ILPhoto Gallery (a thread to show off your pictures)

Prompted by Joe on the Flickr thread on ILE.

I don't think we really have a proper picture thread, so this is it. Link to stuff you fancy showing off on Flickr, Photobucket, your own website, wherever. Invite constructive criticism, show us what you're up to lately, technical compare'n'contrast, ask for advice or just make people jealous with your holiday snaps/studio images of beautiful people. Anything goes as long as it's a photo you* took. SFW is a good idea too, I s'pose.

(* or partner, kids, close personal friend...)

I know these threads become browser-killers in time, so we can perhaps have ILP Gallery 2: Amusing Sequel Name, etc in the future.

Aside from needing pictures of the B&B from all angles, different rooms, etc., the only thing I was told was that Brian (the owner) desperately wanted photographs of the house chicken salad. It was the best salad ever, blah blah blah. Watched the chef make it: greens from Costco, frozen chicken reheated in the microwave. FANCY.

I'm not sure you're going to get any repeat business from these people, Milo. Great work, though. Boy, they've stretched it thin..."Longhorns and landscape" shares half of its photos with "Fly-fishing" and the same ones appear again in "Kayaking", etc. Bless 'em.

Not sure I can share stuff I've done "professionally" (and those are massive inverted commas), but these are a couple I did for a friend's website about six months ago (and this thread reminded me to put them on Flickr). Not great but, y'know, it's nice to work to a brief for a change.

the pix here are all lovely but michael jones is some sort of insane photography mentalist. both the london bridge snaps, of a station i've seen thousands of times in my life, are wondrous and deeply resonant to me. four lights in a row in the night one are basically god's judgement peering out of the sky and saying 'we see you'. and joe you did extremely well to find that monument on a day that cloud was there :D

Electric Universe (wherever that is) (acoleuthic), Friday, 8 January 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago) link

You're very kind, sir. I don't think I'm much of a photographer really - just a snapper who geeks out a bit on the gear and has a modicum of technical nous. I'm in awe of the real talents/people who do this for a living (and there are a few on ILX, I think).

We probably need more people shots on this thread but I know how tricky that is. Even my own children hide from the camera these days.

ok, one from the recently purchased Minolta that came out nicely:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2757/4366407575_d64a0954e7.jpg

I'm lucky that I took a couple non-flash photos this night, since the flash and shutter were apparently out of sync the whole time, leaving me with three nearly blank rolls! I mostly shot at 1/60, which is maybe too fast for a camera from the early 60s? I know a lot of them defaulted to 1/30 for flash photography but thought I could shoot a little faster with no problem. The manual I downloaded doesn't actually specify exposure time for flash (which on this camera connects via PC cable).

Some pretty fast film then yeah? Lookin pretty good.
What camera were you using? And have you shot much low light stuff with film of that speed? Kinda interested in trying some higher ASA film for nightime/indoor stuff.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Canon EOS 10 - a 1990 film SLR which I picked up for nothing a couple of years ago (having been spoiled by autofocus I've not gone back to our manual film SLRs as much). I did get some very low-light shots off this roll - I may try and put them on Flickr this evening. The camera has Delta 1600 in it right now.

High-speed colour film can be fun too, though the grain is a little more distracting there. This is Fuji Superia 1600 from about a year ago:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3521/3310391352_71b18b0ef3.jpg

Michael Jones, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:21 (fourteen years ago) link

tiny pedantic point, but the film you've got in at the mo - it's a delta 3200, right? as far as i recall there's no 1600 so you just shoot on 3200, set to 1600. i am basing this on always having bought 3200s and being impressed by developers who knew the setup and so developed with that in consideration.

Norman Mail (schlump), Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Ah, sorry, my mistake - it's not Delta, it's Fuji Neopan 1600. I also have some Neopan 400CN in the fridge (which can be processed as C41, so that immediately saves me at least a fiver and about 10 days' wait!), so that might be next.

Was in Copenhagen this weekend (pics to follow - a lot of weeding to do) but it's cured me of that bicycle seat photo compulsion. First shot outside the station was a Brooks seat... and then I realised that about 1 in 12 bike seats in KBH are Brooks and, in Denmark, that adds up to a whole lot.

No Photoshopping, no cropping, just a bit of contrast & exposure adjustment in Aperture and otherwise straight out of the camera. In other words, pure luck.

19 pigeons were resting on Em's parents' roof; we put food on the lawn for them, they came down, I startled them and snapped away. This was the result. It looks like time-delay superimposition of one pigeon ascending, but is three, genuinely, caught in a moment.

Found this one from my trip to SF last February. I was on the point of Alcatraz looking back, and thought what I was seeing at a distance was a fog bank rolling in.

Instead it was Noah's flood, soaked me to the bone, destroyed my umbrella - but did nothing to my Nikon thank God.

I love that.

Borrowed an ultra-wide zoom for a trip back to my old hometown recently (ostensibly to document the interior of the house where I grew up - I handed the keys back to the landlord that weekend) but any outdoor shots were hampered by relentless greyness and drizzle... But if Milo Z can cope with a SF storm...

365?

good luck with that, you'll be surprise how many people start that and give up.

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Would not be surprised at all about the giving up! It will be extra hard for me, because even when I'm shooting I tend to wait a month or more before I start editing (unless I absolutely have to get on it). Will have to get in the habit of shooting RAW+JPEG for the times when I can't put in a lot of editing work.
On the positive side, new iPhone camera is a vast improvement over any camera phone I've had before.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

My solo wedding shoot went OK, I think. I'd give myself 6.5/10.

Stuff I messed up: first dance (was totally in wrong position, using wrong lens - but got other bride'n'groom dance shots later where, with careful cropping, it looks like they're on their own), family groups (it was never part of the brief to do these but, inevitably, other guests started to get groups to form for their shots, which I tagged onto and, not being 6'4" or prepared to elbow people out of the way, my piggybacked efforts are kinda lousy). A lot of casual portraits are quite poorly framed too; mindful of retaining 3x2 aspect for printing, my crops are ending up very contrived.

Stuff I nearly messed up: the kiss; shooting the ceremony with available light with the 17-55/2.8IS, suddenly realised the metering on the last few was messed up by strong wall lights behind the couple, starting fiddling with the Speedlite settings and..."you may now kiss..." Just got it with flash.

Stuff I'm kinda proud of: all the unposed portraits with the 85L, especially those after about 8:30pm, when the light on the patio was magical. But I was only pointing and shooting - f/1.2 does the rest! The later Elvis impersonator/dancing shots - from either up on a chair or low down on the dancefloor itself, 17mm, flash and bounce card. Ceiling was mirrored, so there are crazy patterns on everything which may be ruinous but I kinda like it.

Of course, I can't post any of these here!

31C, wearing a suit, 9-hour day. Loved it.

Er, it's good but it's not that good... (/Carry On)

No, no - that shot was from the few days in July when I had one on hire for the wedding. It's everything everyone says it is. But if we're going to spend £1700 on something, an old VW Polo might be more useful...

Sorry, I was making a crude joke. Yes, it really is amazingly good. I did wonder about the 85/1.8 though, how much lighter and faster-focusing that is, and whether it gets you 90% of the image quality at the expense of a stop of speed, at about 1/6th the price. But hard to imagine using anything else for a wedding reception.

Gorgeous, not_goodwin.

It's Monday - time for a photo. We do bake-off challenges at work, so I get to practise my food photography (of the sort where you have about 2min to fire off a few shots before everyone piles in and scoffs everything). Obviously, I can't help myself with the shallow DoF... this was Pimms jelly with fruit.

these are fairly old, but I kept coming back to them in my Lightroom archive, decided to order 20x30 MPIX prints (so freaking easy and cheap to get giant prints now - the largest I could print in a real darkroom was on 16x20 paper as the color processor couldn't go larger and trying to do it in the B&W darkroom was torture)
I can't decide if there's any value to them or if I'm just weird

I don't find it very natural or easy to take photos of people myself, but I keep trying to make an effort of it. The boldest I've gotten was maybe in the following (and a few others like it) where I decided I was going to take flash photos of people on the street:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1363/5111408295_a63daf4820_z.jpg

It helps me to have a camera like the Olympus XA2 though, since it's very very unobtrusive and there is no time spent focusing or adjusting aperture and exposure time. And I just try to look like a confused tourist.

Not really, although I kinda love the video of him walking around sticking his flash in people's faces. I just realized that I liked strong fill flash and was feeling a bit emboldened. Helps to have a tiny camera.
I definitely still get kinda nervous taking photos of people on the street, and have occasionally had people get pretty pissed off. Many people really do seem to believe that you are breaking a law if you photograph them.

I've now got an Aperture 3 preset called 'Michael Jones', works a treat!

Donations to my PayPal account gladly accepted!

Funnily enough, I've never created a preset for what I (almost always) do in LR; I just react to each picture individually, but I end up doing more or less the same thing to each one (the areas of greatest variability are usually midtone brightness and the bottom end, especially if I'm shooting in low light and deliberately underexposing by 1 to 1 2/3 stops.)

Owe the thread some more pix but it's all been kids' parties and friends lately and I can't put those here. Will take the 40D out today. Otherwise, it's raiding the archives...

Does anyone have any tips/tricks for dealing with light pollution? Usually the sky in my nighttime photos comes out DARK RED. I have figured out how to kind of sort of maybe fix this in LR/Photoshop but is there a way of dealing with light pollution when taking the actual photo?

Also the light pollution thing, could be white balance, but you can alter that in Lr, so i er dunno.

agree on the new thread, tis time.

not_goodwin, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

what a moving photo, meisenfek

not_goodwin, the buildings comprise Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory. Each pyramid houses a different 'zone' of plants (desert, tropical, temperate, and a changing exhibit). It's a super place.

I did find that adjusting the w/b in LR helped with the light pollution (tbh was too cold to stand around fiddling with it while taking the photos). Though looking through other flickr photos tagged with Muttart Conservatory, I saw a couple nighttime shots that made interesting use of light pollution (here and here)

salsa shark, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

In post, aside from adjusting white balance, you could try working with the color sliders in LR - drop the red and see how that affects the rest of the image, etc.?

AFAIK, there's no in-camera/exposure solution - that's why astrophotographers basically have to be in the middle of nowhere.

it is funny to imagine that something really awful has happened to the woman in that photo above, and the reaction from you all is "the 42mm focal length is pretty ideal" and "great street grab!" and "would love to see that large on a wall"... i mean, obviously we hope nothing bad has happened, but it's kind of entertaining to read the last few posts as if they were written by cold misanthropic androids.

Oh I think that was actually more of a grimace in the sunlight than anything else (the look she made was really brief) but yeah, if you take pictures of strangers then you never know what they're doing or thinking. And if you've decided to take pictures of strangers then you're probably also inclined to take pictures of them when they're making unusual gestures, expressions, or just seem to be doing weird/different things or standing in a strange way or holding something unusual, etc. And then when all is said and done you end up with a photograph and are then ready to talk about "photographic" things, like the focal length of the lens, or whether or not you think a picture is "successful." Any narrative you imagine at that point is really going to be something of your own invention.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Like it's significant that a picture is of something that actually *happened* in a real place, but in the end it's still just a picture without time or context. It usually doesn't tell a story, but just shows the way things looked for an instant once from a certain perspective, inside a rectangle.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:25 (thirteen years ago) link

based god kwassa kwassa (dayo), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I wasn't criticising the voyeurism of street photography or anything like that! I just meant it was actually funny (for me) to pretend the woman was suffering, and then to read the comments in that context. When you squint, the comments could be read as if written by amoral technicians, enthusiastically dissecting the capture of human misery, or something. I understand full well that this was not the case! But, as I said, it was funny, and easy, to pretend it was.

I enjoy this thread, and there is a lot of great stuff in it!

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah so far I love the Leica. I have a FED 3 which I like a lot too though. I generally keep it around for B&W stuff because I have the Industrar 50mm collapsible lens which is uncoated and thus a bit diffuse looking, which means I use it to (try to) get that early diffuse Strand/Stieglietz/Steichen etc. kind of look, with marginal success. The downside with the FED is the small viewfinder and the knob advance (which yours might or might not have; they added a lever eventually). Otherwise it's a load of fun.
But I would be lying if I said that I'm not smitten with the Leica. Compared to my other (mostly compact) rangefinders, the viewfinder is large and luxurious, and is perfect for a 35mm lens. Something about it seems more conducive to just firing away rapidly too.
I also feel like a champ because I guessed the exposure for that shot. Too lazy to pull the meter out.

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

the selenium no battery ones are nice but they are very old and many of them are not accurate at all anymore

for a small lightweight one the sekonic l-208 is pretty nice, does reflected metering pretty well (incident sucks tho)

you can also try to find an old luna sbc, they are big and heavy though but def look 'cool' in a retro-techno-fetishist way

after a while you can just 'guess' exposures with your head it gets pretty easy

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link

superia 1600 is a good fast film, you can also try 800 - just remember that you want to err on the side of overexposure

i mean ive been using boots film which is fine and cheap but this was £47 for 20 36exp rolls incl. delivery

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually I used a selenium Gossen Pilot until I snapped the incident cover in cold weather. Now I use a Gossen Luna Pro (retrofitted for modern batteries) that I got on craigslist. The pilot was accurate, but as with all selenium meters it was useless in low light, when you'd probably need a meter most. Both were very cheap craigslist finds, by the way.

Terrified one of my friends will ask me to do wedding photog duties someday. Dodging it on the next one, as it would be difficult to act as officiant and photographer.

are they super easy to focus. i dont really understand rangefinders.

Yes and no. You're focusing with a yellow patch in the center, lining up two images into one. Occasionally it can be tough to tell when they're perfectly aligned for me, but no worse than an SLR up close. And if your focus subject is off-center, you have to recompose, so if you're working with a narrow depth of field you have to learn to compensate for this.

Classic rangefinder-style shooting is primarily done with 28, 35 and 50mm lenses in a reportage style, rather than close-up portraits or telephoto work - depth of field is greater, and absolute sharpness really isn't supreme. Most of the talk of the wonders of Leica glass is nonsense (to make it to print, there are too many steps along the way for that special 3D pop to justify a $6k lens) and the real magic of the system is how you can work with it, for the reasons folks have mentioned.

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

It won't sound like a normal SLR, there's no mirror to move to make the ka-chunk sound. But it's not exactly like a Leica either - the Soviet RFs used metal shutters, IIRC, that make them a little louder than Leicas.

Downloaded the trial of Silver Efex Pro 2 plugin for Lightroom 3, trying to figure out how to work with it (in terms of when to sharpen, adjust curves, etc.. Also you have to export out of LR3 as a TIFF - I'm setting it at 360dpi when I do so, because that's the native resolution of Epson printers, or it can be downsampled to 300dpi for other printing options). This is Tri-X with the High Structure setting, selenium toned.

The 'filed negative carrier' border options are kind of cheesy, I'd never use them for a real print, but I feel like a thin black border of any kind really helps photos displayed online.

not_goodwin, Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I was hankering after one of those catadioptric (mirror) 500mm+ lenses for a while, simply because they're compact, light and cheap. Seems like shooting the moon might be one of the few things you could use them for (fixed at f/8, dark viewfinder, very narrow FoV, donut-shaped bokeh, manual focus).

Think the shots I took the other night with the 135mm Zeiss were actually a bit sharper, but the lower magnification meant that I had even fewer pixels to play with and the blow-up was worse. Above photo is a 563x563 crop (0.3MP!). Certainly wouldn't print it. Maybe work as a badge?

Michael Jones, Monday, 21 March 2011 09:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I took a shot of the moon with one of my 300mm lenses last night. I was shooting in jpeg without realizing it so it's not as sharp as the RAW version would have been.
This is my favourite - a 680x680 crop (so it's fairly large):

I get this. I've barely taken any photos since October aside from about 20 over Christmas, and I only really liked a handful of them (the conservatory ones I posted a few month ago). I don't know what to do about it. Sometimes I look through random flickr photos to get ideas of what might be interesting/fun to do but it can be frustrating when I don't have any ideas of my own to pursue. So yeah, I don't know. I've taken to putting my camera on a high speed framerate and the setting where the camera uses all 51 focus points to pick focus for me when I play with River. This time the autofocus picked her saliva at the bottom of the frame (best if viewed large-ish) as the point to focus on, which seems to be entirely too appropriate.

I didn't think much of the photos on took on Alcatraz at the time (storm rolling in, everything was dull and dark) but it's looking better in B&W.

where do UK people get B/W film developed these days? i just finished my last roll, but apparently since i last shot one (2005?) snappy snaps went bust.

caek, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

You mean yr local branch of Snappy Snaps? Cos they're still going strong. Expensive though - I've only had a couple of B&W rolls developed there and thankfully someone else was paying...

I'm fortunate to have branches of Jessops and Jacobs close to where I work, so I just use them. Expect to pay £10+ though for non-C41 B&W dev/print/scan. You can probably send away and have it done better/cheaper - check the back pages of Amateur Photographer.

haha dayo, i will try jessops but if they are charging crazy money then i might take you up on that!

tbh a bit baffled about what's actually on the roll (hp5). it came from old camera that's been in storage for like 5 years. there is a photo of me taking a picture of my baby brother with it. he is now 5 and i assume that picture is on the roll, but apart from the that and the ~5 i shot at a wedding last weekend i have no idea. ha. film!

caek, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

I've just inherited a 1959 Ilford Sportsman II from a friend - it had a roll of (12 exp!) Kodakcolor 100 in it, so who knows what's on that. The lens looks very fogged so I'll run a 24exp roll of Agfa Vista 200 through it (which seemed to be the free roll of choice back when I was shooting only film, I've got loads of it - probably from Welwyn branch of PhotoOptix, circa 2000-01) and see what - if anything - I get.

I have decided to raid my hard-drive archives bung one photo per month (starting from Jan 2007) each day on my Facebook wall. No kids, no friends (those photos aren't Public on Flickr so they probably shouldn't be on FB at all). Trying to avoid stuff that I know is already on Flickr (but mostly failing so far). Millsner, Sunday, 5 June 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

Thank you Chinavision. I like the angles of gazing and the people in your picture. It is helped, anchored perhaps, by the US flag.

Increasing Flickr traffic feels like a good idea (and my traffic is probably tiny next to others here) - but is it? I always like it when people look at a picture - but then, I don't know these people, I don't get anything much from their attention, and maybe it is best to stay tucked away. I feel that increased traffic may be a false value. I suppose the truth is that I want a certain relatively small number of people to see them and be interested in them. But I understand the appeal of a bigger number.

the pinefox, Monday, 6 June 2011 08:46 (twelve years ago) link

ps / if you do want to get more people looking at that picture, I notice it doesn't have any tags. Have you considered starting with 'hot Asian babe'?

the pinefox, Monday, 6 June 2011 08:50 (twelve years ago) link

You know, I used to tag heavily but for some reason stopped doing so AND deleted most of my old tags about a year ago. Something about it just bugged me (among other things, probably the fact that my dad was such a relentless tagger that all of his photos would have things like "photography" "color" "mountain" "hill" "blue" "california" "united states" "landscape" etc.). I think seeing tags next to a picture seemed too literal and clunky! This is why only some pictures get titles too. I was also envious of people who seemed to get high viewing rates but not only had untagged photos, but had un-grouped photos.
I can tell myself that flickr stats are pretty useless, except that I do nothing with my pictures *except* put them on flickr. So that is really my only payoff. I don't anticipate ever making money from photography, so I'd at least like as many people as possible to see and enjoy a picture that I make, if it's any good.

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

I have to admit that I don't comment as much as I probably could or should. I lack words too often and just end up saying things like "nice!" or "wow!" so instead I tend to favorite pictures relentlessly.

stately, plump bunk moreland (schlump), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah the Madison Square Park piece is pretty nice! It is surprisingly disorienting to look at since that sort of spatial distortion is so completely associated with 2d pictures.
And thank you about the crossing photo! I was really into the way that woman was holding the camera. When I got the photos back I was pretty surprised at how posed everyone looked to me.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

I must admit I used to be quite addicted to the Flickr stats page - I'd like the photostream as a whole to get 100+ hits each day. If the graph dropped down to low double figures and I didn't have anything new to share I'd usually freshen things up a bit by blogging an old picture or uploading something random from the archives. (When I've just uploaded a load of kids' party pics and sent out Guest Passes, the hit count goes through the roof).

Well, now, it doesn't seem like I have to do anything to get those 100+ hits - mostly due to "unknown source" referrals. Not entirely what they are - ppl blogging my pictures? Accessing them via a phone app? Stuff like Tumblr does actually show up, so it's not necessarily that. 70% of all my traffic on a quiet day (no new content for a while) comes from these unknown sources. Any ideas?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link

I don't publicise my flickr acct much or do much tagging so when I get comments it's always kind of amazing to me. This one dude even wrote an entire POEM abt one of my pictures. That's what he does, apparently, leaves poems on pictures that 'inspire' him.

Another guy complimented my photo album full of Arshavin photoshops: "I love this series of shrugging Arshavin"

salsa shark, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

From what I've read, unknown source hits can include blogs etc. that block referral data, but also from direct hits, like from a bookmark or an email etc. I also wonder if sites like flickriver have something to do with it.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

Hmmm. I was curious because, on quiet days when I've not uploaded anything new for a while and there's no compelling reason for friends to be ploughing through my photos, instead of a total daily hit-count of around 60 (search engine hits for stuff within and without Flickr, usually), I now get a hit-count of around 150 and it's overwhelmingly "unknown source" making up the difference.

For example, yesterday (having not uploaded anything since Jun 2):
136 views - 41 within Flickr, 20 Google/Yahoo image search, 1 Facebook, 1 ohdeedoh, 73 unknown source.

Occasionally, I'll get a big spike on one image - 55 views in a day, all unknown source.

yeah there's something very satisfying about developing a roll that you shot w/o using a light meter

dayo, Sunday, 14 August 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

when in doubt, overexpose! after understanding how these films work I think you can overexpose by 2, 3 4 stops, maybe even 5 or 6 and still be okay. unfortunately scanners can't quite punch through overexposure yet but you can get good prints in the darkroom. just look at ralph gibson.

dayo, Sunday, 14 August 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yeah I overexpose like crazy. And I can compensate for at least 3-4 stops in the scanner. I just had to learn how to turn some auto detection off. That allows me to scan beyond the edge of the frame as well without everything going haywire.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 14 August 2011 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

I have sworn an oath that for one week, I will take no pictures in color, not a single one from any camera, under any circumstance. I need to take more control over my camera, and getting a better feel for the basics of light metering and reading the histogram seems like a good place to start. So this is my best shot from Day One.

The Rollei is really a whole lot of fun, and I'm telling myself now that I do not need any more 35mm cameras. At. All. I think the Rollei has got to be the last one in, and I can start shedding those that I don't use much anymore.
The advance crank swings back on its own just fine. It's also one of the more pleasing advances I've used. There is a really satisfying final click when you've pulled it out all the way. It's not smooth like a Leica, but it is fun to use. Plus, left thumb!

flickr was never my main publishing station - I have a tumblr but I am thinking about deleting it. my goal is to set up a website but I'm not sure how I'll go about doing that.

my tastes towards my own work are also changing, right now I am slowly going through all the stuff I shot last year, selecting new photos I missed and scratching photos that I don't like anymore. it's an involving process! I still scan everything I develop... it's just not stored online

markers, Thursday, 8 September 2011 02:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah gotcha... I liked your photostream so was just wondering! Can I ask where the tumblr is?
I still have nothing but flickr. Keep trying to start a website but am apparently too lazy or distracted.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 8 September 2011 02:39 (twelve years ago) link

i started scanning photos recently, never having wanted to expend the effort before, & have been so pleased with having digital copies of everything; i include one when i e-mail a friend, etc, it is nice. i put some things on flickr & though i think it's super-neat and ergonomic there was something i didn't really like about it - i think maybe i felt bad for the ones that didn't get looked at?, or were better at full size? - so i made a website in html that is just a long white page with the photos, at about-screen-size, fairly well spaced (kinda inspired by unchanging window <3 <3 <3).

mentioning all this because though i think there are some really neat & effective presentations of work online (like for example), it's hard to compute what is actually best for the photographs, & it feels like it's still being figured out, a little (i think i've heard that the history is a little more complicated, but isn't there that thing about the americans being the first photobook to frame shots in abundant white space, rather than trying to just cram as much onto the page as possible?; sorta like that). but it is nice just to have things visible online in the first place.

Carl Theodor Dreyer (uncredited) (schlump), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the question of how to present one's work is pretty tricky.

most photographers default to something flash based. I happen to like the nytime's lens blog flash site because it's quick and snappy and has a full screen mode. most other flash websites piss me off.

I am wondering what the best way to go is with designing an online website. I am tending towards giving the viewer as little choice as possible. why give them a table of thumbnails where the picture is hardly visible? bigger is generally better, pictures change dramatically as they are sized up. I like the websites that are just simple HTML sites where you have to scroll down - feels like the photographer has more control over how you see her photos.

I am bugged by websites that use horizontal scrolling, like alec soth's website. I am not convinced that that is a more natural way of paging through photographs than the vertical scroll. maybe they think that it better approximates a photobook? I don't think, as computer users, we have a built in sense of space for horizontal scrolling - vertical feels much more natural.

dayo, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

a simple html based layout is also nice because you naturally know where pictures fall in the series, can scroll back anytime you want to. you cannae do that w/ most flash based websites

dayo, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:11 (twelve years ago) link

I think editing and presentation is the hardest part of the whole process of photography. less is more

dayo, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:15 (twelve years ago) link

I like the websites that are just simple HTML sites where you have to scroll down - feels like the photographer has more control over how you see her photos.

yeah i think what's good & appealing, & feels attuned to your viewing process, about flickr, eg, is the way in which you navigate between different groups of photos, rather than the actual consumption of content; being able to seamlessly flow between the thing you started looking at, someone else's similar set, something shot on the same film, the taste of someone whose shots you like. it isn't good for a, maybe not necessarily 'narrative', but kind of intentionally impact-ing group of pictures you want to order and display & phrase in a certain way, it can just seem like a kinda facebook assemblage or travelogue. limiting choices otm! & yeah seeing things big is huge. most of the things i've got around to scanning are just the kind of fetishistic explorations of grain i have from using velvia or w/e, because it's texturally interesting to look at on screen, feels sort of different to me than seeing well presented, clear shots.

i think i agree about the innate unnaturalness of horizontal scrolling but i can still handle it, i know a few sites that work well that way. btw i was just flicking through the ruinista site i linked above, from a leica user, the pictures are great, that neat combo of making you want both someone's camera + life.

another plus about relatively unadorned, html sites is that i think there's something to utterly decontextualising your photos, like what was good about 9eyes or, maybe w/slightly more info, unchanging window. not having the affiliated acknowledgement of how they should be received or who you 'are' or what you're aiming for. this is a weird + not very good photo but it is cool for the fact that it is elliptical, i think, and i think things being visible without too much baggage aids their impact.

and my soul said you can't go there (schlump), Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

I don't consider flickr to be an ideal venue for my pictures, by any means, but I just use it because it is sooo easy and it also gives me an opportunity to throw some pictures up and just kinda see what hits. Knowing that what hits on flickr is affected by the nature of the website. Like, if I have a photo with an attractive subject centered in the frame and close to the camera, it will do a lot better than a photo that is loosely composed of many small details. I wish that flickr defaulted to a larger normal viewing size, and I wish that they'd allow some more of the interface to disappear, but that's not really what it's about I suppose.
I think that when I do finally get around to doing a website, I will do something simple and scrolling. Large images yes, but maybe not so much white space between them. I like the way that on, say, tumblr, each image is kind of enhanced by the images that surround it. I like the mass of pictures.
I'm finding editing to be very difficult, but also very fun! Like, I've got a lot of pictures that I'm not that thrilled with on flickr but feel kind of bad about deleting (especially if they've been favorited). But if I make a website I get to include the best of the best and that is very satisfying.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 8 September 2011 14:20 (twelve years ago) link

Also: do not like flash-based albums! No page-turning metaphors please! I don't want to have to click each and every time I want to see a new picture.

oh!: should've mentioned this, which a friend uses: http://ihardlyknowher.com/
you end up with a short url that, provided it's suffixed with /big, i think, gives you the kind of minimal, large-framed set of images i was talking about. i am pro- the customisation of html but it's pretty much the thing i was shooting for, it might be a good fit for you?

flickr "OH THE CRISPNESS OF FIELD IN THIS NUDE IS EXQUISITE" letches are maybe a good argument against it, also.

medium format. the smooth tonality in soth's pictures is pretty incredible, pretty sure you can't get that in 35mm.

I also notice it's a trend in portrait photography - take someone out to somewhere on the beach or in some sublime part of nature on a cloudy or overcast day, when the sky acts like a giant softbox. you get these gorgeous results that I'm never sure if they radiate from the subject or the weather.

square crop looks neat. i don't think i'm schooled enough to know better than just thinking square = medium format.

those alec soth pics are great. in terms of their 'look' i think they have a kinda good take on what things look like now - some of the bold, deep, spectral quality of eggleston's colours, or something old, but with some of the bleached out discolour of new/digital stuff, without getting too tumblr-wave or whatever that whole school's called.

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

I had notions of getting into medium format, but now that I've got the combination of the Leica, really really cheap development, and a 35mm scanner, I don't want to mess with a formula that works. It's actually very cheap for me to make pictures right now and I think I need to keep it that way for awhile.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 9 September 2011 13:54 (twelve years ago) link

what do you guys use for scanners, out of curiosity?

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 14:15 (twelve years ago) link

I have a Plustek Opticfilm which is great for the price. It is 35mm only though. No medium format, no large format, etc. I'm able to get a lot more out of my negatives by scanning myself. No blown highlights, no washed out blacks that the lab tries to make gray. I scan scan dark photographs as dark and light photographs as light, etc, and I can get away with a bit more overexposure and with using cheaper film.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 9 September 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

so dum dum f/u question: is it cheaper to just have negatives developed? or do you do it yourself? and is THAT cheaper/easier? i've never done any kind of darkroom work, but you guys have got me more interested in film stuff lately

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

for medium format and even some varieties of large format you can use an epson v500 or v700. the v700 is GREAT for medium format and really good for 35mm too. I have noticed a drop in quality and resolution changing to a v500 but the v500 is also 1/5 the price.

the v700 also has some quality control issues ime, or at least with the one I had.

(largely because my dad's got an m6 just fucking sitting there gathering dust....and an m8, ffs....figure i might be able to twist an arm or two and borrow the 6 for a little bit)

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

xp for color, it's way easier to send it off to a lab. people have used wal-mart as the cheapest way but it can be a crapshoot since sometimes they make you pay for prints. if you can find a local lab that still does color developing that's great. or you can take it to a target or CVS or something and see if they'll just do developing (it's like $1 at target sometimes.)

for b&w, home developing is definitely the way to go, but requires an investment, time, effort, etc. xp initial investment in equipment would probably be anywhere from free to $100 depending on if you got a good deal on craigslist or if you bought everything new.

scanning is probably the most onerous part of the whole exercise - even with a v700 that does 24 frames of 35mm at once, it still takes about an hour per 24 frames.

you also have to start investing in negative sleeves and binders. it's a lot of work compared to digital!

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

hoh shit, if your dad has a m6 lying around, put on the ski mask and make a visit at night...

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

well, tbh, the up-front work/expense is the biggest barrier for me, esp since i have a perfectly functional gf1/LR3. still, the slow-pace/DIY part is actually sort of appealing? esp if, at the end of the day, i can still manipulate the images digitally? the main reason i never used my canonet (that is, before it broke) was because it was such a pain/$$$ to get stuff developed and then end up with sorta shitty prints that i couldn't do anything with.

xp ha, nah, i think i can just ask him. he let me borrow the M8 to take to frikkin central africa for a month, i think he'd probably be okay with letting me borrow the other one for a little while.

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

yeah - I just outlined a way to do it cheaply. if you're only shooting a few rolls every month or so, there are mail order places that will provide you w/ developing + lab quality scans at like, maybe $10-20 per roll?

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

I have corner store lab just down the block from where I work that does $3 a roll for develop only (I think he actually has B&H do the developing, but whatever), so it's trivial for me to drop off and pick up a lot of rolls, snip them into strips of six negatives apiece and run them through the scanner. When I was dropping off for developing and scanning at a pro lab, a roll of 36 cost $16. Big price difference!
My pro lab was super nice though and I feel guilty about not going anymore. They even gave me a bottle of wine for Christmas!
And scanning is slow. I'm always trying to come up with strategies to make it faster.

I kinda like scanning though. Like I'm a little sad when I realized I just finished a roll, cuz it's fun to see what picture is coming next.

<3
i do not really have a good lab situation at the moment, i just switched from a kinda indie place that p often fucked up my photos (didn't print some, gave me gloss instead of matte &c) to a kodak branded place (that is p good). i love going to hardcore places, though. the first real, semi-industrial development place i ever went to, i was asking for prints of a roll of ilford delta 3200 & they squinted, sized me up and said, "... but you shot it at 1600, right?"

and my soul said you can't go there (schlump), Friday, 9 September 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

oh man i don't even get that :-/

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

haha guess your negatives weren't thin enough for 3200!

the true speed of delta 3200 is actually about 1000 fyi. xp

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

oh man i don't even get that :-/

yeah neither did i, my mind was just blown by it being correct - i have an om-1, which maxes out at 1600; a couple of other cameras i have won't go higher than 1000 - so i assumed they were just such old hands that they knew what kind of thing i was doing and then processed accordingly, if that was an adjustment to make.

camera-math is something i really cannot do, really; i'm fine correlating f-stop, aperture & film speed, but when you throw in pushing or compensating or whatever it feels like some sort of insane double negative ("oh so i guess i must just shoot this fast film slower, wider open, with more light"). am shooting some 100 speed b/w on 800 at the moment on received wisdom and out of a distaste for 100 speed b/w film (all greys imo).

and my soul said you can't go there (schlump), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

one thing that took me a few years to get is that there is no such thing as 'correct exposure'

they were probably asking you what speed you shot the roll at for development purposes, not for printing purposes?

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

I think I reasonably understand what it means to push or pull film now but it'd take me some time to type it out

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

they were probably asking you what speed you shot the roll at for development purposes, not for printing purposes?

oh yep, i was just getting prints
not gonna make you explain pushing!, i'm good w/it at the moment, sorta as an extension of no-such-thing-as-correct; i'm not really dispirited by things coming out different, & would only be concerned if it was going to literally bleach or denigrate the shots. it's never been that dramatic, just plays with contrast. actually have some nice photos from a roll i shot (similar kind of thing, some weird iirc agfa 100 film, shot on 800-ish), taken in glorious sunlight, that i should scan. slightly weird colour ranges or something.

and my soul said you can't go there (schlump), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

uh, just getting negatives.

and my soul said you can't go there (schlump), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, my photo math is sort of limited to the relationship between f-stop, shutterspeed, and film speed, and even then i'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants---i shoot my gf1 on aperture priority like 95% of the time because i'd rather control depth of field, and my subjects are rarely moving so fast that shutterspeed is even an issue.

a big part of wanting to shoot film is to better understand all that stuff

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I didn't really understand that stuff too much before shooting film w/ a manual camera, and even then it took the better part of a year, where each week I was probably developing a scanning 3-10 rolls

now that I've somewhat got a handle on that, I'm making my life even more complicated by trying to learn how to print in a darkroom, fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

I certainly didn't have a sense of "no such thing as correct exposure" until doing home scanning. I had lab scans that would blow out whites and hike up the contrast, and I was always left trying to figure out just how I might have over or under exposed on any particular shot, when a different scan might have actually looked just fine. It's nice to know that you can mostly guess, and err on the side of overexposure when unsure.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

I tend to rate most film at a stop or two slower than the listed speed to begin with.

have we talked about the Zone system on here before

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

the zone system is for weenies

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

haha really? i only know from what i've read on wiki, but i'm a big fan of heuristics (just learned about the sunny16 rule, etc), so any sort of simple framework is always nice

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

it's not a simple framework

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

imo it's for photographic aspies, people who enjoy the process of taking a picture much more than the picture itself

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

huh. i basically took this away from it:

-find the darkest area that you'd still like to be detailed
-meter it
-take that reading and go down two stops

-if yr shooting color, do the same except meter the brightest area you want detailed and open up two stops

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

that sounds right except I think you switched the 'go down' and the 'open up'

that's not the zone system though

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

heuristics I follow: the first one you mentioned, 'f/8 and be there'

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

also I think if you're metering for highlights you go down 4 four stops... can't remember. this is all for negative film btw

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

nah, i think i had it right: meter the darkest area that you want detail ~preserved~ in, not want you want to be the "neutral" or Zone V area. so if you go down two stops it'll be darker there than the meter wanted, but it'll still be ok detail-wise

wiki:

Visualize the darkest area of the subject in which detail is required, and place it on Zone III. The exposure for Zone III is important, because if the exposure is insufficient, the image may not have satisfactory shadow detail. If the shadow detail is not recorded at the time of exposure, nothing can be done to add it later.
Carefully meter the area visualized as Zone III and note the meter’s recommended exposure (the meter gives a Zone V exposure).
Adjust the recommended exposure so that the area is placed on Zone III rather than Zone V. To do this, use an exposure two stops less than the meter’s recommendation.

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

ok yeah my mistake! I think yer right. and close down 2-4 stops from a highlight reading

I think zone system is for weenies because zone system users go to a scene (usually an immobile one like a landscape) and spend a lot of time ~analyzing~ the light there using a spot meter, making decisions about where to place certain elements in which 'zone', etc.

if the one thing you take away from zone system is 'open up two stops from where you metered the shadow details" then 1.) you're all set and 2.) that's not the zone system anymore

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

wait now I'm confused again

meter brightest thing, then ~open~ the aperture two stops so that the neutral stuff isn't too dark

meter the darkest thing, then ~narrow~ the aperture so that the neutral stuff isn't blown out

we should prob have a separate thread for metering huh

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

no wait you're right, I just get confused when I talk about this stuff on the internet

dayo, Friday, 9 September 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

I think stuff is most useful with spot meters tho

I just messed around with my gf1 and the "standard" meter (which is basically a spot + ambient) gave similar results as spot metering and then stopping up or down

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

The Zone System is so complicated Adams had to break it up into five books, IIRC. It goes far beyond basic exposure rules into pre-visualization, exposure, developing, printing, dodging/burning/etc..

ha that's crazy, they're all great & go well together; i don't think ilx syndication is too damning. i followed the flickr links to check out the cameras involved & was surprised they were all digital - there's something super appealing about the contrast & darkness of some of the shots & i think i'd assumed they were film.

i feel weirder & weirder reading some of the photo threads here because i think i'm pretty bad on a technical level & am probably stubbornly butting my head against analogue, because ~at its apex~ it is superior, to me, when realistically i could probably be doing better in some senses with digital or whatever. i took this photo of some friends a couple of weeks ago (& a bunch that are similar), w/old expired 1600 film, & i like it fine, can handle the visible deficiencies of it not being especially 'clear', but feel pulled up short when i see the radiance/clarity of either great!, well-taken!, digital stuff, like yours - the guy in the shirt with the road in the background -- or of properly exposed film stuff elsewhere.

aw thanks man

i was basically cheating on a lot of those ugandan shots, tho, bear in mind---shooting a 28mm summicron on an m8 did a lot of the heavy lifting. aside from framing and being in the right place, the only "decision" i made was to selectively meter the highlights sometimes (w/o adjusting, tho, cuz i didn't know what i was doing). that's why shots like that one from the bus came out like they did, i think.

also i've realized (and had explained by dayo) that getting properly exposed stuff outside is waaay easier than inside, i think?

forced to change display name (gbx), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, for sure. taking photos indoors i am mainly concerned with getting something to show up, tbh, for posterity. having lots of light to play with, outside, is just a joy, & makes it easier to bring a sense of decision-making to the process, on account of like having the actual horizon as a factor in your depth-of-field decisions.

i am on ebay looking at leicas btw, this is never going to happen.

haha, yeah, i realized when going through a lot of these last night that square-cropping really was a thing i was leaning on, and for no good reason? nice for portraits, i think, but looking over some older ugandan photos i saw that i was cropping out stuff that i thought was "extraneous" but was actually kind of interesting as ephemera. (cf the cam in that portrait of my friend jonah, in the wig---friend of mine told me to crop that out and i think it makes the picture way more interesting)

hey thank you! i feel like the guys playing cards* is a little generically 'otherly' somehow, but the guys' expressions are great, so. stock is mainly just outdated film, so mainly just faded out (through economy rather than aesthetics, really); the super grainy kinda midnight cowboy stuff is a few rolls of like velvia 50, iirc, shot in mid-summer. ty anyhow.

* i actually kinda like that it's ill-exposed enough to bleach out whatever it is that's happening on the table, so you can read it just as guys socially sharing an introspective moment of blankly staring at a table

forced to change display name (gbx), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, I've been using a GF1 all through 2011. it's been awesome, but a little iffy once you're into ISO 800+ territory.

AFAIK there are plugins that will upload from lightroom/aperture/whathaveyou, but I add few enough pictures to mine that I'll usually just export a full-res JPEG and upload it manually. the tumblr 'dashboard' is actually p nice. I have barely any followers, but it's always a boost when some random person likes/reposts something I've shot.

Millsner, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

hmmmm. manually might prevent photorrhea on my part. the whole reason i set up a diff flickr was to force myself to edit more judiciously

forced to change display name (gbx), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

aside from framing and being in the right place,

don't sell yourself short! this is the hardest thing to do in all of photography. don't think any less of a picture you made because all you did was 'press the shutter' - by putting yourself in a position to take the picture you did 99% of the heavy lifting already. when I first saw the phrase 'f/8 and be there' bandied about as a photography maxim I was all "???" - but now I realize it's the be there part that's the point. I mean, I would wager that all of HCBs, or Winogrands, greatest shots were probably made using 2 or 3 exposure settings* - the technical stuff washes out once you have 'it'.

anyways lol yeah my flickr is all stuff I am trying to sell/have sold. I have a tumblr but I am getting really close to getting drunk one day and deleting it. still marinating about what a good photo website should be like. maybe start a separate thread.

I do like tumblr as a website but I feel any photo website that how do I shot serious is gonna get sucked up by the tumblr subculture of hyper-fast posting and going viral and all that. a distraction. IHKR looks really nice, I might start using it as a stopgap...

*iirc HCB liked to shoot at f/8, 1/125, with focus set at 5 meters, whenever he was outside. his printer had to deal with the rest. must be nice, not having to print!

Dayo, I have to admit I liked your flickr stream of cameras to sell! Even with the Leica, I've always liked the look of the Canon rangefinders. How are they to use?

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 22 September 2011 02:01 (twelve years ago) link

depends on how much of a tactile person you are! I am a very tactile person so I pay attention to small details. I've owned a canon 7 and P. the viewfinder is nice, about as big as a leica but not as nice to look through. the rangefinder patch is a circle but doesn't have a clearly defined boundary, so it's fuzzy and not as nice. the shutter sound is a little bit harsher and more strident than a leica but not by much. the film advance is notably rougher than a leica, and I've heard that's the case even after a CLA.

on the other hand, they are cheap and getting cheaper - $150 should get you a canon p, which is one of the greatest looking cameras. of all time. of all time!

hahah don't get them from ebay - if you aim a serious leica, there are better and more reliable deals to be had. private sellers will always offer a better deal if yer patient enough.

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Thursday, 22 September 2011 02:06 (twelve years ago) link

That's reassuring to know about the Canon. I was very close to buying one + lens and viewfinder last winter for, maybe $300-400? but my girlfriend talked me out of it saying "you really want a Leica, so just wait and get a Leica." It was good advice.
And *actually* when I picked up the Leica M2 I got it on eBay for a cool $400. It was low because the leatherette was worn and it was a little dinged up, and, I dunno, I bid well? But the seller was local so I could just pick it up in person.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 22 September 2011 02:11 (twelve years ago) link

$400 is a really great price for a m2! yeah there is a theory with equipment buying, that you might as well buy what's top of the line, so that way you can never convince yourself that it's your equipment that's the limiting factor, not you.

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Thursday, 22 September 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

My eBay standard operating procedure served me well on that one, which is: find what the *lowest* an object I'd like has ever gone for (in decent condition) and then just keep bidding again and again with that amount as my max (usually entering it 5 minutes or so before ending).
And as for not buying the Canon rangefinder, I'd already spent more than enough money on compact fixed-lens rangefinders, or Soviet stuff, or point and shoots, etc., and realized that the Canon would be more of the same. Better to wait a little longer and get the real deal.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Thursday, 22 September 2011 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

Pretty much all of my bookshelves have an old, cheap camera on them - Agfa Clicks and Clacks, a Canonet, a Rolleicord that I haven't dared test since it went flying during a panic stop five years ago. I restrict that collection to 120 and 35mm, so I could theoretically use them if I got a scanner.

manually might prevent photorrhea on my part.

Not if you really want to take pictures. Because if you really want to take pictures, you will, and lots of them. The framing and focus may be more carefully considered, but some will be slightly out of focus and unusable, just like with autofocus or point and shoot, where many of your shots are badly framed, and just as bad as if they were all fuzzy. You'll spend more time on each shot, maybe, and maybe some of your shots will be better, and maybe you'll learn more about how your lenses work than you knew before. But don't expect a dramatic drop in the number of shots you take unless you just stop caring to take pictures as much as you used to. Manually focusing and framing a shot does not take that much more effort than merely manually framing a shot.

*iirc HCB liked to shoot at f/8, 1/125, with focus set at 5 meters, whenever he was outside. his printer had to deal with the rest. must be nice, not having to print!

ha, this is fascinating dayo. i think my furtive explorations of how great photographers actually took their shots always run into just vagueness or obfuscation, like you never get hard replicable facts in the books i've read.

Didn't realize Canon Ps were that cheap. I didn't need to know that.

Out of the the window of the train home. I didn't think anything of this picture at the time, and assumed I had just snapped a big pile of uselessness. But I got all the photos home, and this one jumped at me. In a nice way.

One thing I have definitely learned: never use a 3" screen to judge the aesthetic value of the photos you have taken. It happens A LOT that I see something that I had no idea was there, once I have it on a desktop screen in front of me.

this feels so like being BUSTED, i really don't have the vocabulary to talk about photography so was erring on the side of vagueness. i mean that your aperture is generally closer to being at 16, & leaving everything fairly visible & in focus, rather than limiting the DOF. i would stride in and say 'wide open', but i just heard someone use that to suggest what i thought of as being the opposite - as in like a v narrow field in focus - so i'm all confused. this wasn't meant to turn into a photo-vocab-digression, it's just it seems like such a crucial part of what makes those pics so good & subsequently what must be kind of an ideal in taking street photos, to some degree; that everything is contextualised by some idea of the sprawl of where it's taking place.

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah, totally! I love depth of field. I normally shoot between f/4-f/11, staying around f/8-f/11 if possible. my 35mm lens atm only goes down to 2.8. also I tend to shoots subjects that are at least 10 feet away, it's hard to throw a background out of focus at 10 feet with a 35mm, even if you had a f/2 or f/1.4 aperture. well, maybe with an f/1.4 aperture.

mainly it's for convenience sake, hyperfocusing and all that, but it's also maybe about not relying on background blur for subject isolation.

but yeah I can't think of any street photographer (that I like, anyway) who uses extreme DoF and blur for good pictures

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, sure. it is funny, it took me a really long time to begin to think of 16 as an optimum, rather than 1.8/2.8, i think because super-extreme-narrow-focus was one of those first almost trashy thing that seemed magical about cameras to me, along w/shit like MOTION BLUR, & light trails, double exposures, &c&c&c. so i'm reflexively inclined to move the dial more that way. the practicality of removing the delicacy of focus while on the move is a big plus, too, i guess.

(incidentally i am just finishing a roll of 1600 film that's been in the yashica i bought a while ago, &'ve only previously shot one kinda poorly exposed roll on, & might get it printed soon; will totally bring my rangefinder experiments to the yard itt if it comes out okay, i'm intrigued)

but yeah I can't think of any street photographer (that I like, anyway) who uses extreme DoF and blur for good pictures

yeah, this is surprising to me but otm; it was looking at your pic w/the trail of kids that kinda shocked me into specifically noticing it, because the various fore- & background dressings are so essential.

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:41 (twelve years ago) link

^^^totes. i was very very guilty of narrow DOF omg bokeh shots when i first got my gf1. seems like a p common indulgence of the new photographer

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the chief advantage of a large sensor camera is the ability to selectively focus. but really, it's just another tool in the toolbox - there are some great, classic shots that lean real heavy on the thin DoF, and there are just as many that don't. it's all about how you make that tool work to craft your vision

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:53 (twelve years ago) link

protip: instead of getting that f/1.4 or f/1.2 or f/1.0 lens for that thin DoF, just move in closer. DoF decreases significantly the closer you move in to a subject.

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:54 (twelve years ago) link

(I should say, DoF decreases significantly with closer focal distance)

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:54 (twelve years ago) link

I tend to try to stick to f/4-f/8 on 35mm or APS-C - deep enough depth of field, but distant objects are sufficiently blurred to not be a distraction.

'bokeh shots' are the worst - even if your lens has 'nice' bokeh, if your eye is completely distracted by the sheer amount of OOF area it's probably a terrible composition

hey plax are you still just carrying your camera around? bc i liked all the still-lifey kinda stuff you were shooting, even if you can't take pics of yr new friends

Oh man oh man.... gf out of town for a bit and lots of negatives coming back soon, so it's gonna be many hours of scanning ahead for me. Fun!
Dayo... I like that shot of the guy eating. The kinda built physique and the striped shirt really make it I think. I mean in addition to the downcast eyes, hand placement, etc.

This has been sitting as my most recent on flickr for quite awhile (was out of town snapping away in SF for a bit, and visiting the awesome store CAMERA HEAVEN in the Tenderloin):

thanks guys! schlump almost everything is either 400 or 400 pushed to 1600 (the high contrast ones are I think).

after going through those photos I think I have a problem w/ chronic underexposure - will need to remind myself to expose a stop or two higher than I have been.

ty! i am counting this as me being 1000% correct, i was near enough. i haven't developed all of the rolls i've fucked around with in various ways, but it feels like you can be pretty flexible w/BW film & get something good back, at least if you're pushing it up. those pics testify to the virtues of exposing well imo, they're so strong, the tones are so deep.

nice to see yr pic chinavision, yr photz are still reminding me of jeff wall somehow.

One of the great things about that stag shot is how it's layered. There's no continuous foreground-to-background view. Instead, there are five or six discrete levels of depth. It's spectacular - well done!

i just shot a roll of film of a bunch of people i only get to hang out with once, this sunny fall day, then found the roll didn't spool. just want to punch myself in the face. i always suspect it's happening when it happens, too, it's devastating. dammit.

one way I check that is by winding on a stroke, then rotating the rewind crank until I feel resistance, then shooting and winding on another frame. if I see the rewind crank spin, then I know I'm good

Exceptionally high standard on this thread of late. I barely have anything to offer...

Bummer about the roll, schlump! I think I related a similar experience upthread (or in another thread maybe?). I figure everyone's probably got at least one not-properly-loaded-roll story, and also probably an opened-the-camera-without-rewinding story. The latter one happened to me once, and I just kind of stared at the film dumbly for a second before slapping the camera back shut in a panic. I've caught myself starting to open a camera once or twice before realizing what I was doing.
The joys of film!

Just searched for this one within my Flickr stream for another purpose; weird framing (it was taken through a wire mesh fence) but I do like it anyway. All that was left when our local thrift store burned to the ground in 2002 (Canon Ftb, 50/1.4 lens, Kodak Gold 200):
