Animated Creatures: ilx animation poll nomination thread (closes June 10th!)

Voting is open for Animated Creatures.

Official nomination list (filmographic data remains incomplete; if you spot a thing that was nominated in the thread and is missing here just post here and I'll rectify it)

How to vote

Rank your top 50 films from the list. List your films from your #1 to your #50 and email your ballots to creatures at jklol.net. To assist with tabulation, please:
- don't send your ballot as anything other than the body of your email or a plaintext attachment
- put each film on a separate line, with the film's ID from the list as the first thing on the line
- provide your ilx username in the email for uh verifiability or whatever

Votes will be tabulated using the unweighted Borda count method (i.e. the usual thing). I may also determine what the Condorcet winner of the poll is just to see if it's different.

How results will go

If I get less than 12 ballots, I'll just unceremoniously post the results.

If I get at least 12 ballots, I'll do a multi-day poll result rundown in the traditional fashion.

If I get at least 24 ballots, I'll do screencaps!

Please don't post your ballots in this thread, or spoil your #1 or anything. Please do stan for films that you think deserve a first or second look for people's ballots.

Anyway have at. Can't wait to see how this all comes together!

50! That's a lotta films. Can we do shorter ballots?

Yes, of course. Minimum of 20 preferably.

gonna have to do some serious thinking about this

I'm not sure if it played much outside of the UK, but The Wrong Trousers, by Nick Park's Aardman Animations, is amazing - properly funny film parodies*, a ton of background jokes, great characters, and an amazing slapstick / action sequence finale that really, is one of the best things ever.

*most of which I suspect I don't really get due to not knowing enough film noir - but it's okay, each of them is also a really funny joke!

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

A guarantee - if you watch The Wrong Trousers then say "Yeah but X is better" then I will watch the shit out of X before the poll closes.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

Oh dang, I forgot to nominate any Duchamps. Might do a fairly small ballot for this one, I'm not so invested in it...

I would have liked to have nominated Brave if I had known when this poll was closing. Plus how did yall forget the Duck Tales movie?

I'm not sure if it played much outside of the UK, but The Wrong Trousers, by Nick Park's Aardman Animations,

this is one of the best films of any kind ever, but Nick Park wrote and directed it, and does not own Aardman - he was a schoolboy when they started and didn't join until circa Sledgehammer (co-founder Peter Lord is still an active filmmaker, directed the Pirates! adaptation of this year)

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 06:35 (eleven years ago) link

also not on the list: The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie aka The Great American Chase - this is a 1979 comp of classic Chuck Jones material, voting for which may be a good way to avoid vote-splitting among WB shorts.

➂ ➌ ➂ (Pillbox), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

support people repping for specific WB (& Disney, if there are any) shorts in this thread if dodgy youtube links are available - I dunno any by name

highly recommend the 1943 'chicken little' -- it's got the most shocking ending of any disney cartoon i know.

OK here is a bunch of stuff I found on NETFLIX fyi

Fritz the Cat
Fire and Ice
The Secret of NIMH
Gumby: The Movie
Mary & Max
The Book of the Dead
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Popeye - comp. of early shorts
The Secret of Kells

All Dogs Go to Heaven
Rango

anyone wanna recommend me one or two of Bill Plympton's feature-length films to seek out? I've not seen any of them, tho I really like what shorts of his I've encountered.

➂ ➌ ➂ (Pillbox), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:09 (eleven years ago) link

I did not know that! And I'm glad to, as it means that he'll probably be active for longer than if he was a founder.

Also I can't believe I didn't know until now that the W&G stories were co-written by the author of The Claws of Axos / The Sontaran Experiment / The Hand of Fear!

ok this was only me being stupid, it's just called Gandahar.

done a quick tot up and i've already got 25 on my ballot, plan on trying to catch up on as many more as possible over the next couple of weeks.

Jesu swept (ledge), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:39 (eleven years ago) link

on Plympton features: The Tune is the only one I've seen but it's great (however also spuriously tangents off to incorporate some of his shorts)

Also I can't believe I didn't know until now that the W&G stories were co-written by the author of The Claws of Axos / The Sontaran Experiment / The Hand of Fear!

First two were Park alone. But the ears on robot Preston in A Close Shave are a tip-off about the co-author.

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

Do you have a source for that? IMDB reckons otherwise.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:55 (eleven years ago) link

spuriously tangents off to incorporate some of his shorts

I think (not 100% sure) they were always intended to be part of The Tune but Plympton released some scenes as shorts ahead of time to raise money to finish the film. It does feel a little disjointed but that's the series-of-musical-numbers nature of it I guess. I love it, btw.

Anyway The Tune and I Married A Strange Person are great, I didn't care for Hair High at all (standard new-kid-in-high-school plot moves slowly with occasional bursts of gross-out slapstick which, I know, is what you expect from a Plympton film, but it just didn't really gel for me), and I haven't seen anything else. Has anyone seen any others?

using the youtu.be links works…I really ought to have harvested links to shorts from the nomination thread (there are lots of links to the nominations in the nomination thread!) but I didn't have quite that level of commitment to copy-pasting things.

I would encourage anyone with the time to please watch the Sally Cruikshank films, Quasi at the Quackadero and Make Me Psychic. They're something like Fleischers done in the seventies, with music by R. Crumb's backing band and mostly animated (over a period of years) by Cruikshank alone. Particularly with the former, there's something richly nostalgic going on amidst all the weird cartoon geekery in the carnivalesque encounters with possible pasts and futures, huckster'd or otherwise. Make Me Psychic increases the pace does better in terms of sheer goofy cartooniness without going into hyperdrive like the remarkable but sort of opaque Face Like a Frog (1987).

Psychic: http://youtu.be/4PWPoHg2cRA

Also a reminder that you should all watch The Wrong Trousers if you have a spare 30 minutes and would like to vote for the winner.
