Poor Little Rich Girl CoCo Vandeweghe on Naomi Osaka: "The fact that she's won matches at slams surprises me." And that is why you will not be missed, CoCo. Thrilled that Osaka sent her on her merry way in r1.

One point shy of three British men in the last 16. I'm not sure that's happened in the Open era - maybe during the ATP boycott (Wimb '73) or maybe Chris Wilkinson strung three wins together in the Tim'n'Greg years.

Just watched highlights of Venus on Eurosport website; she won one and two and almost every point in the highlight reel was one she lost. Bit too Euro.

Djokovic goes into Edmund match with 30min competitive court-time in the last five days. I'm not sure what this means. Rusty? Rested? Probably wins in three anyhow.

Gah. I was thinking this was a bit like McEnroe in '79 (John Lloyd withdrew from a 3rd round match after a marathon vs McNamee the previous day, Eddie Dibbs retired from their quarter-final three games in), when he only had to complete five matches for his first Slam. But it's now worse. I guess this was at least a best-of-three win.

have you ever even read The Drudge Report? Have you gone on Stormfron (k3vin k.), Thursday, 8 September 2016 05:08 (seven years ago) link

Didn't realise that Monfils has *never* defeated Nole :/

A couple of 3rd-set tie-breaks (Paris 2009, Montreal 2014) and a five-setter right at the start of their careers (USO R1 '05), but mostly a catalogue of beatings. Stan and Kei have beaten Nole at Slams, of course.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 8 September 2016 10:27 (seven years ago) link

Woulda been happy with either Stan or Delpo. So excellent to see Delpo competing at such a level again! No shame in going down to Stan in the QFs like that.

On the kit front, all the Nike people (on men's side) are now out so we don't have to suffer the yellow and black attack any more! Hated it.

i only caught the last couple of points of the set, but my guess is that once monfils fell behind he started playing purposefully erratically, basically tanking the set, in order to 1) conserve energy and/or 2) serve first in the second set

OMFG what a point

he's playing very...casually. his shot selection has been pretty bizarre. even for him!

tennis is exciting!

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

lol otm

johnny crunch, Friday, 9 September 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

it's clear that monfils feels he needs to junk up the match a little because he knows he'll never outslug djokovic from the baseline (he's something like 0-12 in his career against him), but i'm not sure djokovic is the kind of player these little chip shots are going to work against. he's just too solid and too mentally strong

omg this lil fans that those ppl had plugged into their phones

can't watch rn but yes to the mcenroe stuff. he gets relentlessly negative some matches. it gets to be a bit much. during the nole-dimitrov it was obvious cliff was getting annoyed with it too in the booth. kept pulling him back to center.

oh i'm watching doggy

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

this is the most monfils set of all sets

like sometimes he just doesn't give a shit? i'm having a tough time following without sound

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

he does do that a lot, but he's been pretty focused this set! i mean the general roller coaster nature of the set, the bizarre decision to serve and volley on SECOND SERVES against the best returner of all time, the drop shots, the court coverage, the crazy angles...this is what makes him so exciting to watch

i'm pulling for him

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

also, i am now noticing for the first time something that dfw pointed out in one of his tennis essays: the pros really do have hypertrophic serving/favored arms!

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah they're huge, any semi-serious player will have hypertrophic forearm muscles but the pros, if you ever see them in person, are alien-like

monfils is such a ham

what in the heck
