.

kate, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

classic and fun.

cprek, Friday, 13 December 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

My head is shaped like Charlie Brown's, I always look dumb if my hair is too short. It really depends on the person.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 14 December 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Clud.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 14 December 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Usually super-classic, excepting of course those that don't wear it well--although I haven't seen them so they obviously have the good sense to keep it long for the most part. Guys are far more oblivious as to whether their hair length is working for them or not.

webcrack (music=crack), Saturday, 14 December 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

unbelievably classic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 14 December 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

pointy microcephalic heads with no hair on em are best

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

k-k-k-k-k-classic

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

most classic if face can pull it off. dud otherwise.

colin saunders, Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

dear chan,

please cut your hair

thank you

love, ron

ron (ron), Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

So . . . I am getting my hair cut on Friday and I'm thinking of going short like really short. I don't know if I have the guts though or exactly how to get it cut. I really really want to do it but I'm nervous!! I am worried my face it too round. I guess if it looks like shit it doesn't really matter because it'll grow but still. Ack!!

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

I don't want to look like a boy though. idk what to do. suggestions? halp!

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

Try out this incomprehensible hair simulator website!

Short hair on girls is soooooo classic. As long as it's not a "mom-do", if you know what I mean.

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

I know!! The problem is I'm afraid the stylist lady will wind up giving me some horrible mom haircut and then I will cry. Ahhhh.

OK, I am totally doing that site right now.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)

How short is your hair right now?

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

F'rinstance, I always thought Amy Adams was cute, but her look in Julie And Julia is just ridic (in the best way possible):

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

And would you need to use more products with short hair? are you opposed to more hair products if that's the case?

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

x-post - it's a little below chin-length which is pretty the length that it always is. No, I'm not opposed to products.

OK what language is that site in? This may take a while to figure out.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, I think it's Finnish! You may be able to find a translator on the board!

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

Remembering a photo you posted here, I would say go for it. It would look cute on you. When was the last time your hair was really long?

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

You know, yes: I can imagine that short hairdos on women are about the hardest thing for a stylist to get right. There's such a fine line between cute and mom. Plus, it seems like it'd be really hard to know for sure what your hair in particular is going to do when it's short. It follows a whole new set of physical laws than the ones that you're used to, pretty much.

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

Really long . . . when I was 14!! I'm not really a long hair type person.

Ok, trying this site.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

Here's the mostly translated site, for what it's worth.

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

My mom has long hair, but I'm trying to imagine a typical short hair mom cut.

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

Here's another simulator that actually looks better. I kinda want to try it to see what I'd look like with hair period. Ha!

Jacob, lookit here:

Smash! Crash! Bash! Mash! Come and get it, human trash! (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)

That almost counts as a mullet. My mom is an ex hippy so her hair hasn't changed since I was....born.

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

lol hippie I meant.

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

FWIW, I found that mega-short hair on me with my square, wideish face wasn't a look I liked too much. I have a short bob, but I dont think I'd ever go back to a cropped cut like these. Its hard to know if it'd suit you E, just musing on my own face shape!

Spy in the Cab Sav (Trayce), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

OK I found a different website and IT'S AWFUL but LOOOOOOOOOL look at my awesome new hair:

As bad as the site is, I'm thinking maybe I can actually go short? hmmmm. Fuck it, I think I'm going to do it.

I am so deleting that picture in about 5 mins, btw. Also, haircut will not look ANYTHING like that - hopefully.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I think I might go for it. O_O

If I don't chicken out, of course. lol.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

tbh I don't find short-hair on girls attractive. if they're a cute girl, they'll still be a cute girl w/ short hair, but I can't think of a situation where I wouldn't prefer long hair.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

I think I'm drawn to girls with longer hair, but really it doesn't matter. It's always that something I can't define that attracts me to a girl.

Y tú, y tú, dime lo que bailas! (daavid), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

I think there's some evolutionary reason or something why short-hair is just sorta less physically attractive? a quick google search seems to support that. it's like big boobs or something. I dunno, it's not something that's worth basing your life decisions on - it's just a more or less constant that from a purely physical POV, most guys are gonna be more attracted to a girl with medium-long hair.

iatee, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

(seems to be cross-cultural too)

iatee, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

Daavid no I am not a mod . . . yet. ;-) I deleted them at the source.

I think there's some evolutionary reason or something why short-hair is just sorta less physically attractive?

I think it's probably less evolutionary/biological and more sociocultural. The big boobs/full lips thing is a sign of fertility but I'm not sure that is true w/ hair. I could be wrong though - it might be.

idk - I have never been a long hair type person it just feels weird and wrong to me if my hair is much past my chin. Actually thought about growing it and two days ago declared I was going to do so but I just can't. It's driving me nuts.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:36 (sixteen years ago)

errr Lechera

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's probably less evolutionary/biological and more sociocultural.

Think so too. It may just be that for some men, what's attractive are qualities regarded as feminine in our society, simply because we're conditioned to like them. I know it makes me slightly uncomfortable to see women wearing something I identify as masculine, like ties. I'm not saying it's wrong and it's seems pretty clear that a lot of men don't see things the same way though.

Y tú, y tú, dime lo que bailas! (daavid), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, that's basically what I was thinking too. Even if it's not a conscious thing I would venture to guess that many men equate long hair with femininity and short hair is sort of automatically the less desirable option on a woman for them.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

Erica IMO that hair is not way ridic short. I had hair like that once and I loved it x1,000,000 – it's way easy to style & you can do so many difft things with it (and pretty quickly, too). You are so smokin' smoulderin' hot you cld really do most anything w/yr hairs but I think it would not only look COOL, but also GOOD. And if you didn't like it it wld grow out to a length/style closer to the one you have pretty darn quick, defs in time for holiday pics w/the fams.

I say you do it!

chillbigail ate a chill banana (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

http://www.evolutionpsychology.com/research_2.html

Three evolutionary hypotheses were tested (covering hypothesis, healthy mate theory, and good genes model), of which good genes model was supported by our data. In the light of this theory, those individuals can afford the high costs of long hair who have good phenotypic and genetic quality. In accordance with this hypothesis, we found that only long and medium-length hair had a significant positive effect on women’s attractiveness, the other hairstyles did not influence the evaluation of their physical beauty. Furthermore, these two hairstyles caused much larger change in the dimension of health than in the rest of dimensions. Finally, male raters considered the female subjects’ health status better, especially if the subjects were less attractive women.

In another recent study we found that the physical appearance of long-haired women was highly rated, regardless of their facial attractiveness being judged high or low. The advantageous hairstyles improved the image of health only for women who have disadvantageous facial features. Furthermore, hair condition – quality of hair – does not seem to correspond with physical attractiveness; beautiful women were not more likely to have strong, stuffed, healthy scalp hair than less attractive women, as the redundant signal theory expects. All of these results seem to support multiple fitness theory rather than redundant signaling theory. If scalp hair and facial features signal different or even opposite aspects of physical attractiveness, their interplay brings about a huge variety of physical appearance that are, nevertheless, limited by the subjects’ reproductive interests. It was revealed that less attractive women are more likely to have long or medium-length hair, whereas more attractive ones seem to change their hairdos more frequently. These results suggest that women deliberately – although not necessarily consciously – opt for a particular hairstyle, or change their coiffures in a way that helps them to shift to a category of more valuable and desirable mate (Bereczkei and Mesko 2006).

(this is not an argument to not get your hair cut ENBB - I just think that there's more than a sociocultural bias towards long hair. you don't even really need studies to prove this, if you think about how girls have long hair and guys have short hair in a majority of cultures across the world)

iatee, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

what happened to yr eye?

I had a black eye once. Not so fun!

Wait we're talking about short hair on the head right? Because obviously I'm not voting for long hair below the belt.

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

one horrible time, many years ago, i volunteered as a hair model for hairdresser who needed a 'razor cut model'. she explained that i could pick the style, it just needed to be a cut that involved a razor, so we settled on a 'do that meg ryan was sporting at the time (kind of a choppy pixie bob type of thing). 6 weeks later i turn up for the cut at the school. she doesn't have pics but says she knows what she's doing.

1.5 hrs later i looked like kate gosselin or whatever her name is. not kidding. i was so fuckin traumatised. there are pics somewhere, but not in this country.

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

does anyone remember when that was a lesbian haircut? those were the good days, for lesbians.

cosmic abbigong (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 03:49 (sixteen years ago)

Seems more of a black girl haircut than a lesbian one to me, the Kate Gosselin geometric thing.

I can imagine that short hairdos on women are about the hardest thing for a stylist to get right.

It is imperative that you go to a male hairdresser! I had a pixie 'do for years, and the guys tend to be much better at giving you a nice wash'n'wear style that grows out better. Female hairdressers get kinda fussy with short hair.

I have long hair now, for only the second time in my life, and I think it's a lot less work than super-short hair. Short hair has to get wet everyday.

But you should still go for it, Erica! It's supercute!

kate78, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

I've always thought one needs an elfin face to rock a really pixie cut.

Sunny, no. 3 of your hair simulator pics looks exactly like the interior designer who did some stuff for our flat! She's now dyed it dark though.

I had a short-short haircut for a year or so (had looooong hair all through school, then cut it to shoulder length which was the worst length for my face, then urchin-style bob, then Zoe-ball style crop). On good days it looked ok but I didn't have the best styling products then, just lots of wax, so it got weighed down and did always need cutting.

Also I don't think I have the most feminine of faces so perhaps it wasn't the most flattering.

Now I have a classic bob with fringe and don't think I'll ever change. I absolutely hate having long hair down my neck now (it's not long enough to tie back).

just go out somewhere. she can't constantly scrutinize it if she's out in public and doesn't have to look at a mirror every time she walks past the bathroom or whatever. that's the thing about having something wrong with your face/hair/head. you don't have to look at it because it's on YOUR HEAD. (this applies to zits, rashes, bad hair, whatever)

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 26 October 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

harbl, you seriously wash it straight away? i won't even touch my hair for at least two days after a haircut because I know it's not going to be that fancy-looking again for the next two months or more. i just get mad grumpy from having had to look at my own horrible face in the mirror for like half an hour, and being told off for having split ends or having cut my own hair or going grey or whatever i've done this time.

horseshoe, Monday, 26 October 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

one of the stupid things about having a dramatically short haircut is even if you attain a reasonable state of mind about how it's not such a big deal, soon enough you run into someone you haven't seen in a while and they have to say something and you have to act really happy about it because otherwise you put them in the awkward position of having to excessively compliment it and it is kind of exhausting. that's no one's fault, though. this is not really a helpful observation, i guess.

Michelle Williams:

"I've really grown into it - I feel like myself with short hair. And it's been a really long time since I had long hair, five years...

Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it."

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

i am probably influenced by the person i'm currently seeing, who has hair about an inch long

CLASSIC

Z S, Friday, 24 February 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

when my hair was an inch long it was like wearing a magical invisibility cloak
kinda fun for a while, but tedious in the long run because it always looks the same

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. It isn't really short. Just my normal chin length again. I think my stylist is a short hair hater. :(

wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

I have a round head with no really defined edges, so hiding the sides of it with hair around my face is a great idea. Never going back to long hair again probs, but I'm never going matchstick short either. If I had a great jawline and cheekbones I might why because it seems like the easiest thing in the world.

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

last time i got my hair cut i said to the stylist "short?" and he wasn't really into it, so he cut it sorta-short but not really. i thought it was okay cos from the front it's p cute - it curls around my face, which i think works with my fat cheeks - but i caught sight of the back of my head in a changing room mirror and it's just kind of an indeterminate-looking mess at this length, and i am discontented. should have gone shorter! i might go* and whine at him about it.

* odds are i won't

inspector george gentlyfallingblood (c sharp major), Friday, 24 February 2012 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

I think hairdressers are probably gun-shy about going short-short on clients bc of potential for 'omg why did you cut it THAT short?" etc. I usually try to show them how short I mean by 'short', and tell them I've had it that short before, I won't freak out etc.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 February 2012 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

pplains, Saturday, 25 February 2012 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

Can't believe I've never chimed in on this thread before, I am a huuuuge advocate for short-haired looks on ladybabes. Probably based on a "90s HOT" influence, cf. the Winona phase that milo z posted, but whatever, it's classic. I used to ONLY crush on girls with these kind of butch tomboy haircut things; in recent years I've been trending a little more towards the femmey looks but still not much longer than chin length, typically.

Dunno how much of it is the striking look of a clearly-drawn haircut (comic book/graphic design influence), how much is the implied lifestyle hiptitude of the girl (shaky metric at best obviously, but these things operate at a lower order of consciousness, sort of like thinking girls who smoke look REALLY COOL even though it means nothing), and how much is the short hair showcasing the chin-line and cheekbones and so on. But classic.

These threads are always weird because I never know the gender and/or sex of anybody on this board whose display name isn't a giveaway. It's like, woah!

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 25 February 2012 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

maybe that's shorthand that you're in the future. crew cuts for everyone.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 25 February 2012 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

I regret my short haircut of months yore but it's because the guy who did it did such a Z-grade butcher job on it. And when I got it trimmed I got it done by my mom so it didn't start looking awesome after that. Short hair on girls sometimes reminds me of elderly women. It seems when women reach a certain age, long hair is taboo, which I've never understood. Also long hair can be made to look short, tie it up. Short hair is just short. Though chin length is nice.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 25 February 2012 02:00 (fourteen years ago)

elderly women are women too

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Saturday, 25 February 2012 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

Yes I know, I love my Grandma's short hair.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 25 February 2012 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

I cut my hair shorter than I liked for a guy because he didn't like long hair and convinced me that I would look better with short hair and bangs. I thought a change would be nice. I didn't go too short, just to my chin and had a Prince Valiant page boy that I ended up hating and just wore "hip" pigtails until the bangs grew out, then I kept it that length until we broke up. I will never again cut my hair for anyone. Although, I did get carded more during that time and in general people thought I was a good ten years younger than I was which is why I think I kept it up.

*tera, Saturday, 25 February 2012 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

E, your bob is a bit similar to mine except I like it cut way short at the back while still keeping a 'line'. There's a very narrow margin for my hair length to look good - too short or too long by 1/2 cm and it looks super unflattering. That cheekbone-length bob thing is awesome but I think very few ppl could pull it off.

if someone pooped on your arm, you wouldn't be ok with merely wiping it off with a paper towel. you'd probably want to wash it with some soap and water at some point in the near future. but yet we're ok with wiping our asses with toilet paper and walking into a business meeting.

all i'm saying is that i think i want a bidet for my birthday. ok, back to haircuts, sorry.

Z S, Sunday, 26 February 2012 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but the two cheeks hold in the bad stuff - I think you want to imagine what would happen if somebody pooped into your armpit

flagp∞st (dayo), Sunday, 26 February 2012 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

hold on, still imagining

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 26 February 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Our Lhasa Apso Chop-Chop used to get poop on it's but hair all the time. It was so gross. Those dog owners are geniuses imo.

I have been tempted w/the short hair to bleach my hair again – last time I had it this style + blonde everyone called me Abb13 Warhol, which was awesome. I don't think I can be blonde in AZ w/out invoking BREWER SPIRIT tho.

well i probably won't get the guts to do it, and if i do, i'll be miserable about after a week, but i am certainly feeling the urge!

just1n3, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

i think that would look good on you!

tehresa, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

although i think i could pull it off better now then i did last time i had it super short - i was totally incapable of styling it in anyway, something which i'm way better at now.

just1n3, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

although i think that girl needs a different hair color because that ashy blonde is not well-matched to her skin tone at all.

tehresa, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ althoughs

tehresa, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

there's a mail-order eyeglass shop that lets you "preview" how their glasses would look on your face --
isn't there something similar for hair?

Not really a fan of short hair on girls but it is girls' decision to make, so good for them

see that's not even short hair to me
short is like SHORT cannot tuck behind ears short

short is like SHORT cannot tuck behind ears short

this is my take, really. ENBB's hair is shorter but not really short hair

my hair is relatively-average-male length but has been longer than my sister's twice in the last few years!

valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 27 February 2012 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

I agree as well but many people wouldn't. To me short hair is the pixie cut pic I posted upthread 2 years ago.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 27 February 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

pix or it didn't happen

If I can ever get over my "Don't look at me, I'm hideous!" attitude towards photos, I will.

This would have been a really useful infographic to hand to my barber a few months ago, when I finally chopped all mine hair off.
